eBay 'Simple Delivery' (yeah, bøllocks it is!)
pete.young replied to binky_bass's topic in General Discussion
To be fair to Ebay, they have no choice in that. Once you sell more than £1740 Ebay is obliged to notify HMRC under UK digital sales legislation. You're required to pay tax on anything you earn over £1000 p/a. Might be an idea to fill in a self-assessment form if you're in this position, to stave off any unwanted interest from HMRC. -
I was using exactly the same one until my brother kindly 3D printed the 'unofficial' bespoke stand for me. The laptop one works well though, and has a handy place to hang your headphones!

I saw them in Birmingham on the Clockwork Angels tour. They were brilliant. I also saw Iron Maiden this Summer in London with their new drummer. It was live music, their new drummer lost time and dropped beats and all three guitarists were making mistakes all over the place, Bruce's voice is a little bit tired but the show was awesome.

Only slight correction is the two biggest and best bass-only stores to my knowledge are Bass Direct and The Bass Gallery in London. And that's no disrespect to BassBros 😊 ps. BassBros also sell guitars.

They never replied to an email I sent them, which could have ended in a sale. I went elsewhere.

Well, this is a bit embarrassing, but when I went to remove the Kappa's from the cabs I noticed one of them was wired backwards from the other (by me, doh), so between that and the cabs, I'm not surprised it didn't sound so great. I did use a Tech 21 Q-Strip pedal with a set 45Hz HPF, or an Alembic SF-2 Superfilter, but with the speakers being out of phase, was probably a bit moot. I may have customs cabs made to specs mentioned by Bill here, or maybe go another speaker/cab route entirely. I tend to play hollow body basses like the Epiphone Jack Casady, Gibson EB-2, and Guild Starfire, fairly aggressively (and loudly) and go for the ' big-and-heavy-but-transparent' 60s/70s classic rock sound - that's why I like the JBL K140s, but hauling 4 of them (150w rms each for 600w rms total) gets a bit tiring and takes up a lot of space, so I'm looking at more modern lightweight high-powered, but still having something of an 'old school' sound, alternatives. There's an Accugroove 'El Whappo' 15/12/6 cab for sale near me that caught my attention. I hear they handle lows very well and are plenty loud. Bergantino also sounds good but are way pricey brand new. I tried an Orange OBC115 and was totally underwhelmed with it. People have mentioned the 3015 is a good replacement for the stock speaker in those cabs, but they ain't cheap, either.

Indeed Will did use to work at Bass Direct. And the comment about replying to mails is spot on.

Another thing I have had with eBay recently, having sold quite a bit of gear these past few months with a rig rebuild, is they now want my National Insurance details as I've hit their threshold. Apparently if you sell more than £1,700 annually they will now ask for this -
That makes sense, thanks for the replies

Takamine TB10 or DB10? What’s the difference?

Neck Problem - Skunk Stripe Popping Out Slightly
Joe Nation replied to RnRDave's topic in Repairs and Technical
If you glue it yourself, get a little rubber suction cup (like those ones to stick a stuffed Garfield to your car window) and go "schluck schluck schluck" up and down the glue line - this helps to suck the glue deeper in. Get plenty of glue in there, wipe off any excess then wrap an old bike inner tube around the neck as tight as you can get it to act as a clamp (use a zip-tie or a big spring clamp to hold the loose end). -
Takamine TB10 or DB10? What’s the difference?
Beedster replied to Rob MacKillop's topic in Bass Guitars
I read it as inferring that an important element of it’s DB-like tone is the high action, that if you lower the action it will sound increasingly like a fretless electric bass, albeit a very large and slightly unergonomic one. I had one for a year or so, yes it can do DB, but as is so often said, if you want a true DB sound, it’s so much easier to do it on a DB. The Takamine is beautifully designed and beautifully engineered but as an instrument it is neither one thing or the other. If I had the funds spare I still wouldn’t buy another -
Which venue were you doing? We played The Berliner this year. We also brought our own passive DIs.

Takamine TB10 or DB10? What’s the difference?
Rob MacKillop replied to Rob MacKillop's topic in Bass Guitars
It does, I agree. My thinking was that the DB and TB both need thick double bass strings and high tension in order to I get the sound they do. By getting a tech to make it more playable for me - I have a fairly light touch - it would change the nature of the instrument for the worse. I decided the basses were perfect as they were, and the problem was me. I looked elsewhere, and bought the Godin A5 Ultra. We shall see how I get with that when it arrives Wednesday next week. -
That's so odd, almost looks as if the router template got broken and they bodged it with some filler.

I like these too. That's sent me off down a rabbit hole for a bit. -
Hi all, A recent hip replacement has gifted me something special: clarity and a frightening amount of spare time to play with my gear and even more hours to realise I don't need most of it. So, here’s your chance to snag a pedal that’s in excellent condition: gently neglected, thoroughly appreciated, and now ready for a new home! Here is the link to the Blackhole on the Eventide Website. Go ahead, fall down the rabbit hole of overly poetic knob explanations. (‘reverb pedal as big and mysterious as the cosmos.’ What does that mean?)” Alternatively, here's the sales pitch bit Eventide Blackhole – Deep Space Reverb for Bassists Take your bass tone into uncharted territory with the Eventide Blackhole. This pedal delivers massive, ambient reverb from Eventide’s legendary algorithm—perfect for adding atmosphere without muddying your low end. Tailored Control: Dial in your sound with hands-on knobs or go deeper via MIDI and software. Flexible Setup: Works in mono or stereo, with input options for bass guitar or line-level rigs. Studio-Grade Sound: From subtle space to infinite decay, Blackhole keeps your low frequencies tight and clear. Ideal for ambient, experimental, or cinematic bass tones—Blackhole lets your sound breathe and expand. Specification Five presets loaded at your feet with dozens more available with Eventide Device Manager (EDM) software Rear panel Guitar/Line Level switch for selecting use with guitar, synths, FX loop or DAW interface Map any combination of parameters to an Expression Pedal. Use a single Aux switch to Tap Tempo or a triple Aux switch for easy preset changing (up/down/load). MIDI capability over TRS (use with a MIDI to TRS cable or converter box) or USB Multiple Bypass options: Buffered, Relay, DSP+FX or Kill dry Eventide Device Manager PC or Mac application for software updates, system settings and creating/saving presets Fine-tune your tone with Lo, Hi and Q (resonance) controls. Use the tone controls to add airiness or clear up the low-end. Map the EQ controls to an expression pedal to add movement to the reverb tail. Box includes pedal, quick reference guide and universal power supply Recorded delivery within the UK is included in the price. If you’d prefer an alternative postage option, feel free to get in touch to discuss. EU shipping, however, involves a soul-crushing bureaucracy designed by someone who clearly hates bass players. So… no shipping to the EU I'm afraid. I'm happy to answer any questions, though be warned - I’ve spent more time looking at these pedals than actually using them; they’ve basically lived a sparse life under soft lighting. I'm not looking for any trades at the moment. Regards, Neil.

Probably best not then, just remember them then - I haven't been since 87, which is why I didn't go to the last tour.

I might be wrong but I thought Will at Bassbris had previously worked for bass direct. It’s a convenient mid-point in the country, I’ve stopped by on the way to elsewhere before.

Yesterday I got the neck pocket cut and made a pickup router template. Started off hogging out with a 35mm forstner then attacked it with a chisel, because thanks to stupid Amazon my new router bits haven't arrived yet. But then I looked in the box for my new router and found a 6mm straight cut bit - perfect! Pics to follow when I can find an alternative to imgur, but there's nothing to really see yet. I also put the tuners on the headstock - well, four of them. One of them didn't have a retaining nut and washer, but Thomann were really quick to reply to my query and are sending out a new one FOC, and they're letting me keep the wrong'un just in case. Took me a few minutes of minor freaking-out to realise that the nut threads of the left- and right-sided tuners are different - is that normal or just Sadowsky? Or maybe they were just a different batch...?

I'm not sure having a whole rail live would be good for two reasons: i. safety, ii. picking up interference. (Those Seymour Duncan surrounds are interesting to know about.) -
