Sambrook started following Epiphone Jack Casady Fretless and Epiphone Allen Woody

I've had great fun and satisfaction out of this instrument. It is much modified, as you'll see, and it took me a couple of years to get it to just where I wanted it. I've really enjoyed having it, but have moved on in my mind, so happy to pass it to someone else. Specs: 30" scale Semi hollow 38mm nut width Mahogany body and neck Maple top Bound fingerboard, not sure what wood (likely rosewood), 20 frets. Modifications: (loads!) Tuners - Wilkinson gold Y tuners Neck - I don't like shiny, so I took the neck back to bare wood, then danish oiled it. It feels fantastic, very tactile. I'm not good at fine finishing, so the points where I left off sanding are obvious (see pictures) Body - same as above, don't like shiny. Back and sides have just had the shine taken off, but I went to town on the top - took all the finish off, then danish oil. It's a matte finish that allows the wood pattern to present well. Again, see pics for a couple of bits where I went too hard... Tailpiece - I wanted to use a long scale set of TI flats, so fitted the tailpiece. This has worked very well, with a couple of unexpected benefits - the usual 3 point bridge 'problems' have been bypassed. Also there is a pleasing natural saturation to the tone. It's very much a blues bass. Pickups - as you can see, I've replaced the 2 mini humbuckers with 3 matching AliExpress specials. I really like the Thundertron vibes, and they sound excellent. Controls - wired the pickups to master vol/tone and a 5 way selector. I don't like positions 2 and 4, but each pickup on it's own sounds great - real plummy warmth from the neck, P vibes from the middle, and just a tighter P sound from the bridge. So there we are. I think it looks splendid, you might disagree. I believe the current examples have 42mm necks, so this one might appeal to those who prefer a jazz neck... Very happy to answer questions, or take any good natured abuse...

Imagine getting frustrated and worked up about kids starving to death and swearing on TV at 7pm, yeah, what an insensitive, scruffy oaf. No class at all.

So I had a rummage in the parts collection and found enough stuff to do a proof of concept at least - some tuners, a BBOT, pickups (the stock one from a Squier Jag H, and a rando J pickup). Found the Hipshot string retainer I had pilfered off of it. Offered it up and it seemed to fit. Even the tuner bushings gripped the holes - needed persuasion to sit flush which amazed me! But there's a more existential threat to the whole thing - the neck's in a bit of a back bow after years in the shed with no strings on and the truss rod not loosened - oops! And it's not simply a case of replacing the neck, because the bugger I bought the original body and neck from back in 2007 had glued the neck in! So I decided to just get the tuners and bridge installed, then string it up and hope that prolonged string tension with the truss rod backed off completely will pull it into a forward bow once more. So that's what I did (and don't talk to me about the missing screws - I snapped three drill bits during all this and two of them are stuck in the bass, FFS! Anyway, that's a problem for another day. I strung it up and at first, horrible fret buzz on all strings from frets 1-4, then comes good from 5 onwards. Sad sauce. BUT It appears to be recovering - it seemed to be a little better as the evening progressed last night, and it's better still this morning when I checked it before heading to work. So that's it had about 12 hours of unopposed string tension. Hopefully it will have improved further when I get home from work this evening. I don't wanna jinx it, but it appears that the bass wants to live....

I'm a big fan of Rob's work; he lives just down the road from me and it's a treat to see his creations coming together. Did you commission this one?
-
Bought this just after they came out. It's a fantastic bass in every respect, but I just cannot bond with it. I can't explain it... 2 mods: changed the strings for La Bella Super Polished rounds; moved the strap button to the top horn. I did this properly, injected resin whilst hung upside down. That didn't work, so once the blood had left my head, I tried upending the bass. That was much easier..., and now the bass hangs properly from a strap. So... a tremendous instrument, with real weight and authority in the tone. As new condition (one rehearsal, otherwise hasn't left the house). Comes with a rather flimsy gigbag. I could post, but would MUCH prefer collection/meet up. I'm happy to travel halfway, depending...

I've only ever tried La Bella Deep Talking flats tbh, found them to be well balanced.

Hi Gang! Hope everyones good. Putting my Ashdown rig on sale - this is from December 2024 so 6 months old basically and can prove it. Working perfectly and taken out to rehearsal just 3 times, but going digital with the band (Anagram + IEMs) so no use for this sadly. The head comes with cover, mint. Cabs with minimum scratches - enough to feel them with a nail but not cut thru the tolex - I can still remember the trip where this happen and facepalmed myself. Cabs are about 14kg each or so, can carry the whole rig two handed. Tweeters on OFF/MID/Hi on both cabs. Would prefer selling as a rig. If separate: RM 500 EVO III head £400 w/ cover ABM 2x10 EVO IV Pro Line (not the compact) £400 ABM 1x15 EVO IV Pro Line £350 Take the whole rig for £1k and I'll add the foodswitch and cables too. NOTE: Decoloration is only because of having wiped them with a wet cloth to clean the scratches for more accurate picture - they are black all over and even of course.

Should I get this bass ? Stored for 20 years
Beer of the Bass replied to feech's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I can't see any obvious structural red flags (neck repairs, neck/bridge geometry, cracks, sunken top etc), and even the bridge looks like it's probably OK. It looks like a solid top, I'd agree that the back is probably laminated. It's a non-ebony fingerboard, which you might be happy with for some styles of playing, but having mine replaced was a big improvement. It's interesting, that style of tuners often indicates an older bass, but it's clearly dated and the sprayed lacquer finish is very much a mid-later 20th century factory bass feature too. I guess Hungary must have stuck with the hatpeg tuners for longer than Germany did. I'd absolutely buy it for £275, but you could very easily throw a few hundred more at it to get it well set up with good strings. Of course, if you're feeling handy/brave and keep an eye out for decent used strings you could have it up and running for less. -

In 2007, I put together a bass, a fancy bitsa mostly - I bought the body and neck off ebay (not your typical F style bits - a body with a fancy top which might have been home made and a F like neck but with a somewhat different headstock shape), but did some modifications myself (through body stringing, an extra hole for a mini switch) and refinished it myself in shellac (Ronseal's finest "French polish") and was quite pleased with the result. It predates my involvement here, so it was never documented, but it looked like this: But being a daftie at the time (heh, what's changed?) - it eventually got sidelined, then raided for parts, and eventually abandonded in the shed, where it sat, unloved for many, many years. The only thing positive you could say is that it was out of the rain and wind. Apart from that, it was in a damp, unheated shed for at least 7 years. A conversation I got involved in about "why don't (electric) instrument makers use French polish as a finish?" reminded me of this beast. For shame. What a waste. I retrieved it from the shed and took it in the house... Yeah, a bit manky. I have no idea what that discoloration of the wood next to metal parts is, it doesn't wipe off, it's in the finish or the wood. Oh well, if it doesn't wipe off, it can't harm me, or something. Quite a handsome top on it, and no veneer either, nice thick top... Eww, and that was just the front upper bout. But it was clean. Needs a polish, but there's no point in doing that unless the thing works...

TKenrick started following Finale carbon fibre bow - how much?

Looking to sell my Finale carbon fibre bow and I'm unsure of what a reasonable price might be, can anyone give any advice? (I know this should go in the 'Wotzit Werth?' subforum, but I didn't think many people look in there!) I've had it for 10+ years and it's seen a lot of practice and the occasional gig; there's a small chip on the top of the bow near the frog, and it would benefit from a rehair. Pretty sure I bought it from here, where they're listed at $400 + $75 shipping: https://www.stringemporium.com/finale-bass-bows.htm

Her's a rough idea of costs (from my rusty memory so not exact). Estimates include delivery per item. HB PB-50 - £105 Neck - £70 Covers - £70 Inserts and Bolts - £25 So I reckon I am into this for £270 (ish). I already had the Makita, tools, rubber mallet, files, sandpaper, pack of plasters, eye drops, paracetamol etc.... I know I wouldn't get my money back on it, but that is not the point. I suppose I could sell the original HB neck but I'm not that bothered to be honest, it can sit on the shelf as an ornament! -

I am reliably informed that the bass player on the Edu Lobo track is actually Nico Assumpção not Bruno Aguilar. Will amend the website later.

How would you play the reversed fretless part ? Using a pedal?
-
It occured to me after looking at the spec of these basses again, considering the vintage-accurate spec of the pickup, will these basses be prone to the much-debated weak-sounding G string exhibited by some Stingrays of yesteryear? It's certainly something to consider.

Thank you sir, that's very kind of you 😊

Very Belated Harley Benton PB-50 Build Diary

Ok, so last bit....the pickup cover. Getting a bridge cover had been pretty easy online. There appeared to be lots of sellers that had them. Pickup covers were not so easy - only options I could find were shipping from abroad and adding about £25 on to the bill for delivery. Eventually, I found someone on eBay selling one they had bought but not used for about the same money as I paid for the bridge one (£35). I added this using the same inserts and knurled bolts technique as I did the bridge cover. My original idea being that if I was playing it and the covers were getting in the way I could get them off quick without tools. As mentioned in the earlier post, I did have to add a foam spacer under the feet as the 4mm bolts tightened all the way into their inserts but it still rattled slightly. All was solved after that. That left the finished guitar! I love the look of it and use it as my noodling bass at home. I like the fact it is exercising my brain and muscle memory into being able to flip more easily between 4 strings and my gigging 5s, and I have even taken it to a couple of gigs to try out on the odd song. -
Lovely tune, and superb fretless tone. ❤️
