Just put your fingers right behind the fret rather than on it, and practice using as little pressure as possible with your right** hand to press the string - a light touch when playing will tire your hand less. Sadowsky preamp whether onboard or pedal format. Sold pedal and have the onboard on my Jazz Bass. Zero regrets especially when playing live. Agree with all the flatwound comments posted so far,I just don't understand them in comparison to rounds. -
What about a chat on the practical use of compression for the gigging bass player? Some compression chats can get overly technical and alienate some folk.

I havn't come across these, and not likely to with my band who rarely do functions and certainly not the posh ones. Ihad to look it up. There only seems to be one company selling them in the UK and for anyone not familiar it's a 'ceiling of sound' Lots of panels od small speakers forming a suspended ceiling directly above the dance floor. DSP is used partly for compression/limiting I suspect and also to do some phase control deliberately creating power alleys so the bass drops off rapidly as you move from under the speaker array. Reading between the lines there is probably some eq boosting the bass. To give you some idea there's a second hand system being sold for £17,000 with 64 panels totalling 576 tiny speakers. I'm imagining that with all the DSP it deliberately creates the full disco experience with all the thumping bass that implies. Maybe @EBS_freak or one of the other sound guys may have come across the system so I stand to be corrected. Where was your band positioned? I'm guessing outside of the array and that you weren't allowed to use backline or floor monitors or that if you were levels were severely limited? Do you use lectronic drums? The system wouldn't work to keep the noise down if the band were just outside the Zone Array creating 100db sound levels. The only solution for you would be for you all to use in-ears in which case you could have the sound you wanted, I've played the opening number of the set with in-ears only to find out the PA is still muted :)

I’m not sure you can get a “master thread” for this kinda thing - mostly it’s playing style and bass, and then you’re going to have a combo of amp cab eq and compression - the exact setup could go from anything from “just use a SVT type sound” to whole forums of passionate people dissecting macca’s bass tone! How you get that is going to utterly dependent on the effects unit you use and what works for an individual band? Scott’s bass lessons have done some videos with Ian Martin Allison where try try and match a sound in 2 min using a hx stomp - my take out from it is playing style makes the most difference…

Out of curiosity, looking at where @lvrossem is placing his fingers, where is the "correct" place to put them? I have always played using the middle of the gap between the fretwire, so over the dot. It works for me and has done for the last 35 years () so I'm not changing now.

Well, G is for 1 billion, so it'd be billions of times worse. 1024 would be kB, which wouldn't then be GB. Unless you believe in the multiverse, in which case they already exist in all permutations, every second of every day, and thus far exceeds even a TB and even a personal best (PB). Incidentally, just as "g" is excluded as a prefix because it is the symbol for grammes, "K" isn't allowed because it is the symbol for the Kelvin temperature range. Thus kilogrammes are denoted by kg. OK?
