  1. Past hour
  2. Thank you, I really appreciate that comment. It's always nice to be complemented on my photography. Mark
  3. I could be wrong, according to Lady Maude it has happened before, but wouldn't simply resting your hand (or a finger) on the snare skin stop it resonating, in much the same way as resting your hand on your strings mutes them? I assume it's the skin vibrating against the snare, or is it the actual snare that sets up the resonance? Even if it was the snare, damping the skin with a digit would surely stop it being amplified. Too simple?
  4. Hmm, that sounds interesting and long overdue considering the number of basses that use the Bart soapbar sized pickups. Looking forward to hearing them but in the meantime I'm going to try something else to see if it works.
  5. £59 at Andertons. I got quite excited when I saw it at £113 on eBay, but decided to check further. Tough not to take a punt at that price. https://www.andertons.co.uk/aston-element-cardioid-microphone/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=surfaces&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20740064305&gclid=CjwKCAjwiezABhBZEiwAEbTPGA5ZdGR_IB7_lA-I3f84O9ALZEjD1oIgz7EJODuJE2A9j_L4pZaVoBoCs2wQAvD_BwE
  6. Interesting. Any links or pics? Thanks
  7. It’s another Yamaha…pretend it’s a bass, you’ll be fine…
  8. This is good to know. Whenever I buy a bass (probably more often than I should) I factor a good few hundred quid into the price to ensure I get the set up, strings and feel I want.
  9. Can't think of a better way to start! Basement? Bass Meant! Get a nice fitting screw driver for the machine head screws, and a wipe of candle wax or bar of soap on the threads when refitting. Run a couple of practice cuts outside the area, as different wood will cut different, don't force it, let the tool do the work. Minimal sanding with one of those i think. Steady as she goes...
  10. Back in the old country, I quite often would take a train to Dublin for picking stuff up (4-4.5hrs each way from Tralee). While not specifically FOR a bass, but I went back home to Ireland last year for family reasons and while I was there, I came across a Fender 60th Anniversary Roadworn Jazz on a couple of the sites I used to use when I lived there. Seeing as it was my 40th birthday while I was there, I thought I'd treat myself. Borrowed the old man's car and did a 3hr drive each way. Got it home, un-bolted the neck, tied up the strings, bubble wrapped the body and popped it in my suitcase. Wrapped the neck and left it in the hard case. Checked in bags. No issues when I landed back in New Zealand Picked up another Jazz in March for for my 41st lol! That was an 8 hour round trip (with a stop for lunch). Heading up the road again this Saturday to pick up what will most likely be the last bass I ever buy (genuinely!). About 240KMs each way. First thing I've bought new from a shop in about 10 odd years. I am a little bit excited...
  11. I'm fully satisfied with our Superlux HI10 mic (£30 or so from Thomann...), used as part of our drum mic set-up (for hi-hat, mostly...), but also for picking out detail from acoustic guitars. There are doubtless better ones for top-end studios or rich purists, but we find them to be excellent, despite their low cost. Worth a look..? Superlux HI10, Thomann...
  12. Another vote for Brian Pilanz. Order a pickguard from him and leave a message on the order.
  13. Yep double bass necks are super short ... so unless you have a cutaway double bass ... it's thumb-over up the dusty end! Yep I was a bit amazed at the price of a nice ebony nut too!
  14. A new archival Who album to be released this year! https://shop.thewho.com/products/live-at-the-oval-1971-cd 1971 would be Thunderbirds and Hiwatts from John?
  15. 🤮
  16. I pulled this as the new price has dropped below £500 now. However, on reflection I think £600 for the amp in mint condition, plus the bluetooth adapter, footswitch and carry bag is still a good deal, so it's back up again.
  17. I had one of these with my Peavey MIDIbass. I should not have sold that.
  18. I can't get over how short the neck is, relative to the size of the body and the headstock (peg box?). I see, from the photo of the intact bass, that the fingerboard is where the length is. I was also amazed at the price of the nut - just £8!
  19. I’ve got an Aston Element which is a ‘hybrid’ (whatever that means) but it covers a multitude of situations for a bargain price.
  20. Just learnt the FM version of Heard It Through The Grapevine, our band played it live for the first time Saturday night.
  21. As circumstantial evidence, please see exhibit A m'lud:
  22. No, that's a fairy tale to discredit people who have other fairy tales This is not to say The Church / Organised Religion hasn't attempted or does have a control on music / art
  23. Cheap at half the price - I accurately doubt I’d manage that if I paid 50 times more for them.
  24. I'm enjoying a bit of Bossk. British Post metal band. This track in particular has just blown my mind. It goes so many places from a solo trumpet to huge wall of guitar noise and everything in between.
  25. I've got a nice pair of ribbons......
