My sound has changed over the years, I used to like the trebly JJ Burnel type of sound but have realised that's not what gives the band umph, now I have as much more low mids as I can get without boom kicking in and not much above 5K Hz. Sort of occupies the right frequency area We played a festival in the summer with a full PA and sound man and I realised the bands with an overly loud bass drum were the ones where the bass disappeared into the mix because they didn't have enough low mids, and for whatever reason the sound man couldn't compensate

I'm not sure about that. Many years ago we had a slot at the Reading Festival that was a real poison chalice. We were on between Status Quo and The Faces. Quo fans didn't want them to stop and Faces fans didn't want to waste time with us, so we were being booed by everyone in the festival! A Party 7 sailed out of the darkness, bounced off the piano and, fortunately, over our heads. At least in a small venue you can see who the enemy is!

Thanks @Phil Starr and @Dan Dare for your input. I must confess I am not convinced by the stick systems - I’ve only really had experience of the low end ranges and to my ears they do not sound good nor look good (I know, Luddite etc). I’ve been tempted by the RCF NLX24’s before, in my pursuit of a single box solution, but I could certainly see using a pair of these with either one or two 905’s working for us. My plan was indeed to retain the XR18, I’ve had mine almost ten years and I am very comfortable with the UI and workflow, despite being tempted by the x32 rack for no other reason than I am a self-confessed gear slut. As you say, the EV’s and Peavey’s owe me nothing but would still probably return some money to the pot.

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
BassApprentice replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
Just spotted this after looking at Alnus basses from another thread. A replacement Mustang neck for under £200 - think that could be of use to any future short scale projects people may have in mind! https://reverb.com/uk/item/83942186-luthier-made-mustang-bass-neck -

So I am thinking that as I enjoy my 4004/5 so much it would be nice to have a 5 string 4003. Obviously they don't make one of those, but there are people who do. So I have contacted the most prominant one and asked him about it. He can do it, they aren't particulary cheap, so they would be about the price of a cheap used real one. Has anyone had one built and what were they like? I thought I could just get a used one (and originally after brexit, thomman were selling the actual 5 string 4003s/5s for that price, but not for long) but the 4003s/5s weren't that cheap, and there arent any 4003 non Ss in 5. Anyone gone this route? Yes, I know that 'tributes' is doing a bit of heavy lifting there!

Whilst they might be yet another clone - he does make replacement Jazz/P/Mustang necks for under £200. That's not bad all things considered.

Will any of this filter down to v3?

Paul S started following Sterling Bongo...worth the wait?

Sterling Bongo? Ernie Bongo's brother? Last I heard he was doing a 5er in Wandsworth for nicking toilet seats. Hang on, wrong thread.🤨

Absolutely. The worst-sounding venue I ever played in was an art deco style ballroom, which was shaped like half a cylinder (think Nissen hut). Hard plaster walls/ceiling, no absorbent materials or curtains and a hollow stage structure. The resonances and echoes were appalling and no amount of eq or tweaks helped. Despite our using high quality gear, the sound was dreadful.

The first warning sign is if the landlord/bar staff tell you when you're loading in 'It's quiet tonight, it must be because (select the excuse of your choice here ) it's just before payday/it was packed for the footy last night/everyone's on holiday/etc', at that point you brace for single-figure crowds. The real kicker is when you empty the place...or the place empties while you're on. You can tell yourself there's lots of reasons, but it still stings. I always cyber-stalk the venue beforehand, and if 90% of their social posts are about the food or the footy, it's gonna be an uphill struggle...one such place was where we played two weeks ago to the singer's girlfriend and one punter (the other dozen or so punters were down the other end of the pub in the pool room), I went and sat with the punter in the second half (the joys of wireless), introduced him to the singer's girlfriend and we asked him if he had any requests (not something we normally tolerate, but we felt obliged because he sat there all night and seemed to be enjoying himself). Couple of weeks before that an even more annoying crowd, 90% of whom who buggered off after the food service had finished, there was one table with the landlord/lady and half a dozen of their friends half way down the long room. We finished most songs to silence, not a clap, and then right at the end when they were all pisht and we said goodnight they were shouting for more encores (and I mean we did three and they wouldn't shut up). I asked them 'Where was all this noise half an hour ago? It was like a morgue in here.' We may not be invited back, but it's definitely no loss.
