An update for anyone still following this, or for anyone who might have this same issue in the future... Lots of suggestions have been made in this thread, I decided to start with the easiest one to see if this worked: Bought one of these Lehle DC filters, but it doesn't solve the problem. Next up, I'm going to try this:

Oh, that's a shame, I was fully planning on auditioning some German bows from them whenever I was feeling flush enough. I might try a speculative bid or two on the auction, you never know, especially with the German bows where demand might be lower...

Thanks for all the recommendations, and comments pro or contra. Much appreciated. I’m not sure whether to go fretted or fretless, so I just acquired one of each in the lower end of the price scale to help me fight it out: a Danelectro Dead On 58 Longhorn and the Epiphone Jack Cassidy Fretless. I used to have the Longhorn a decade or so ago, and the Ibanez SHR 4-string fretless, but have been away from the bass for a while. I’ll give them six months or so, then make the decision on a single higher-quality instrument. My style: And

I met the family when I was last there and they’re a wonderful bunch. I think the closure was forced to some degree by the state of the building (but I can speak with any authority on that).

Paul Chambers - "Freddie the Freeloader" by Miles Davis it's in bars 11 and 12 of his walking line , I think it's because it wasn't the chord I was expecting I should write it out Anthony Jackson on Donald Fagan "Ruby Baby" there's a sharp #11 in his line (maybe like Freddie it's a dominant lydian chord)

In fairness, most pedals would look crap/unreadable under strong enough direct lighting. Here’s my high-powered torch pointing at a few. One shown not shining directly. Not sure what I am missing here.

There is a happy end to this story....The guitar arrived at the buyers home yesterday after being missing for 8 days! No idea what happened. The tracking stopped last Friday when it was marked as not arrived. The buyer raised a case with E bay and there was some tracking updates but I think they DHL,were looking in to it! Fair play to them them found it in Livingston a week after it was lifted from me! Oh and I must say sorry to the two guys in the white van that uplifted it from me! (They did look shady)

Use a hairdryer to get all those stickers off - softens the glue so they should peel off without leaving too much mess or residue. -

Funnily enough, despite my best efforts, I'm in the opposite camp. I tried out loads (and sent a lot of money on one), and even though some of them have a decent enough tone, I've never found one that has a response that works for me live. I ended up selling my expensive Class D amp and getting a Handbox hybrid amp, which is an easy one-hand carry but sounds great. As far as the OP goes, I'll see your Trace Elliot and raise you an old SWR amp. For me, SWR coming onto the market was the big step forward for bass amplification. You can pick up secondhand SM-900 heads for a song these days and they are serious amps (the cabs were superb as well).
