HeadlessBassist started following Trace Elliott T-Bass
-
The original T-Basses are still sought after by some. It's one of those cases of if you know, you know. They were built by Status-Graphite and designed by Rob Green, so the quality is always bang on, as every bass originally went through the hands of one man. As for some sounding better than others, like all Status basses (and most others), they're sensitive to having clean strings and a good setup. If you find one that seems to be low on output, there's a "trim pot" on the preamp under the rear cover which should be turned to about half way, or just a little higher, but not turned up to the point of distorting the sound. Pickup height should be around 3-4mm at the bridge and 6-7mm at the neck. A very nice T-Bass 5-string I checked out earlier this year for an Irish BC Member fetched well over £1500. Relative scarcity keeps values pretty high.

I shouldn't have sold mine...

You could use a passive volume control in the effects loop. This would allow you to find tune the output volume. https://brightonion.co.uk/products/micro-volume-control

At that posh price, they'll surely sell very quickly... 🤦🏻 -
Did my recording session and the Yamaha was fine but we needed to beef up the output a bit so we stuck some foam near the bridge. Always works!

FaitalPRO 12PR320 12" X 2
JPJ posted a topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
I have a pair of new old stock FaitalPRO 12PR320 12" drivers sitting here doing nowt. This is the driver used in the Basschat 1x12” cab design (Mk1 I believe). I was going to build a 2x12 cab using these but then a lovely Vanderkley 2x12 came up local to me so the project has been shelved. I also have a complete set of good quality plywood panels to construct the 2x12 available to go with them but due to the weight, the plywood will be collection only. So £250 collected, or buyer to pay postage on the drivers. Plywood available as a package deal with the drivers for an additional £50 but collection only.-

Belka started following bass(es) for sessions?
-
I think this is absolutely right, but these days, amongst younger players 'session player' has come to mean any freelancer who plays with more than one band, and is probably just as much (or even more) about live playing than actual recording. The funny thing is, in the past, the great session players all started playing live constantly and then fell into session work - it was probably well-paid and convenient. The best players also still kept doing lots of touring, Anthony Jackson, Chuck Rainey, Pino, etc. These days you get people who actively want to be recording players primarily and are not as interested in live work. Without that foundation of playing with others constantly in different styles/genres they will probably never develop their full potential however. Also, and with the risk of sounding like an old fart, these days the likes of Sean Hurley, great player though he is, have reinforced the idea that being a good sideman/session player is all about a P bass, short scales with flats, dozens of different DI boxes which all just sound like you're rolling off a passive tone control, 'taste', and vintage vibes. While I'm sure that these are essential things you need in the toolbox to have a career these days, it produces players who sound the same. You don't see a lot of risk taking/individuality any more.

I noticed someone selling a whole load saying the Anagram meant they were just downsizing everything (although they had specific stuff about travel in there) - I wonder how things have changed since the days of e.g. the bass pod xT (I still have one of those... I should put that up for sale, really) - have recent multifx releases seen more people sell off their pedal collections? I built a truly huge pedalboard a few years ago for a synth / electronic project which didn't happen, and downsized / rebuilt this year. It's definitely revitalised my appetite for effects units - I've built PCs in the past, and it feels a little like that, with a pleasant degree of self-build. I solder my own cables, etc, and sourcing parts is good fun. That said, it's an expensive hobby: the filter board I'm building has definitely hit £500 in new spend on new filter pedals, etc, and I've been sourcing secondhand a fair amount. That only hit me yesterday: I mean, that's nearly half an anagram. -

Oosh, that’s a little bit nice! What are the pickups in that? -
I've got a couple of 'Top Twenty' guitars and a 'Audition' amp that must all be worth a fortune now! 😁

Having been a short scale ‘fan’ from afar without having played many, I recently made the leap after experiencing an unhealthy obsession with upright bass. Just to be clear I wanted to obtain as close a tone to an upright to my ears without having to resort to buying one, which would have proved to be highly impractical. The bass I chose was a Duesenberg Alliance Dave Landreth Model, which I liked both aesthetically and tonally after I swapped out the stock round wound strings for some Pyramid flats. In the lower registers it sounds close to spot on for my reference at least, although it becomes a little less woody on the G string, something which can be tamed by using the tone control. To date I am really enjoying the experience of owning and playing this instrument, everything about it screams quality, it’s built exceptionally well, sounds and looks stunning (even the case is a thing of beauty), it’s also light and very comfy to get around on. They are not exactly commonplace, but that said they are played by some well known musicians, Dave Landreth, Curt Smith, Rob Mullarkey, Dave Bronze and Chris Chaney for example. -

Oh hell yes! Until the realisation hit me it was interesting to track the curve. At one point, about 10 years ago, I sold up entirely. Bass and all. At that point I had a collection of about 50 in my possession at once. Then, some years later, I slowly rebuilt a collection. It was eye opening to see what I’d owned at what time… and painful to know that I’ll never be able to afford the five Moogerfoogers and MP-201 again at current prices -

Probably better sound quality though…. And you can always tape over it if you get bored of the album you bought. -
Just pickup a used Little Bastard 550 1. Gig and 1 rehearsal and initial impression are good. It’s a punchy little bastard indeed. Having overcome the weird reversed EQ knobs Mid Bass Treble the circuit is awesome very interactive so not plug in and go but a bit of fiddling pays off, at last ibe nailed that Bruce Foxton grindy thump

I’m in a similar space to this, although I’m not amp-less. “My sound” is controlled by my pedalboard - EQ -> compressor -> BassRig SV. Front of house gets the sound of an SVT rig which has been tweaked to be genre appropriate and has already had a band pass to remove most of the junk. The rest of the EQ and compression is pretty light. I’ve done my best to make it easy for the engineer if it sounds bad out front it’s not my fault. 😁 Also - they’ll have a job making an SVT into an 810 sound like something different! The BassRig jack out feeds the amp which can be EQ’d for the stage without comprising the FOH signal.
