Used to use Pirate in Nottingham without major problems, had to ring once or twice for dodgy access codes. Got used to expecting the Ashdown combo to have really weird settings. Used Cardiff a few times... a bit scruffy and it closed after a few months. Other studios are a mixed bag. Not much difference in price, but the better ones tend to be booked up well in advance. I usually use my own gear and we just use the pa and drumkit less breakables.

Or even a bit less for somewhere decent!

I used to rehearse with a band in one of Pirate's locations in London. The room we used had a Rumble 800 into a 4-ohm 6x10 cab. Quite often we'd get there and every knob on the bass amp was turned up to the max, as well as most of the knobs on the guitar amps. Bear in mind this was a room about the size of the living room in a typical victorian terrace. We assumed someone was doing it as a joke, but then one day I ended up there about 20 minutes early, and heard the metal band that rehearsed in the room in the slot before ours. They really were running everything flat out all the time.

I think it is meant to sound like getting a lot of stoned people and swapping the instruments around between them, and then pressing record on a recording device.

Reporting them to the Fire Service sounds like a plan. Best avoided.

It's a matter of tradition for me that every time I put in a big order with Digikey or CPC, at least one of the components I've bought will turn out to be wildly off spec – we're talking resistors rated to 600 volts the size of my thumb, or surface mount capacitors the size of a grain of sand.

My bands are getting louder. I can tell, the dB number on my ACS plug filters is creeping up. A friend lived in a village near Newbury. In the 70's they had an influx of people from London. Straight away the incomers started complaining that there was no street lighting and the pavements were inadequate!! The locals hated them even more after that. The Bull's Head at Barns, a music venue since the early 60's, had the Met Police garage next door. When that was sold to a developer, the pub had several meetings where they informed the developer and counsel that they were a music venue and there was noise, and the builder should take that into account when they designed the flats. Everyone, including the builder, agreed that that would be done. Basically the developer agreed not to put a window in the wall over looking the pub. Guess what? That's exactly what the builder did. As soon as the flats were sold the owners started complaining about the noise! Under current rules the pub had no comeback, and had to spend thousands on noise insulation.

What level do you set you backing vocals compared to the lead vocals? I have seen -6dB me mentioned but I trust the collected wisdom on here more.

Having been in this position and chosen an amp, I'm glad I did. It really elevated my experience and I hope it does for you too. A little Fender Rumble, Ampeg Rocket or the new Laney Digbeth Foundry would be a big step up for not all of your budget. An 8" speaker might be ok, but a 10" one generally sounds better to my ears. Always keep a lookout for used deals too. Here, Gumtree or Facebook marketplace are worth a nose. A little MarkBass or Gallien Krueger might pop up in your price range, or any of the others I've already mentioned could be a second hand bargain.

As someone who has travelled a lot in the US I really enjoyed the cinematography- music not so much
