From personal experience, it depends on where in the north you play. If you go to the north east or up into Scotland, you know you are going to get a great audience. But you wouldn't necessarily say the same for gigs in, say, Yorkshire. We play quite a lot gigs in the south east, which always have good sized and appreciative crowds. There is always a positive vibe, they react and sing along in all the right places. Of course, they're not quite on the same level with the north east, but more fun than most other places in the north.

Thank you @Phil Starr for the advice. Unfortunately, it looks like that DPDT switch (which, as you say is very standard) is attached to the PCB stuck on the back of the unit. I am not sure whether it will be within my capabilities to replace it. That PCB is mounted on a 50mm chunk of ply attached to the metal plate. Not sure why they did that. I assume it was to give it sufficient mass to resist vibration but it also protrudes a long way into the cabinet. I would have thought creating a long lever would make it amplify any movement in the plate. One supplementary question: should there be any wadding in the back compartment of the cabinet; ie the space behind the internal baffle? Would it help reduce the resonance if I put some in? I would be careful not to block the port that is at the bottom of that compartment. At the moment the cabinet vibrates so much (when I hit Eb, E, F) that the amp starts to dance about on top. Thank you for your forbearance. As must be obvious, this is far from my area of expertise.

Just in case it helps, I'd be happy to print a port up for you to play with. This is a cross section of a 125mm port. The purple is the drain pipe (or whatever, it's simply there to show where it fits), the red is the flange that the pipe connects to. It's all parameterised so I just made it 50mm as opposed to 125mm. It even has your name on it I've added chamfers in but no idea if they help or not. Rob

I do. There are certain pubs where you wonder why they do it at all. Places where you think that it must be a front for something else or just a tax dodge. Siilarly there are places that don't want live music that would be brilliant (seemingly). One other thing that happens in Europe, but not the UK, is how bands are treated. In Europe I've never not been fed and watered. If a pub were to give the band some food (chips and sausages/burgers/whatever) and free soft drinks (most of us are driving anyway) it would cost next to nothing (at cost price, don't forget) but change the whole attitude towards the venue.

Fender blacktop jazz bass. Only played a few times, excellent condition. Includes original fender hard case. Made in Mexico, 2013 model. Champagne/pearl colour. I have swapped the pick guard for the purple tortoise shell. Original black pick guard comes with sale. A few of the pick guard screws have some rust on. All specs can be seen in the last few pictures. Sad to get rid of it but I am no longer the bassist in a band so have little use for it. Sounds incredible, the dual split coil pick ups give an amazing tone. Any questions feel free to ask.

The North / South divide is an interesting point. In my old theatre band, audiences generally got livelier the further north we played. Hence we particularly loved doing gigs in the NE and Scotland. That’s not to say we always sold more tickets in these areas, just that the audiences appeared to be more appreciative. This also seemed to be the case with poorer areas too, where the audiences were often more receptive than in the wealthier parts of the country.

2025 SE Bass Basheroonie! Sunday 9/11/25 *CONFIRMED*

The 2 x Paul's (@NancyJohnson & @prowla) and I convened for a lovely curry last night..... and, as Nancy says... it was indeed a windy night Just had confirmation that Chris Childs (Thunder etc) will be a special guest and will do a Q&A, short career chat and demo at around 2pm on the day. We're also working on another guest or two (subject to their availability) as well as some fun stuff... -
Bring it along. I'll have one of the best guitar techs in the UK with me on the day, so it'll be in safe hands.

That`s a good point Daryl, a good example could be the difference here in the UK between the south & the north. In my old band we could play to similar sized audiences and in the south it would be "too cool for school" whereas up north they`d be jumping around and cheering. Yet at the end of the night the amount of merch we`d sell would be the same, so the south liked us just as much, but didn`t show it. For me it was much more fun to play the northern gigs so I could say the northern crowd were better, yet each - going by sales - liked us pretty much the same.

I've recently bought a Stagg EUB, which has recently fallen over. One of the tuners is now a tad askew, but it could also do with a tweak to make it easier to play. -

2025 SE Bass Basheroonie! Sunday 9/11/25 *CONFIRMED*
NancyJohnson replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Events
Basic set-ups are very easy (by basic, I'm saying truss rod adjustment, intonation etc ) and a small amount of tickling only takes a few minutes. Assuming the above actions go without any problem, you may be opening yourself up to additional problems. -

Wombat replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Events
I have an aging Manson fretless where the action was too high and the truss rod adjusted about as much as it could be (in my limited knowledge). A suggestion was to put low tension strings on, which was a great idea, but now I can’t seem to get any relief at the 5th fret - really buzzy. -
Spotted on Instagram. The Superlight bodies are now being built with a swamp ash centre and paulownia wings to increase sustain and bass response. It will be interesting to hear how they sound. https://www.instagram.com/p/DPqvTr0AqZm/?igsh=ZDlrbjR0cXRnMzc0

Looks like the fingerboard was taken off at some point, but they've done a rather crappy job of putting it back on. Either that or it's had some major humidity issues and the neck and fingerboard have shrunk/expanded at very different rates. Either way, it's not a good sign. I you really want to keep it, talk to the seller and get them to agree to an independent check-up - then if there's a major issue you can either fix it and get them to pay, or send it back. If you're not 100% dead set on keeping this exact guitar, send it back and find another one.
