After having a brain-bleed stroke at the beginning of Feb, followed by 5 weeks in hospital and 7 weeks recuperating at home, I actually managed to get out and play half a gig last Sunday. I'd stepped back from my band ('Mustang Sally') simply cos I couldn't drive nor stand up for very long. They replaced me on bass for the time being by a guy with 5 years more experience than me (he's 80!) but as the gig was actually an outdoor mini-festival in West Bay Dorset where I live they invited me to play the 30 minute sax set with them that I used to do. I have to say it was very nice to get up on a stage and belt out One Step Beyond, Geno and some rock'n'roll without falling over, running out of breath or having another Julius (Seizure!) It was also interesting to compare the new guy's bass sound (vintage Vox Phantom long scale and TC Helicon gear) with my Mustang and AG700/Darkglass set up - his sound throughout was a band-leading Jean-Jacques Burnel Stranglers clang while mine is mostly much a more nuanced thump with the occasional clang where needed... Let's hope a few 100% gigs come along before Christmas!

After following this topic and other pa related threads i finally pulled the trigger on a used pair of rcf 710s.Sounded great in my garage studio tonight.First full gig for my duo this friday so we shall see how they compare to the srm 450s we used to use in a previous band .Going to run the double bass through a gk combo with a small amount through the pa.dont know if they will handle the suitcase bassdrum though

If you can play several DB's that would be ideal. Just because it is a "3/4 double bass" doesn't mean too much because the dimensions and shape vary a lot as well as the neck size and shape. I have owned three DB's and one is perfect for my body size and shape, another is OK and the third was not good at all for me. Just a suggestion, play as many as you can before you buy so you will know what feels best for you. Good luck.

OK, if the units are both fairly light and you don’t plan to hump the assembly around to gigs and stuff then screws into a batten are probably fine. I’d still take your measurements off the actual setup though.

Something to be aware of is that the original rack specification was for 19" by 1.75" modules, but as a result of standardisation in Europe it is now a close metric equivalent. Although the new standard allows compatibility with older gear, building your sleeve around an unknown panel may mean that not all panels will fit. David

The 5s are 17.5mm, whether it's a US or Tribute model. They're very similar - the Tributes have flatsawn maple necks compared to the quartersawn ones on the US models, they come in a much more limited range of finishes, and the body woods tend to be heavier, but, otherwise, they're practically identical. The pickups and electronics are the same. G&L Tributes are one of the best bargains out there, basically, and are criminally overlooked, considering their Leo Fender lineage.

Thank you ... 🙂 Double basses are huge fun ... there are very few musical instruments that are as much of an experience for the senses as 'doghouse'. You have so much body contact with your bass that you 'feel' what you are playing in a way you simply don't with bass guitar. With a band - you can rest on your bass between numbers ... or give it a hug ... or if you are of my persuasion a twirl it at opportune moments - or play it at a jaunty 45 degree angle. For Pizz learning good right hand technique will help prevent pain (plucking things like your average Fender Jazz bass will cause blisters and very little usable volume for example). And if it's any more encouragement - my rehearsal and gig transport is an tiny and ancient Rover 25 - my bass travels happily in its soft case - upside down in the passenger seat with its seatbelt on - my amp rig in the boot - and space for one passenger (or one and a midget ☺️) in the back seat.

I reckon it’s best to start out on a proper acoustic upright if you can. The shape of the body is such a huge part of learning the muscle memory
