Really open-minded, just nothing too heavy.

Me having a "sound" wasn't something I'd thought about before the internet came along and put everything under a microscope. I guess I must have a "sound" because I've been told I make all my basses sound similar. Mike Lull and Sadowsky basses through Aguilar amps and 2 x 112 Barefaced cabs gets the the sound I'm happiest with, so I guess that's it. Duck Dunn, John McVie, Nathan East and Reggie McBride are the players who inspire me. I'd be very happy if I got close to sounding like those guys.

Laney Nexus Tube & Nexus 8x10 with Flight Case...

For £400 it is cheap no matter how you slice it. They are tone monsters, and if it only sits in my studio woth occasional use then thats fine! These are basically British made Mesa Strategy Eight:88 amps. You'd not get one of those second hand, with cab, for less than £1800-£2000 even with them being just as 'outdated' in every way these allegedly are! -

Me. I love them. You can see mine in use by some Basschatters on the SW Bash thread. It’s been gigged a couple of times this year. The thing is absolutely awesome. It’s out of date in the way that a Porsche 959 is out of date but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a huge amount of fun and should be overlooked. It’s scary, it’s like a living thing when it’s warmed up and running. The Monaco cabs have made it a viable proposition for gigging and it pairs really well with them. I gig Class D, Class A/B, Class H, no-rig and use and enjoy my whole fleet, I embrace all the differences between them and it gives me an enormous sense of well-being. There’s something very liberating and “two-fingers up to the modern world” cranking one of these monsters. -

I don't know if I have a signature sound as such, but I do have an unhealthy amount of basses which I somehow manage to make all sound the same. Not necessarily identical but it always sounds like me, so I suppose that is my signature sound.

Tonight’s gig may actually be badly paid, ticket sales have been low (which I completely understand, given it’s a halfway point between Christmas & Hogmanay) but it’s never been about the money for me. Hogmanay will be OK money-wise, but I’ve never liked doing it as a gig and only do it with this band so that the band leader can get a good paying gig (he’s a top bloke and I don’t want to let him down). The thing is, I like the band, I really the guys in it and I actually enjoy rehearsals, it just gigs that I find a complete faff/turn off. Maybe it’s over 50 years of gear lugging, hurry and wait, tear downs, load in & outs and the inevitable (mostly late night) drive home that have got to me. We have a Sunday afternoon gig in late January, in Dundee, so it’ll be interesting to see if it’s the time of day that’s the issue (I suspect not). I may well have a sit down with the boys tonight, if the opportunity presents itself, just to let them know how I’m feeling. I’m not about to just quit, I wouldn’t do that to them and, if I did, I would still stay on for any gigs until they got a replacement, who I’d happily share my charts with, if they were required. Definitely a case of watch this space.

Owned from new for around 12yrs, I bought this from Thomann and had it set up for Rockabilly. It definitely feels a step up from the entry level basses and I have used it live a lot. Most of its life has been more of feature in my living room though. The last couple of years I have been coming to terms with the fact that I need to sell it. Space is at a premium, it rarely gets used and I am of an age where the EUB seems the easier option. The specs are here Thomann link if anyone is interested. I added a pickup which has been useful. I can’t recall the make but it was quite a decent one, Shadow, I seem to remember. There is a tatty (by my high standards) gig bag and the strings are currently Gut-A-Like vintage ones Gut A Like strings You’ll see I added a few stickers. These should be fairly easy to remove. I’m happy to do it, or I can leave it. Equally I am happy to add more pictures. It’s currently lent against the wall in my place in Hungerford, where I am Sunday to Thursday evenings. Postage looks too hard to do so it would be a collection. I have gotten it in a Peugeot 107 before - not comfortably, so perhaps don’t bring the family if collecting!

Christmas presents....What did Santa bring you?

My youngest son who recently turned 18 bought everyone alcohol because he could. I rarely drink but I understand it was a novelty for him to be able to do that legally. i got a 4 pack of bottled 7.5% Nigerian Guinness - I’ve not tried it but I expect it to be vile. I’m saving it for the next time he comes for the weekend so that he can suffer the poisoning. -

Musically related: A guitar book, as I need more practice at this secondary instrument. A clip on light for my music stand, so I will be prepared for a difficult pit orchestra job in May. An album by this chap, which I haven't had chance to listen to yet due to travelling to visit relatives. I suspect there may be a "vintage" guitar strap along these lines still to come. In relation to that last picture I infer from his expression that Mr. Harris could be asking whether one is looking at his bird and would perhaps be interested in further discussion in the car park (which, from what I have read, would be in character). -
