If you would like a horror story then there's one horn player I recall who emailed 15 minutes before we were due to start the set (he lived over 30 minutes' away) to say that he had been feeling a little unwell all day and had now decided that he wasn't up to dong the gig. As we were heavily reliant on said horn player to pad things out with lots of soloing, this was a bit of a pain. "They all tend to arrive 5 minutes before downbeat and leave 5 minutes after" seems right to me. I wonder if I'd do the same if I had an easy instrument to carry (probably not). Reading ability amongst the ones I know varies; most are better than me at reading and most (usually saxophonists) are good at improvisation. I recall seeing a discussion on a trombone forum where a trombonist asked why saxophonists were always so much better at improvising. One answer appeared to be than when it came to a practice session the saxophonists were ready to start noodling away after 5 minutes of adjusting their reed, and so got more practice at it than trombonists, who would have to spend 30 minutes warming up with long tones etc. to get the best out of their instrument (I don't know if this is true). If they've played any jazz then they should be happy with taking a break when they're not soloing.
  3. When I was 15 I had saved up enough money to buy a Fender American Standard Jazz or a Musicman Stingray. I went to Denmark Street in London for the first time, tried a bunch of basses and ended up buying a 1974 Gibson EB3 purely because 'Jack Bruce and Andy Fraser played them'. I rarely use it, but I still own it 24 years later. The other one would be a Boss ODB3 (the yellow bass overdrive) because every bass player I knew had one. I used it a lot, but ended up selling it for £30 during lockdown because I was fed up of even looking at it after 20+ years. I probably should have kept it.
  4. I posed about this in another thread, but I once turned up to a gig with the wrong bass. It was one I had swapped pups out with and had just put the pups from the other bass in to this bass as a place to store them. The whole bass needed wring with gaffer tape at the gig.

Hello, I bought this beauty a around 3 years ago from 'Bass Bros' https://bassbros.co.uk/sold-basses/1986-vigier-passion/ I loved it so much I had to buy an old Vigier Arpege, It's been two years I haven't played it, hence the sale. It does needs a new set of strings and a setup. I'm asking the same price I paid for. The description and the professional photos are from 'Bass Bros' A beautiful, very early Vigier Passion bass. This is serial number 036, with the rare full graphite neck appose to the 10/90 necks they used after this. Truly this bass needs to be played to be appreciated, it plays itself and has that punchy, bright tone you’d expect from a Vigier. There are some dings and cracks in the lacquer, as photographed, throughout the body. These are not structural and are just in the finish. Nothing major or that affects the working of the bass.   6. Oh, the effects forum has reminded me of another - envelope filters with no reverse/downward sweep setting. Why would you want that? I get tired of the upwards quacky sound pretty fast, but the downwards "bowwwp!" like Bootsy on Chocolate City (or indeed, like the Grange Hill theme) is great fun and my sole reason for having one.
  7. Lots of things. P basses, J basses.. I guess fender basses. There is this whole 'you have to have one' but the P is like the Harley Davidson of the bass world, iconic, clunky and not that great The jazz is better but not that much. But yet I keep wanting a Jazz, buying it, realising it has too few strings to be useable and getting rid of it. Effects Pedals - they all basically do the same thing don't they, but they all have faults or are too expensive, or you just don't have the space for them Small mixers, like the flow 8 - too small and restrictive to do anything with, maybe unless you were keyboard players, with not many keyboards Iconic bass guitars - they are no better than the others, they just cost more and noone can tell the difference without using their eyes

  10. I was 17 and took the frets out of my first bass, a Framus Star Bass, because I wanted more of a double bass sound. I took the bass to a gig that night and, for some reason, decided to wear sunglasses. It was so dark I couldn't see a thing and was far too cool to take the glasses off! I made so many mistakes that ,at the end of the gig, the rest of the band gave me a huge thumbs down. I've never gigged wearing sunglasses since!
  11. I stupidly made the board before measuring my pedals. I might make this my "small board" and make another to make the layout easier. I have some more PCBs for the power supply, so keep your eyes peeled in a month year or two.
  12. Out of interest, how does this apply to SS amps with a valve pre-amp? Is it only valves in the power stage and that need a load?

  18. I’ve just bumped the sellers thread for the Warwick 5 string . Interesting to see the response. I am a tad surprised that nobody advised me to keep ,and downtune the bass I already have ..

  21. Mmm…if you travelled to Dorset , I’d be in trouble I think . I have a Warwick 1996 corvette which I did list for sale , and kept changing my mind . It would have sold if I posted , and you seem to have the same problem . I’ve got a craving for the low B again. Anyway …Bump! 😀
