cLepto-bass Posted January 8, 2010 Share Posted January 8, 2010 I realise that these threads pop up every so often but I'm just trying to make a decision on what 4x10 to purchase next month. I currently use the Markbass LMII and I absolutely love it for its 'see through' sound nature allowing my Sandberg JJ5 to really show its true sound and I suppose I am after something similar in terms of which 4x10 to hook it up with. I play in a mildly progressive rock band and the sound I am after is that tight, focused and direct sound that really hits you in the chest. Something that can provide me with sufficent amounts of high end sizzle but without losing the fundemenal thump that the bass is all about. I hope all that make sense. I am currenly looking at the choice or 4x10's offered by Markbass and EBS, maybe neo, maybe not. Is there anything that I should really consider before I bite the bullet and go for it. chris_b Posted January 8, 2010 Share Posted January 8, 2010 If you can lift them, Eden, Mesa Boogie and Aguilar are very good. If you're rich and weak, Epifani and Bergantino are great. Then there's Ampeg, etc. I have played an LM2 through all these bar the Eden and it sounded very good. I rate these 410 cabs and would give them space in my house. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.[/quote] I've put my EBS cab up against the LMIII, a Genz-Benz Shuttle 3.0 and a GK MB2-500 - check out my sig if you want to know which one won me over! Seriously, having said that, I don't think you can go wrong with an EBS cab and a LMII/III - I found it a little [i]too[/i] transparent, wasn't the tone I was looking for, but had a lot of help from Darren at the Bass Merchant and had some serious fun putting all the heads through their paces - real pity they didn't have a Shuttle 6.0 in stock! I think you'll have no trouble getting the tone you want out of it. Neo could be an option - the standard Pro-Line is a real beast (88lbs, 41kg) to get into the car . I wasnt sure, after owning Berg gear. Berg gear is top of its game and top prices if you buy new. But bloomin heck, the RS cabs are very very nice. I dont know how they have done it, especially at fairly low-ish prices, but they do a very good job. Plus, if you want to take one, you can! Berg HS410 is very nice...just sold mine on due to having too much cab-wise, but it was very nice indeed. Compact and sounded massive. Go 2nd hand though. But...Im on a similar hunt, but for a portable version of a 4x10. I MUST NOT get another mid sized cab, ahahaha, so this time, im opting for two RS210s. I am putting them on order soon, but waiting for the new smooth black Bergantino-type finish....so might not be with me for a few months. Very punchy cabinets and has the ceramic thump, but still only around 46lbs. Plus, its like a mini light 8x10 if you have them vertical! The HF seemed very sweet when I had a fiddle, which is what Im looking for. Ive had some cabinets (none that I own at the moment) where the tweeter was way too harsh and hissy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.[/quote] The Berg AE410 is a great cab and I would highly recommend it however, to be fair, I haven't tried much of the other stuff that's been recommended so can't tell you how it compares. Suggest you try Bass Direct or another good quality retailer where you can A/B test before deciding.
