What I'm looking for is some recommendations for good bass playing, stuff that might inspire me. Basically I'm not fussed on the genre of music, be it Jazz, Motown, Rock, Pop, Blues, Classical, whatever...I just want to hear some good bass playing. cheers guys [b]So far on my list i have:[/b] Jaco Pastorius - Self Titled (or a Weather Report album if there is a better one?) lemmywinks Posted May 14, 2009 Share Posted May 14, 2009 Billy Gould - Faith No More Larry Graham - Sly & Family Stone, Solo Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath Verdine White - Earth Wind & Fire A good way to cop some ace basslines is just to get the generic Disco/Motown/Funk boxsets that go cheap in HMV etc. You can get the 3 CD sets for around a fiver, loads of top tunes on them. I bought a few a while ago and there's Chaka Kahn, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Rick James..... you get the picture! [url="http://www.spotify.com/en/"]http://www.spotify.com/en/[/url] Re Jaco: Search for Jaco on Spotify and there's 150 or so tracks of him solo and with Weather Report (plus tributes and copies and stuff) The Joni Mitchel Jaco albums are my favorite work from both artists. His website has his work listed by collaboration. Pop the album title into the Spotify search box and you get the tracks and a review of the album. You can't save the tracks to your PC but you can create a "playlist" and collect the things you want to find again easily or play in order. Then when you have found the tracks you want you can buy the CDs (not from Spotify) That way you can listen to a large number of tracks before spending your money. For more fretless wizardry try "Ne Parlez" by Paul Young (on Spotify) and Don Henley "Building the Perfect Beast" (not on Spotify, sadly) with Pino Palladino at his "Jaco for the masses" best. You can also play"radio" according to genre and decade so choose "Soul" from the 60's and 70's and you'll get a random selection of stuff that includes lots of Motown with thier great bass heroes: James Jamerson, Bob Babbit and Carol Kaye. Highlight tribe (Techno with Live bass) Backdoor ...if you can find an album (Drums, bass & Sax mashup) Squarepusher..Drum n bass with live & sampled bass bits. Any Culture or Burning Spear album...great reggae Ozric tentacles 'Pungent Effulgent' think i've spelt it wrong, timeless space rockdubstergroovers-any 90's Ozrics is a good place for melodic bass playing And finally any Kooks bass lines because when i listen to them i don't feel too bad on the bass.
