Second rehearsal with a group. I feel a little tricked into it, really. Told it was "rock", but ended up being 90% straight up blues rock...splitting hairs maybe.

It isn't my thing at all, and not particularly enjoying it. They're unprepared and musically sloppy. .

I'm almost certain that I won't continue.

This makes me sad because I miss playing with people, but it doesn't *feel* right.  Conundrum.

Equipment wise, it was a Tech 21 VT Bass 500 head with a TC Electronic k 212 cab.  It's louder than my usual Orange OBC115, but doesn't sound as warm.

Bass was a Sire V5 (24 fret version).

Pedalboard was tuner, Empress Bass Compressor and a Laney Digbeth DI pedal.  I miss my stacked fuzz pedals.

Is there any scope for you to steer the sound? As a spotty teen I was roped into an indie band and ended up pushing us towards a more groove oriented sound which really pushed us forward

(I was kicked out a year later and replaced by a guitarist who was given a bass)

Sunday and Tuesday rehearsals this week with each of my bands.  Suffering from severe lurgy so both were sit down affairs with absolutely no singing.

Made them fun by enjoying a session man approach to the bass parts.

Rehearsal last night with the latest band that I've been recruited to. We're doing a one hour set at a beer festival tonight and we have a fairly sketchy grasp of the songs, so that should be fun. It's a very odd set list, which sadly includes All Right Now but there's a lot of unusual and unknown (at least by me) songs that should ensure that no follow-on bookings ever happen.

I forgot to mention - I sit down to play, and the studio has bucket-type seats with bent wire legs. I leant back a bit to pick something up (all four legs still on the floor) and the chair collapsed. I'm a bit on the heavy side but at 100kg I'm not that enormous. There was a second identical chair in the room and that bore my weight for the rest of the evening.

I'm trying. I get the impression that the drummer is keen to get a more rock sound than just doing Stones, Credence and Gary Moore. I really dislike Gary Moore.

I'm giving it one more rehearsal, to see how it feels.

It was an instance of the Bassist needing Less Moore

Had the lurgy few weeks back and it left me with a bit of a cough that is slowly going away but a bad cold does that to me these days. If i hadn't tested for it i would have sworn it was covid.

Rest of the band caught it 2 weeks later with no contact from me in those 2 weeks.

Seems to be doing the rounds again.

Got to love your confidence. 😂

Hopefully it went well.

Got invited by the drummer of a band I've depped with a couple of times to check out another band of his which is being rebooted. Went down to meet and jam this afternoon, and it's a four-piece alongside singer, guitarist/bv and drummer, playing upbeat rock/alt-rock/indie-rock covers that aren't my usual fodder but I can still see being fun. All involved seem to be affable and have realistic expectations, the singer can sing, the guitarist had his combo up off the floor and was playing at a reasonable volume... sounded pretty good, so I reckon I'll see where it goes.

Travelled light as I was on the bus and knew there was a decent cab I could borrow in the room:

RB Streamer LX 5 -> Telepath wireless -> Fly Rig v2 -> Markbass Nano 2 -> Hartke VX215

As mentioned in my 1 Sept post above, I had problems with my Lekato WS90 wireless system for the bass at a rehearsal. As a result, I went and replaced the unit with a JOYO JW02S in a hurry as I had a gig the following week. It worked fine last Wednesday and last Saturday for the gig. At last night's rehearsal there was nothing from the JOYO kit - no sound at all. I checked everything in the chain and ended up using a lead, which worked fine.  When I got home, I tried the JOYO and it worked, with no problems. Curious and suspecting an issue in the rehearsal venue, I tried the Lekato kit - it worked fine too. More frustrating than a worry. My current theory is that the WiFi kit in the rehearsal venue is interfering with the wireless systems as I've eliminated the bass (I used two different ones) and the channel pairing (I went through them all and the pairing indicator was confirming a link).

I have a gig next week at the rehearsal venue (a village hall) and I'll take both systems to try again. I always have a spare lead just in case.

The rehearsal itself was ok - we went through the first half of next Saturday's set as they are the newer songs and we needed to polish them off a bit. My fingertips were sore after an bust week of rehearsing new songs for last Saturdays gig (different band) and playing the gig itself so I used a pick for all the songs. I'm used to playing with a pick and it works for the rockier/punkier stuff anyway but it's definitely not for the soul/funk stuff we do. Still, a useful exercise to rty out new sounds and experiment. Sometimes it's easier to stick to what you've always done, but for me a rehearsal is a place to try out different things even if I don't end up using them.

Had a practise with one of my bands last night. Almost all originals. It was good to mee up with the other two, but I'm not sure about some of the material the guitarist is coming up with. He's getting overexcited and churning out a lot of samey material now but he's a very nice guy and fun to play with. The drummer has moments when she clicks and it works well, when she's confident with the song but when uncertain can go very much out of time. I did try a few exercises to try and start listening to each other and get them to both slow down as they really do race away.

Anyway, hoping we can get into enough shape to do a gig by the end of the year. Some of the material is pretty good and fun to play and they're great people.

What WAS really good though was that I got to play through a 4x10!!!!! God, I love this configuration. I have an ultra-portable MarkBass NY121 that I can take to gigs on public transport, but the luxury of a big old cab filled with lovely ten-inchers was a total joy and pleasure. I think that this is "my" sound. Definitely my sound of choice.

Ashdown RM amp & ABM/MAG cab a very good pairing in my experience.

It did sound very good, though I was using the Tech21 for the drive and the preamp on the bass for any EQ so trying to keep the RM as just an amp stage. For some reason I prefer to get any colouration from pedals, bass and cab rather than the amp. Always have. No idea why.

I spent most of the day in a local studio recording some of my own songs. My first time doing my own material and my first time singing in a studio environment. Very exciting, and very strange to hear myself in the headphones as we layered multiple vocal tracks.

I also did octave mandolin and a friend laid down some acoustic guitar. I'll be back next week to do bass, once my bass is back from the repair shop.

We normally practice on a Friday after work in our self christened “Bela Lugosi’s Shed”, but due to a child related commitment, pushed back until Saturday. This meant promotion to Nick’s house as the whole family were out. We demoed two tracks for the new album and worked up a song idea of mine. Nice to bust out my big board in what was generally a very productive day.

Had a crappy one at the weekend.

Ive recently joined a new band that rehearse at the singers living room. It normally sounds ok. Small amps and drum kit. Sunday was awful. the lead guitarist uses a Boss pedalboard and stupidly I mentioned he could use IEM's with it at some point, as he keeps going on about them.

So now he uses just one, and because he is standing in front of the amp, turns the amp down(its only a really cheap 25watt combo but loud enough).

I mentioned to him that I couldn't hear him, and his response almost made me walk out. "its ok, you dont need to.." WTAF!!!!. Because he is loud in his IEM he refuses to even acknowledge  that the rest of us are struggling to hear him. Not once would he entertain turning his IEM down and amp up, because, well, we dont need to hear him.

Later on we were working the ending of a song out, quite a few repetitive stops, and I said we need to decide on how many. He looked me in the eye and said 'im not going to count anything", just listen for (and he played a little riff). Bearing in mind I can't hear him I got really annoyed and we (he) argued that big bands dont work endings out etc.

Am I being unreasonable getting annoyed with the above attitude? None of them have any experience with covers bands, only open mic nights. Id have walked had I not actually been enjoying the songs and playing.

Is he just an idiot Dave ?

I couldn't work with that and would have to explain to him that if the rest of the band can't hear him then mistakes will be made. Does he go thru the PA then put guitar thru the monitors so the rest of the band can hear him.

Difficult when someone simply doesn't understand how a band actually works together.

Feel for you mate.

Thanks. Yes, he just thinks he is right because he knows it all. He really doesnt. Keeps going on about IEM's etc, and as I said, we are in a living room with 25-30wats amps. Absolutely no need for IEM's, but as he knows the pro's use them, he is going to.

Definitely not a team player. To be honest I dont think the band will go anywhere anyway. Singer/Guitarist has a Boss 30watt busking amp, and the lead has the small 25watt. They both think we can mic them up  at gigs 😂

They have done a lot of open mic nights over the years, but never a covers gig where the band pretty much supplies everything.

I just enjoy the songs and playing with  them. Im not going to stress about it and happy to walk away at any point, but im trying to bring a bit of experience to the band.

In which case, everyone else can count and he can be the one standing out as getting the ending wrong!

The problem I have is im the new guy. The others think it's all wonderful and have no idea how basic it all sounds (drummer never counts in, the guiraitst just starts etc).

If the end ends up in chaos that's just more time wasted.

The song in question is Cheap Tricks' Aint that a shame. It has a lot of false endings where there are different bits of guitar during each gap. I dont think we need play them all, or at least go on and on, so I suggested we settle on a number so we can all stop. He thinks we stop when he plays a certain riff, no matter what anyone else is doing at the time. I could let it go, and won't bother bringing it back up next time, but for me his card is marked and my eyes are open to his attitude.

I guess they are in a different place - if you are on an open mic, who cares if you all start at the same time or end at the right time, but if you are there as the entertainment rather than the audience, and someone is paying you, it really does matter. Maybe some people don't realise that until they are there
