Strap Locks

Hello

I use Schaller strap locks on my basses, however, I have a semi acoustic bass which has the strap pin on the back of the body and I find the Shaller uncomfortable against my body. I've tried the rubber / plastic strap locks, but they are tight and have marked the body. I'm looking for something which will be secure but with a lower profile than the Schaller, so any input re suitable strap locks will be appreciated?

Cheers

Hi there

Dunlop strap buttons fit pretty flush to the strap, the push button type?

From a comfort PoV the Dunlop button should fit the bill. However be aware that the locking mechanism requires regular lubrication/maintenance otherwise it will fail. I don't know if buying an after-market set will include these instructions, but the bass I bought with them pre-installed didn't so I was unaware of this and within 6 months one of the locks failed just as I was fitting the strap before going on-stage. Luckily I was able to get through the performance by simply not moving about as much as usual, but it made for a nervous 45 minutes.

I appreciate the replies.

I've had a look at the Dunlop's and they seem to protrude some distance from the body, but the large diameter of the strap button seems good. Not sure I'm reassured by the mechanism fail, nervous is not good! I've also looked at the D'Addario, which looks neat, anyone got any experience?

Cheers

The dunlop button is as people say, more or less flush to the strap, although it does start further out than the strap button, if that is an issue.

Didn't know about the lubrication thing, and never had any failures, so interesting to note.

This is what I was told when I posted my experiences on here after the lock mechanism failed, and AFAICS there was no way of repairing it.

In my case I simply replaced both Dunlops with Schaller StrapLocks. Incidentally this was on a semi-hollow bass (MiK Warwick StarBass II) and I never had any problems with the Schaller locks buttons getting in the way or being uncomfortable.

I would certainly imagine if it failed there would't be much you could do.

I have never had a problem witht he buttons being in the way (but obviously I don't have one that comes out the back like the OP - mine are all normal end ones), although I have had a schaller fail and another almost fail. I like the new end of the new shallers, but don't like the new spike of the the new shallers, luckily the one I had fitted fine in the guitar I was putting it in, so it has that.

It would be nice to just have one type, so that I dind' thave to worry about the straps, even though each bass has its own strap.

Was trying to decide about the new spector what to put on it, maybe the d'addario clip things are enough?

I've been using Dunlops strap locks on all my basses since the 80's and never had a failure.

Lubricating them? That's the first time I've heard that one!!

I'm a rather portly chap and the button sticks into my stomach and even gets caught in my shirt!

I have a couple of Dunlop type straplocks you can have if you PM me your address.

Like these:

No longer need them as I have a massively thick leather strap.

Hello Richard, thanks for the ofrer but the bass has a nitrocellulose lacquer finish and I found these pushed the strap against the body and removed the lacquer.

Cheers

Why not fit another strap button to the heel or side of the neck? Then you can carry on using your Schallers.

Hello Pete, that idea would work but I'm not keen on drilling into the bass which is a 2013 Gibson Memphis ES-335.

Sounds like a different design of strap button is needed, something with a wide flange against the body to protect the finish.

Hope you find something, or can get something made up. Lots of folks on here own lathes...

I’ve not used them myself, but the Loxx system looks like it might not stick out as much as Schaller or Dunlop https://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Loxx_Locks.html

Conversely, you might try a non locking solution such as the D’Addario/Planet Waves elliptical strap pin https://www.amazon.co.uk/Planet-Waves-Elliptical-End-Pins/dp/B005FKF3L6 I have these on a guitar and they’re rather effective and low profile.

A case of Grolsch is the usual trick, isn't it?
