Bass Direct

I have zero social media, so that's me out.

Also, and without wanting to be a constant Bass Direct Basher, these 'new format' emails are far less useful than the old ones. The older ones had a good solid list of what pre-owned stock was available, these new ones just have fairly generic thumbnails that often don't go to the right item and when they do they're linked to FB which some people don't have! Doesn't seem well thought out at all. I won't bother browsing the website or emails anymore, far too much of a faff/impossibility to get to a screen that shows what I have an interest in compared to the prior format. I've probably spend maybe 5-7k at BD over the years on bits I'd stumbled across through either the old emails or the old site, can't say I'll spend the time doing that going forward, just isn't as user friendly or enjoyable to navigate in my humble opinion. Might be fantastic for others, so let's hope I'm the minority!

I agree, While I think the new site is fine, the emails used to be a list of what was available in 4 / 5 / 6 string in price bands, whcih worked for me perfectly. Now it is pictures, I can't see either the price or how many strings it has on a tiny thumbnail, so not so handy.

The new website seems to have bought new pricing!

Postage for a set of strings was £2 but now it is £5...!

Seems rather an excessive increase.

Any suggestions for alternative suppliers?

Strings Direct. Naturally I'm biased, they are about three miles from me and I've always had excellent service.

Bizarre, lovely looking Lakland FL in Bass Direct email but why would the email link to Facebook?

Agree - new e-mails are dull, awkward and un-focussed. Used to read them all. Now I just delete when they come in.

Have to say, if you're going to charge postage rather than build it into your prices, £2 is far too cheap these days.  Non-commercial it must cost at least £3.50-£4.00 these days for a tracked delivery of something like strings, so £5 isn't terrible and is in line with other music retailers.

Having now looked at the two recommendations above for alternative suppliers, Strings Direct offer free first class postage on orders over £30 and GAK is £2.94 also for first class. Bass Direct were £2 for second class, not tracked.

It still seems a big price hike to me and I will now buy my strings elsewhere.

I pay the extra just so we have a bass specialist still in existence. It means there is more choice and a higher chance of better quality gear to try. Worth it to me for a couple of quid. Same reason I’d rather spend £4/5 on a decent pint in the local than £2 for a Carling in Wetherspoons.

No good buying the dearer pint at the local if they don't clean the pipes out occasionally.

A minor quibble with the new website is the title for each bass. For some, the year comes first, for others the make and model. I think make and model should always come first, including number of strings and whether it's fretless, then year, then colour, then if it's pre-owned.

After 5 of either you don't care what the 6th is... might as well save the pennies and start on the cheap stuff given its all coming back up anyway after the 10th. 😆🤮🍻

I'm guessing your idea of a good night out is hanging out with some friends around a brazier with economy bottles of cheap cider, cans of Tennants Purple Tin and Thnderbird wine for the ladies?

Still, that's a better night out than going to Wetherspoons...

Absolutely not... how dare you.

I hang out alone down the back of train stations drinking white lightning out of the bottle then pass out in a ditch. Its a fine and honorable life.

Genuinely speaking, I'm more of 'a few rums at home with some pals' kinda person. Beats having to interact with certain folk that fit the bill of my prior comment!

  • 4 weeks later...

I broke my own rule last week and bought something from the BD website without ringing them up. I normally like to speak to someone to check the item is in stock and that it is exactly what I'm looking for, but it was a generic tool and back in stock (they didn't have it when I was last in the shop) and I was too busy to chat on the phone, so I ordered it online.

I placed the order on Monday afternoon and it arrived on Wednesday morning.
