Stand for bass, any suggestions?

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't considered the effect of my asymmetric bottom... I have ordered the stage legend based on size, if it doesn't suit the Jazz, I'll keep it for those days when I feel more playing the Precision (or the fretless which has a Precision body) and get a neck-dangler as well.

I used to use these before I started using 5 stringers (an alternative to the classic stand) http://www.guitarholder.com

Markbass do a version of this. http://www.markbass.it/product_detail.php?id=54

I have about half a dozen of the Stagg stands: http://www.promenademusic.co.uk/Stagg-SG-50-Guitar-Stand (other retailers are available). The cradle pivots so it copes with asymmetric bottoms. It's also better than the Hercules grab stands for headless basses.

And it's a reet bugger trying to find a stand for a Buzzard. I need the grab stand stem extended by 20cm or so.

This Fender stand takes care of the shape of the jazz bass and is very strong and stable.

I wouldn't recommend any of the smaller stands - that is ones that support the bass from the bottom and don't extend up to at least the 12th fret on the neck, because IME they are unsuitable for an asymmetric bodied bass and their centre of gravity with a bass on is much too high to be stable and secure. I have a couple of these and while they are fine for supporting symmetrical bodied guitars in the safety of my living room I would ever consider using them for any kind of bass anywhere.

The neck on my Wal is too wide at the nut to fit into any of the "hang from the headstock" style stands... It also has an asymmetric body so the low level ones aren't that great either

If anyone knows of a suitable stand I'll order one today.

This one from Quiklok. I have an older version and while it can be fiddly to set up it is completely adjustable and has a suitably low centre of gravity. This new version looks a lot more easy to use.

I used the Ultimate Support GS-1000 with my 5 string Wal Mk3 Custom and now use it with a 5 string Lakland, which has a very wide neck.

The basses are supported hanging from the headstock with no problem.

If this one broke I'd buy another. Well, I did. . . . I have 2.

If the width of the bits that hold the neck are adjustable that looks like a winner...

I use the Ultimate Support GS-1000, and it´s great. Light, surdy, stable and my favorite feature...foldable. :)

I have this and a Hercules. I bought the Hercules first, but the Ultimate really folds up well without any neck sticking out. So the Ultimate is my choice for gigs.

Ordered Stage Legend stand from Amazon on Sunday, it arrived today, tried it, repackaged and return label printed. The old asymmetric bottom problem, plus it simply seemed very unstable even with a P bass on it. And yes, I did extend the backrest and rear legs, nicely made piece of kit but too small for bass, in my opinion. Free return and full refund.

Back to square one!

As you have discovered the small stands don't have a sufficiently low enough centre of gravity when holding a bass and aren't suitable for instruments with asymmetric body bottoms.

You are going to have to either get one that grips the bass at the headstock like the Ultimate or Hercules, or one of the Quiklok models that has adjustable bottom supports.

TBH I've never had a problem finding room on stage for my Hercules stand. The back leg and upright can be tucked into any space between amps so long as the part that grips the headstock sits forward. That was it takes up a lot less on-stage real-estate.

Ultimate GS 1000 ordered and on its way. Full refund including postage from Amazon for the stage legends stand, can't complain, and at least i had a chance to try it out without trekking into Oxford to see if they have anything suitable.

+1 for this.

I have a few of these for my Thunderbirds, which have very asymmetric bottoms. The legs can be moved up and down on either side, although they're not fully adjustable (you have to screw them into one of a series of holes), and there's that extra padded lever thing on the side to prevent slipping sideways (though I've ended up not using it).

It's a good, solid stand that can take reasonable abuse. It does have "Fender" written on the side, but hey ho. :)

Personally I find that these "Tall/hanger" style stands get in the way too much on a tight stage.
On a tight stage I don't use the stand at all. I keep the bass in the gig bag when it's not being played.

Hercules. I've used them for years. You lower your bass into the spring-loaded clip and it closes around the neck.
I also recommend the Hercules stand. I have 2 on stage at all times. The spring loaded clip at the headstock level is solid and the tri-pod base is sturdy and secure. It also adapts to all size and shaped basses. For example it fits very well to my Gibson Thunderbird.
