Now I've never been a fan of the Byrds by any stretch, and so I'm fairly unfamiliar with much of their catalogue... but when it reached 1:43 and the 'guitar solo' started, I was transfixed and not in a good way. I mean, whose idea was it to keep it? Did nobody think to say "actually Rog, could you do another take mate, I'm errm not sure about that one"? Or were they all too stoned to care? Have a listen if you can stand it. 1:43 to 2:20, and then remarkably he has another go at around 2:58 with similarly stunning results. And I don't mean just one you don't like in an "anything by Yngwie, I can't stand him" way, I mean something that is truly awful, dreadful by anyone's yardstick. Certainly somewhat 'dissonant' at times, and lacking technicity, but harmonic rules can be stretched on occasion; it helps 'expand one's conscience'..! I think my favourite not-really-a-guitar-solo happens at about 2 minutes into this live Bo Diddley song. It's kind of awful but great at the same time. Also, he must have been stupidly loud as he's standing in front of two Fender Showman stacks and you can hear the speakers farting out on the low end! [/quote] Yeah, I'm going to stick up for it too - it is rather Coltrane-esque, just executed on a (12-string?) guitar and played in the context of a rock song rather than jazz. I'll admit my ignorance having not been born 'til about 20 years after this came out, but I get the impression jazz and rock shared a lot of common ground at the time, as opposed to these days when a lot of rock musicians refer to "the 'J' word" with a mix of disgust and fear. I remember some guitar magazine transcribed it and had theri version on the CD. If played 'straight' it sounds diabolical. The solo that makes my skin crawl with embarassment is, without a doubt, Hi Ho Silver Lining. Double-tracked, but it's as if he can't remember what he played the first time, so the second take is this awful, fumbling thing. It's truly wretched! [/quote] I also think it's prefect bit of psychedelic music- it's disorienting, unexpected and just plain weird...all of which [i]I'm told[/i] fit the bill.
