No More Limelight Fender Decals

I posted this announcement in the Relicked Basses and Copyright Issues thread...

http://basschat.co.uk/topic/239760-relicked-basses-and-copyright-issues/

But I believe it's worth repeating as I think it got a bit lost in the ongoing discussion there.

I sent Mark a link to the above thread because I thought 1) he'd be interested in it, and 2) since we have exchanged quite a bit of correspondence regarding my new baby I thought it only right and proper to give him a heads-up.

He has asked me to state that he will no longer be supplying instruments bearing Fender decals. The headstocks will be blank and anyone who wants a Fender decal can apply it themselves.

So there you have it.

Well done to the easily offended...

Indeed, a great victory for those with far too much time on their hands ;)

If you want a Fender decal on the headstock of your bass then surely you should buy a Fender. If these Limelight basses are all they are cracked up to be doesn't it make more sense for them to be be branded "Limelight" instead of pretending to be something they are not?

To be fair it was probably going to happen at some point anyway. Mark was already well aware of the issues.
The higher Limelight's profile gets, the more likely they will appear on FMIC's radar.

They are the same basses regardless of which decal they are wearing.

Does it really matter if you're not interested in them anyway?

I just don't get the obsession with having to have a Fender logo. Can someone please explain it to me.
For the exact same reason that you insist on not having a bass with a Fender logo on it... Because you think it's cool.

Labels matter, though. Since I got that Jimmy Saville tattoo on my forehead people react to me very differently.

Well, that is some poor fellow's business wrecked. What a shame, although at the same time, you can't blame Fender. If it says Fender on it, it should be a Fender. I really don't see how anyone could argue with that.

I've got a fake Gucci outfit that I bought outside a porno cinema in Times Square a few years ago . If it didn't say Gucci on it, all I would have bought is a plain cotton t-shirt and a pair of shorts. I would have been better off spending my money on porno in that case. ( Not that I would ever do that. I was only in the vicinity because I was looking for a feminist bookshop. )

Fender is an iconic brand name. When it comes to rock and roll and electric guitars, it is the iconic brand name. That is why the Fender decal is so important. It is disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

Does it say 'Jimmy Saville' or is it a picture of him?

I don't think so, I think his work is good enough for him to put his own logo on. Maybe it might be the start of something bigger.

I don't think so. Nash (for example) no longer apply Fender decals and they seem to be doing OK. :)

I hope this chap's business goes from strength to strength, but there is no substitute for being able to put "Fender" on the headstock. As a short term measure, it will put money in the till.

So was it the comments on the other thread that made the Limelight guy stop putting Fender decals on?
I sent him a link to the thread because I thought he may appreciate the heads-up. He was already well aware that he may have to stop using the F decal if the profile of his work was raised to a certain level, and in his opinion that level had been reached.

If anything he seemed relieved that the time had come to make that decision - he had obviously been thinking about it.

Nothing is stopping anyone from buying a Limelight bass with no decal and applying a decal to it, if that's what they want.
It's not brain science or rocket surgery...
It has maybe done him a favour as now a "new" Limelight brand has be born so to speak and there seems to be plenty of people wanting a Limelight bass so why not brand it a limelight good luck to the geezer I say :)

VERY disappointing.

I agree, but you can't keep something that is successful a secret, particularly something that gets discussed extensively and with multiple pics posted on a public forum as Limelight has over the last few days. I think we may be forgetting just how many people read this forum - a lot more than just those who regularly contribute. As Limelight grows its business it was going to come to the attention of FMIC sooner or later. If Mark continued to use F decals regardless, FMIC could easily ruin him if they had the inclination to make an example of him in the UK - not worth it, imho. And no more Limelight basses, with or without decals.
