YOUR ideas for the Recording forum - WHAT'S HAPPENING...

The people have spoken! And here's what's happening...

Thanks to everyone who gave their ideas for the Recording forum. Here's what we're going to be doing next:

1) Setting up a new sub-forum for Basschat members' music. I was thinking of maybe calling it 'Members' Music', but I keep sniggering at the word 'member' - yeah, I've watched too much Beavis and Butthead - so how about we just call it 'Share Your Music'? If you've got a suggestion for the name then pipe up and let us know ASAP. We'll be setting up the new sub-forum any day now. We'll include a sticky explaining some basic rules (nothing major, just the usual sensible stuff about copyright and offensive material). We'll also include a 'polite suggestion' for anyone uploading to also comment on someone else's music. I've seen this work well on other forums so it's worth a try :)

2) Unpinning the 'Basschat Review Bar and Grill' thread. It's had only 30 posts in two years, so we're going to let this thread 'out to pasture'... It won't be deleted, of course, but if you're keen to keep it alive on the front page then you'll need to post in it.

3) Setting up a new sticky for collaboration projects. We'll start with a sticky and then maybe set up a sub-forum if there's sufficient interest to warrant one.

4) Followed by, in order of priority as voted by y'all...

Setting up a sticky for recording diaries (again, this could be a sub-forum if there's sufficient demand for it).

Hosting a new monthly (or bi-monthly?) remix competition.

Setting up a sticky on all things MIDI
We're also going to, as promised:

Set up a 'Beginners Guide to Recording' sticky - and hopefully resuscitate 51m0n's previous Recording 101 blog (it's currently absent due to a technical issue).

Get more coverage of people's music via Basschat social media.

Do our best to get sponsors involved offering prizes and discounts.
Let's go to work! (cue 'Little Green Bag' by the George Baker Selection ;)).

Greetings all. As you may know, Lurksalot and I have been appointed as Forum Moderators. We're both honoured to 'Protect and Serve' the good people of the Recording section! If you have any questions about using this forum - or ever want to discuss what happens here - then you're very welcome to message us anytime.

Personally speaking, I've always found this little corner of Basschat to be one of the most productive and supportive music-making communities on the Interweb (and I've belonged to a fair few). There's none of the posturing and one-upmanship that plagues other sites. And although our output may be small, it's consistent and continually improving. And long may that continue.

Enough rambling from me... I wanted to take this opportunity to ask if any of you have suggestions for how this forum could be improved or made more useful to you as musicians? I can't promise we'll be able to do everything you suggest, but we'll try.

Charic and 51m0n have already done the hard work by setting up the monthly composition and mixing challenges, which have brought a new lease of life to this forum. Cheers to them both for that!

What I'm planning to do myself is:

1) Set up a 'Beginners Guide to Recording' sticky. We frequently get asked about this, so it'd be good to have a thread that sets out the basics (esp. what equipment is needed to get started), which we can all add to with our own hints and tips over time.

2) Work with the Admins and other Mods to get more coverage of people's music on the BC Facebook and Twitter pages. We're a community of musicians - we should shout about the music our members are making.

3) Try to organise sponsored competitions and discounts with software/hardware suppliers. This is a big ask, but it's something I have some experience of and so I'm going to have a stab at it. Other music forums do this successfully, so we might also be able to - especially if the number of people using this forum grows. If you have links with suppliers who might be interested, please get in touch.

So... is there anything you'd like to see happen in the Recording forum? If so, let us know.

Cheers,

Paul

Thats a brilliant start Paul , and I wish I had as clearer vision  , well done.
I know SI has done a bit of work with a recording blog and I am a relative newbie to but one thing I can help with is maybe newbie proofing some of the tech speak

How about if the mods listen to and leave comments on things other than in the composition competition. Maybe this will encourage people to leave constructive criticism on tunes. perhaps people don't want to be the first to say anything negative....apart fron Nige ha ha. It's not like loads of things get posted.
This is one thing I do want to encourage , I do enjoy listening to stuff posted even if it does prove challenge on the odd occasion .
I lost interest in the mixing competition pretty early, just not enough variety for me, and it feels like it's for a pretty niche group. Of course, that's fine, but I feel that a remix competition would open things up to a much wider audience. I would love to listen to a dozen remixes of a set track each month.
I know what you mean , but the niche as I see it are no more than some peeps who are up for learning a few new skills as the origins of the current mix competition was as a learning resource which Si has very kindly put a fair bit of effort into .
Having said that a Re-mix competition would be great and certainly be more creative for those that have already got there mixing skills down.

Congratulations to both of you I like the recording forum and would to see it do well.
I have a couple of ideas on the same theme :
Play on my track: I know we are all bass players but many of us has other talents and it would be great if we could collaborate. let's say someone wants a guitar solo, keyboard part, programming, loops, mixing, mastering or anything really they could just ask the forum to help out you could even share sounds, pitchers or just offer to print some ones midi part to audio if don't have good enough sounds.
Be my band: This could be a competition. A singer songwriters submits a skeleton of a song then it is up to us to turn it into a fully mixed track.
Sorry for the naff names

I think the recording forum is excellent as it currently stands, a bit of a revamp of some areas as has been suggested can't hurt, but overall I think this is not only one of BCs most friendly forums but also one of the most useful. I certainly spend a lot of time here.

I tend not to listen to stuff people post in threads of their own but I always give every composition competition entry a listen. Maybe those who post their own bands music and expect everyone to listen and comment should consider entering something in the composition competition? This is where I have discovered several BCers soundcloud accounts which I now follow and listen to all their new stuff. If people get to know you through the forum they are more likely to listen to your stuff.

My new studio is disconnected from the internet (because it is too far from my wireless router and in a shed) so I can only listen to stuff on laptop speakers in the house (unless I hook it up to the big stereo) This is my excuse for my recent lack of input over here.

having said that competitions to win stuff sounds great Paul, I'm up for that.

And a continuation of 51mon's recording blog would be good too, all good stuff in there.

Cheers guys, all very positive and good to hear!

I'm keen to expand our ranks over time and get more of the BC regulars involved in Recording. Especially in terms of dispelling a few myths about it being all very technical and nerdy. Well ok... we can work on the first one at least :D

also, maybe if members are working on recording projects, they can have running posts about what they are doing, how they are doing it, if they had a clever idea on a mix that worked being able to share it... would give a flavour of how other people record and mix etc.

id certainly be up for sharing my mix secrets etc as i use them on projects

also happy to moderate/contribute in anyway if you need it paul

^ Cheers Rob! Very good suggestions there mate.

I'm going to put together a 'Guide to Recording' sticky, which will pull together a lot of the resources that otherwise get lost on here (and I'll also add some basic pointers for beginners - aiming to encourage other BC'ers to have a go at Recording).

I like the idea about recording diaries (like build diaries, but for new tracks that people are working on) and sharing mixing tips. 51m0n has done a good job of encouraging folks to share good advice in the mixing challenges - but it might be good to collate the advice shared into a single thread, for ease of reference.

All good stuff :) Keep the ideas coming folks!

I've a tonne of ideas for the Recording Blog, but the blog just disappeared one day a while back, if we could at least get the BLog info up as stickies (particularly the compression one!!).....

Not just the sort of 'How the big boys do it with unlimited budget' stuff you find in tape-op and mixmag ionline (and SoS to a degree); much more things like, how to record your band in a room so well with just a few mics that it sounds like a 'proper recording', which leads to mic types, why they work like they do and discussions on their placement. Simple room acoustic improvements (this would be very simplistic, and also a few 'cheats' to get by if you are trying to turn the front room into a vocal booth for an overdub or whatever. Strategies for recording your music when you ahve limited kit. Why you will only save money if you save up for certain really good bits of kit rather than getting a cheap alternative now, and how to keep recording with very little until you have what you need. All that kind of guff :D

This reminds me I need to get the Kit Richardson mixes up, snowed at the moment with work in the day and mixing (very very) late into the night on an interesting project at the moment (metal meets symphonic, always tricky :D)

^ Spot on Si! That's exactly the sort of resource we need. Your blog was great - I hadn't noticed it had disappeared until you mentioned it (I'll raise this with the Admins and get it sorted).

Would certainly be great to continue your advice on practical tips for DIY band recording. I think a lot of people here would find that very useful indeed.

Cheers mate and good luck with that current mixing work... metal meets symphonic? You're not working for Candlemass, are ya??

There could be a sticky on all things MIDI,
Like tips on programming, what CC#'s do, and how to use them, what they mean etc.
All the stuff people get hung up on regarding it.
Good Libraries and Synths could be in there as well.
Plenty of links out there that would be good stacked together in one place.

Great idea Garry! I'd benefit from this myself... MIDI definitely isn't my strong point, so it'd be good to learn some new tricks in that regard.

Consider it added to the shopping list ;)

 • 2 weeks later...

I'd look at thinning down the number of pinned posts. There's one that is supposed to be on-going but in 2 and half years has only attracted 29 replies. I can't help but think it has passed it's usefulness.

The "recording 101" section should make a couple of others redundant too with a bit of luck.

Paul and Si, if you only get these things done I'll love you both long time.
