Hard Rock Covers Band set suggestions...

Hi all

Yep, I know, those 4 words 'Hard Rock Covers Band' will be the equivalent for some of you of a night spent nailing your hands to the coffee table, whilst the telly is stuck on 'I'm a celebrity' , so if this is you  move on now and read no further.......

Right

Those select few that are left (thanks!), I've been playing with my mates for years, we used to gig a lot 12-15 years ago but with all the usual family, work stuff that happens this tailed off. We've been getting together on a semi-regular basis for a while and last night we decided to put in a bit of real effort up until Xmas and try and get a set together that could get us out doing the occasional low key gig.

I really do mean occasional, a gig every month or two would do us fine. ( Yep, we are 'hobbyists' too! ) But this means that we need a set that is going to be 'all killer no filler', and pretty immediate in terms of reaction, as we aren't going to be into 'building a following' etc, just pitching up and rocking your average Joe/Jo hard then going home for a cup of tea and a biscuit before being woken by the kids at 5am...

We're all pretty competent, two guitars, drummer and vocalist (still learing, my brother in law) who may be able to do a basic bit on keys too.

So, suggestions please, I'd say Hard Rock is the best descriptor for us, we like our metal too and don't mind getting heavy, but are conscious that launching into Rammstein may not be what the average punter is expecting down their local. So, you know the score good rocking stuff, that we can play with a smile on our faces and put on one the punters too.

Any ideas, especially forgotten gems welcome (or new gems that an old fart like me might have missed  .....)

Cheers

Jason

Yep, guys that's the right level of hard. Cheers.

Paul, yep a couple of 'classic' metal numbers would be good, we do some Maiden already (Trooper, always wanted to do The Prisoner), bit of Metallica etc.

Don't mind going a bit softer too, quite fancy a bit of Black Stone Cherry, any experience if there stuff goes over well?

I'm after specific tracks that catch the attention, be good to have a few modern classics (if tere are any ;) )

Keep 'em coming!

We have a female lead vocalist but all of our stuff is male lead at the mo' (going to amend that over the next few weeks) so it's a bit difficult to select suitable rock songs although she seems to cope with Zep, Aerosmith and Queen numbers quite well (mind you since it's my daughter I have to say that <_< ).

Sorry I realise I'm not helping here with your set list  . How about a bit of Budgie (Breadfan)? It would also appeal to the metalheads since Metallica did a cover.

Just avoid doing too many obvious numbers...
Our current set, all proven, many go straight into the next song, all 4 of us sing so loads of harmonies etc:

Set 1
Burn - Deep Purple
For Whom The Bell Tolls - Metallica
Anastasia - Slash
Shot Down In Flames - AC/DC
Open Your Eyes - Alter Bridge
Knights Of Cydonia - Muse
Creeping Death - Metallica
She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
The Trooper - Iron Maiden (I sing this)
Blackbird - Alter Bridge
Enter Sandman - Metallica [cheesey play it in rotation]

Set 2
Cry For Help - Shinedown
Slither - Velvet Revolver
Blind Man - Blackstone Cherry
Aerials - System Of A Down
Everlong - Foo Fighters
You Could Be Mine - G n R
Fool For Your Loving - Whitesnake [based mainly on the late 80s version]
Through Glass - Stone Sour
Man In The Box - Alice In Chains
Embers - Delirium [1 of our own]
Children Of The Grave - Black Sabbath
Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden

Encores: Rebel Yell (drummer sings), Toxicity, Cochise, Rainbow In The Dark, Out In The Fields, Youth Gone Wild.

Good stuff all.

Cracking set Adrenachrome. Might have to knick it all! ;) There's some old friends amongst that set list from back in the day when we were gigging lots, good to know that they can still deliver.

That's the approach we want, not all too obvious (but not scared of the odd cheesy number - we were knocking out Final Countdown a couple of weeks back after all..)

It may seem a bit naff, but songs like Born to Be Wild, and Come On Feel The Noise are good crowd pleasers in a rock set. One of the things to remember is if you`re going to be playing to the average Joe/Jo, anything they already know is likely to get a better response. There are some great rock tracks out there, but familiarity gets people up dancing/drinking more, which encourages venues to keep the bookings coming in.

You Shook Me All Night Long is another song people seem to go crackers for.

There's loads of rhythm and blues/rock n roll standards that will stand up well to a more vigorous approach:

See You Later Alligator - Dr. Feelgood
Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry
Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
Red Hot - Brian Setzer

...are a few that spring to mind.

Truckstop

Just as an observation, don't feel that for "hard rock" you have to dumb-down your set too much. We get a number of bookings precisely because we don't just do the played out lizzy/dc/jovi numbers. Sure we do a few predictable ones but we love almost all the songs we play and have really put some work into developing our set with the best suited person singing each song. Most of our audiences appreciate some of the authentic details in the arrangements that many covers bands miss.

some cracking set lists being posted on here, heres the one we do which isnt a patch on the rest of them, mind you i havent picked any of the songs either.

Sweet Soul Sister,
Gimme All Your Love,
Accident Prone,
I Surrender,
In A Broken Dream,
Is This Love,
Who`s Cryin Now,
Rock And Roll Children,
Mr Crowley,
You Give Love a Bad Name,
Final Countdown.

Girl Cant Help It,
Ghost Of Me,
Boys of Summer,
Love Walked in,
Forget Me Not,
Rainbow in the Dark
Separate Ways,
Cant Stop Lovin You,
Here I Go Again,
Start talkin Love,
All Night Long,
Hollywood Nights,
Its My Life,
Dont Stop Believing.

Lots of cheese involved and lots of blank faces when we play Ghost of Me by Doughtry :) we had initially tried Things My Father Said by B S C and Second Chance by Shinedown but they were greeted by more confused faces, i think the type of audience also dictates the choice of songs.
