1. The original bass player Chris Layhe was a year or two above me in school. Nice guy as I recall.
2. I went to his gig in Liverpool last night. It was fantastic.
3. Went last year to watch and it was a great nostalgia fest'. . If Wilko is supporting in Manchester then I'd be inclined to get a ticket.
4. Thanks. I see it's repeated at about half one in the morning. I'll record it.
5. As our gigs so far have tended to be local, we've taken our own posters down a week beforehand. Also we generally play on a designated rock night so the punters generally know what to expect.
6. After updating on this thread this morning I've done Get Lucky, Even Flow and Reelin' In The Years. A great way to spend a couple of hours
7. Thanks for that Dingus. Nice avatar BTW. Always appreciative of a pic of Vicki Coren. Not sure about June Ackland tho'
8. John Wetton and Dick Nolan (It Bites first time around) both use/d Zons. Good enough for me. Can't afford one though . Whatever happened to Dick Nolan?
9. I hate mayonnaise on my sandwich. Why can't I have butter
10. Have to agree about Liverpool being a bit crap for buying basses. Dawsons do have quite a few but they're mostly precision/jazz basses of the Fender/Squier/Ibanez/A N other make. Very few interesting ones though there may have been a Gibson in there the other month and I did buy my BH250 from them. Curly music have even less choice and the staff are even less helpful than Dawsons. Good bars/venues Musicman20 - what do you want? There's endless chavvy disco and karaoke shoite around concert square and Matthew street and The Academy may have someone decent on. Try the Caledonia on Catherine Street or The Grapes on Roscoe Street (not the one in Matthew Street) for a bit of jazz, real ale and something a bit unusual (The grapes this Thursday has Swingology for Gypsy Jazz stuff). For a Friday take the Wirral line train to Hamilton Square and get a taxi to take you to The Swinging Arm for a bit of rock music. Sorry thread drifting away from bases to beer. Feel free to pm me for a bigger list of alehouses
11. Long Shot - Annie Haslam Longer Shot - Stevie Lange http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI3BJcwg6UI
12.
Turns out she fronted a touring and recording band in the 70s, still records now and then
Well it must be Kate Bush then .
13. Soundcloud and website for the covers band. Think it only cost a few quid to register the domain name and our guitarist updates it. http://www.survivors-of-mild-peril.net/
14.
And it's the easiest bassline, but they react like you're some kind of god.
. Yeah, cool innit. If only my OH wasn't watching and my daughter wasn't singing with us I'd be nailed on to pull an old slapper.
15.
Always wanted to play 'The Chain' Fleetwood Mac.
We've started doing this one too. Many people only know the second half (the F1 theme) and look a bit confused during the first half. Then the penny drops
16.
Shout - Tears For Fears! I've never been able to convince anybody to try it in any of my bands ever. They're always worried that you can't do it without synths, but you totally can if you get creative! Truckstop
We're doing the Disturbed version. No synths Metropolis Part 1 for me (if I have to make a choice)
17. Pete, it was great to meet you and Gary Davies last night after the St. Helens gig. Great songs, a great sound and great playing from you and every one in the band. I would cite many influences in my bass playing but I'm always amazed by those bassists whose sound and playing seems to be accompanied by an economy of movement in both hands as I always feel I'm thrashing around the neck. The best sportsmen always seem to have time at their hands/feet to make their sport seem effortless. The same applies to great bass players and watching last night I got the same feeling that you always had time and I went away from last night's gig inspired to improve myself as a bass player. Thanks for a great night. Hope to get to the Crewe gig.
18.
I don't see the point in videoing gigs with a smart phone, what're you actually gonna hear recorded through such a piddling little microphone ? I'm guessing people who talk all the way through the show are there as some entertainment package or something. I remember going to see a gig at Ronnie Scott's, the place was full of guys in suits, all talking throughout the show, it's corporate entertainment .
Smartphone recording - agreed Talking at gigs - In my experience they are not corporate jollies but are normal punters like me who are either pissed or not really interested, Alternatively they are the WAGS who are only along for the night out
19. I was at the Manchester Apollo gig on Thursday. I thought the sound was great, the band looked like they were enjoying themselves, particularly Mangini and Rudess who looked to be having great fun mooning to the cameras positioned around them and yes JM was audible in the mix although I think he fluffed the tapped section in Metropolis. My big gripe from the gig? We took our seats in the middle of the stalls a couple of rows behind the desk and to the left with a lovely view of a large yellow platform containing the pre-show projector screen, which was about the size of a small fridge and a large movie camera mounted on a tripod. Admittedly there was a sign saying the platform would be moved once the show started. Ok fair enough but then they stuck a huge chair for the camera op to sit in. Had we stayed in our allocated seats we would have had a crap view. The security guy pointed a couple of empty rows a little further back and a little further left where we could relocate to. We did so and had a great view. This brings me to gripe number 2: I'm thoroughly pissed off with people who go to a gig and then spend most of it videoing the gig with their smartphones . I don't mind the odd photograph now and again, I do this myself, but to spend large parts of a gig taking video and spoiling the view of those around just really gets my goat. There was even a guy doing it at Nearly Dan last night. And don't get me started on the twonks who hold conversations through most of a gig ........... .
20. Great gig for us at Stamps Too last night. First time there and we were a bit worried coz the band area is very small. A handful of mates turned up but the place was mostly regulars who stayed for the whole thing and seemed to enjoy it (lots of cheers and even a few up dancing). The management seemed to like it as we got an extra £40 - result
21. I'd like to give a shout to Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith. Great groove especially a song like Last Child.
22. I use a 5 string for just about everything. Occasionally swap to 4 string if I want a change. It has a Hipshot D tuner that I can engage very swiftly for some of the songs.
23. Good lord, how long is a piece of string? How about Teen Town? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDQlSSOXU6A, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIkAYCdP5tQ
