Heaviest Riff Ever!

To my ears and middle - aged sensibilities , a lot of the more modern super heavy bands that people are posting don't really hit the mark in the heavy riff stakes . It's all heavy and no riff . The short repeated phrase just isn't memorable enough .

Indeed!

More Germans:

Both these bands are transporting me like a vortex back to student nights in the 1980s that I would rather forget , if only because I wish it was those days again now . Pretentious , angular , obtuse and downright mental . Right up my street .

P.S It was me who took the first Stump album to America in 1988 and gave it to the DJs on college radio in Seattle and San Francisco , who played " Buffalo " quite a lot for a while .

Maybe not the heaviest thing ever (whatever that may be) but what happens from around 3.30 onwards in this song certainly made me sit up and pay attention when I first heard it. And when I heard it again just now. This registers pretty high on my heaviosity meter - it just sounds...er..heavy.

Looking forward to listening through all of these later on! :)

My suggestion would be pretty much anything from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (I think that's cropped up already).

Not riff-based, but I once blew up a pair of speakers playing 'LFO' by LFO at loud volume. That was certainly a heavy moment - be careful if you choose to give it a listen, the bass on it is beastly.

Melvins- The Bit

The live version of this is ridiculous.

Wow , are this lot still going ? I saw them opening for Rush , it must be nearly twenty years ago , and people were booing and throwing stuff at them .

Cool. :)

I don't think a fascination with 'Pretentious, angular, obtuse and downright mental' music is a particularly 80's thing. I get the impression a lot of bassists here don't like stuff like Palais Schaumberg, DAF or even Stump. It just doesn't groove enough, or something like that, and it's got 'funny' noises in it.

I have a half eaten tub of Philadelphia Light in the fridge that's heavier than this :)
