Heaviest Riff Ever!

The Deftones thread made me think of the riff at the end of Diamond Eyes (the song not the album)... is it the heaviest riff ever?

Well, I still don't think it beats the riff on Headsty by Martin Grech. (It's a B side and the riff is right in the middle of the song)

what are the other contenders?

Not sure if it can be classed as a riff, but I still think Rats!Rats!Rats! is one of the heaviest things I've ever heard, thrilling stuff.

hehe!

you probably mean 'heavy' to people that don't really experience 'heavy' on a regular basis ;)

Here's some examples of the heaviest riffs known to man or beast...

See, I don't find either of those heavy really. They just sound like someone had a bad breakfast.

I wish I could find a streaming copy of Headsty so you'd know what I was on about. I'll check out all these later, thanks

Yeah I looked for it and couldn't find anything, looking forward to hearing it, loved a lot of Open Heart Zoo but never bought anything else by him.

heh!!

that's the thing, you'll just have to quantify what you mean by 'heavy'. The heaviest music ever made could easily be purely unplugged acoustic by dint of it's emotional 'weight'.

Even though I fly the flag for 'heavy', I cant stand that shouty, screamy stuff that 'the kidz' these days like. Deftones sounds to me like a child having a temper tantrum. I find it all bluster and no substance.

One man's sh1t sandwich is another man's gourmet.

Still, I think we can and should all agree (with me ;) ) that 'heavy' is in the realm of heavy rock, and in the heaviest of that realm, the tunes I've posted are accepted as the heaviest examples. People who don't know that genre might not understand it, but that doesn't make it untrue.

Locust Star by Neurosis is killer too. Especially the ending.

"heavy" to me means a riff, generally quite a slow riff, and yet with so much "energy" that it makes your spine tingle and your head bang at the same time. Just listening to the build up to the riff (there has to be contrast else how do you make it sound heavy?) makes your entire body tense, knowing what's coming, and then the riff kicks in and the tension goes but something else more powerful replaces it

I'm not doing a very good job of explaining this. Anyway, feck it, it's in the ear of the beholder
