Yeah, the riff starting at 4.00 mins is great on this

Also love a bit of Sons of Otis or Lightning Bolt for heavy riffage

I'm not sure if its the heaviest thing ever, but despite repeated listenings I still don't know what the bassist is doing in this song.

But if its Deftones heavy I can never go beyond 'You've Seen the Butcher'.

I am enjoying this thread. Lots of stuff I don't usually listen to.

Here are a couple of oldies - maybe not as 'heavy' but great riffs.

Budge have been mentioned, Guts plus Crash Course in Brain Surgery cover by Metallica (their own 2003 re-recording is superb, as it happens). Here is another one of their great riffs - Zoom Club

And Queen might not be the first band that springs to mind when talking abut heavy riffs but Son and Daughter from their heavier first album has a pretty fine riff going:

Far too many to choose from! For me, a heavy riff has to have a groove and impact, rather than maintain a constant level of ferocity. But I appreciate that tastes differ and that's one of the things I like best about 'Heavy Metal' , that so many variations of styles come along, take something and add something and it develops.

Liking Rammstein at the moment, and also partial to a bit of Mastodon.

No idea how you get the video's in. Old git, with addled headbanger brain cells....

(Update, old dog has been taught new tricks!!)

Just put the link between the expressions "media" and "/media" - both in square brackets, though I seem to have noticed the forum software sometimes does this automatically.

Thanks Bert, but even that's lost me! Can't even find find where it says media let alone any brackets. I blame Slayer... \m/

You need to type it in. But generally pasting in a simple form youtube URL does it automatically, unless it starts "https".

Sorry, mate!
What I personally do is Copy the web address while watching the vid on YouTube.
Then, when writing the post, I Paste that web address into my post to be, and by hand write the media stuff before and behind the link. I couldn't show you how it looked, because the forum software would immediately try and interpret it as instructions

But I'll try again, using extra spaces this time

Yup. That works. Just have no spaces, and it will function.

Also read Mr. Foxen's post!

I'd love to have been at the hippy fair they did as one of their first gigs and checked out the looks on the faces when this dropped. Still heavy as hell, I need to learn it actually.

Cave-In - 'Big Riff'. More of a classic take on what id class as heavy.

Also a good one, I do like a bit of Cave In.

Although it may be 'cool' to name riffs written in the 1970's etc as 'the heaviest riff ever', I find it eludes from an honest answer to the question... unless people haven't heard rock/metal beyond 1980. When there are/were bands like Strapping Young Lad, Pantera, Morbid Angel, The Dillinger Escape Plan etc kicking out ridiculously heavy riffs over and over... saying Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath for cool points is just silly... in my humble opinion x
