Hmm... I think I'm looking for something a bit less 'retro', if you know what I mean.

Never heard of ACG. I take it they are custom made? They look nice..... surely they must be more expensive though?

Yeah they're generally custom made and they're a lot cheaper than you would expect :)

Alan sometimes makes stock basses aswell :D

Apart from the BTB's are not most of the high end ibbys 34" ?? My SR765 certainly is...

I have to ask the question though, why new? There's some lovely mint s/h stuff within your price range....

Ibanez SR or a Yamaha TRB sound like a good fit.

Never heard Lakland referred to as retro before? The 55-01/55-02/55-94 body shape is their own and fairly recent history so not a fender rehash body shape...ah well...ACG are beautiful though!!!

Well, I guess I'm looking for 'the right sort of curve'. ;)

Go secondhand rather than new and you can get a lot of bass for well under your budget.
Like I've said before I've got 5 strings by Shuker,Roscoe and Warwick and a Tobias 6 string,
all for well under your budget and none of them cost £1000.
Lately I've seen basses by Musicman,Warwick,Sandberg,Lakland and even Warrior for
under a grand.

Pity - they meet every other requirement, and are damn lovely to play too...

How about Dingwall? My latest squeeze is an Afterburner 5 - it is glorious and definitely not retro looking!

Can't go wrong with a TRB (35" scale neck & a great low B string) - you should be able to pick a good s/h one up in the for sale section for about £4-500.

This...and throw in Sei and Sadowsky, Overwater etc and you have a hell of a lot of bass for £1500 potentially. SH prices, of course.

+1,000,000

ACG are a one stop GAS stop!
As Charic says, there's some tasty stock instruments available right now which come in around your budget.
http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Available/22/ and http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Available/17/ might be right up your street?
They'll certainly meet you tone requirements and then some :)

My suggestion would be a Sandberg Basic Ken Taylor 5. You could buy a new one built to your specs for well within your budget. Massive choice of finishes, GREAT neck and monster sound (very versatile too). I usually only like 35" scale fivers too, but the string tension on the low B on my KT is perfect. http://www.sandberg-guitars.de/basscat-overview/basic-series-top/basic-kt (if you click "gallery" and scroll along, there's 34 different versions to see, although there's hundreds of possible combinations!)

I think a Musicman Big Al 5SSS could be up your street if you can get over the looks (its a marmitte thing).

Its a tone monster and I've love one myself if I could find one for the right price in the classifieds.

They're actually pretty comfortable basses, so there's logic behind the design!
I tried a single pickup'd variant last year and it was incredibly versatile, I reckon the 3 pickup jobby would having dizzying possibilities, but in a good way :)

I'm not connected with either seller but I used to own one (before I moved back to 4 strings) and they are fantastic basses.

Chris Horton was selling one (as somebody previously mentioned) but I believe that's now been sold.
