Looks like his move to LA will pay off- great interaction between kit and bass and a truly frightening array of chops. The best I've seen in this style for a long time. Jaco on acid. However...... There will be people on this forum who will want you removed from Basschat for posting that link, accuse you of having a tash, bad clothes, Demand you hand all your Basses over to the Police, and your family taken into care. bubinga5 Posted July 23, 2011 Share Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) is it a show case for his chops... is it musical bass playing.. i think its both... but it does get to a point where hes just showing off and it sounds a little silly.. no doubt hes amazing on the bass.. but overall its fret w***ing... though im betting when hes not doing all that he can lay down the groove like no other.. i bet his skills pay the bills for him edit.. i was listening to it without the vid and it just sounded bad.. hes awsome no doubt but he just sounds like some idiot on his own personal journey through some free jazz mind trip..... sorry.. I don't think Hadrien would want that to be listened to as a finished product anyway, more it should be watched as a celebration of what improvised music is about! Fun and chops! Truckstop[/quote] thats part of his thing.. i wouldnt say hes just "having fun with the drummer".. he very often plays in this style.. yeah sure he could do anything on the bass.. but imo he does like to explore the fret board alot.. and it sometimes comes across as a bit self indulgent.. but man if you got it... ha, i wish i could muck around and get a bit silly like that though.. They gave someone who has never heard music in his life a bass guitar and Hadrien is the outcome. Jazz sax and trumpet players do this sort of thing all the time, and you don't hear accusations of w*nking being thrown about there, so why because it's on a bass? He's got crazy chops,but often he uses them all the time and it becomes a barrage of notes-like at Bass Day the other year. Just not my thing, it bores me... but I am VERY pleased it was not a slap-fest... and the guy is good. Very good. I wish I could one day had as much talent in my whole body as his index finger does. I am an average rocky, poppy sort of player and I have no issue with chops and all the rest - I admire and lust after that kind of wisdom and ability - but this is one of the least interesting examples of the "high end" market I have come across, just way too much going on. And, though I may not be competent enough to discuss this thing, but let me ask you something - what's the point of doing the 15/8 thing if you're laying down plain 4/4 ideas over that? It's a bar of 4 and a bar of 7/8 which isn't the trickiest time sig for guys of this calibre to feel. I guess that's where Chris Coleman is having the most fun tho. Interesting responses and no outright flaming from anyone- for sure he isn't to everyones's taste. On watching it again it's his fluidity on some of those runs that blows me away.
