5. Hi Guys, Just wondered if anyone has any tips on buying an electro acoustic to practice on, maybe around a couple of hundred quid, probably second hand. Was considering Crafter (allways seems popular), Takamine, Fender etc. Play Jazz Basses most of the time. looking for something with a relatively good sound. Any advice much appreciated.
6. No one has mentioned Return To Forever, Stan's the man, and the combination of him Corea, Lenny White and Al Dimeola has its moments. Or what about Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham is 'god of drums' in my book (although I always thought Rick Laird was a bit mediocre). Isn't Jazz Funk fusion? Love everything funky from Stan, Marcus to the Brand New Heavies etc. After all - Funk is its own reward !!!
7. + 1 for a compressor. I think it is the best bass effect and never switch mine off. Got and EBS Multicomp which is superb, really tightens up the sound. Do agree with the string comments, have tried loads but allways go back to Rotosound roundwounds (FM66's) very light but great tone and gives me a lot of control over the sound (vibrato/bends etc). Cant believe the difference in sounds of different strings. Keep experimenting, you'll get there.
8. Know what you mean, if you need a wah/Q as good as it gets imho, bit of a wrench but need to liberate some cash, can't believe MXR have stopped making them, must be recent cos they're still available in some places, hopefully someone will get great use out of it.
9. On e-bay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pristine-MXR-Bas...=item1c1e8966e7 Ends Saturday Pristine MXR Bass Auto Q Retail Circa £140 Bidding starts at £50 I am selling my MXR M188 Bass Auto Q pedal because I never use it. This is a great and very versatile effects unit which can generate anything from a ‘Phat Funky Wah’ to a subtle ‘crybaby’ tone which is great on solos. I think these are now discontinued, which is a shame, but you can still pick them up at the mo: http://www.amazon.co.uk/MXR-M-188-Bass-Aut...h/dp/B0002E52PW The control setup gives you total control over the effect which drew me to the pedal: • Range knob: controls frequency floor of effect The • Q Knob: Adjusts the intensity of the Wah effect • Volume : controls overall effect output level • Decay knob: controls the drop-off of the wah effect or transition between wah and shimmer • Blend knob : controls the mix between auto-wah and Shimmer • Rate knob: controls the speed of the shimmer effect Band switch selects favored frequency range of effect. The pedal is built like a tank and sounds awesome. Being MXR you know that the quality is impeccable. If you check my feedback you will see that I really look after my gear. The pedal is in great condition. I don’t have the original box but will pack the pedal properly. It comes with original instruction booklet (which I have written on) and will be posted 1st class recorded. MXR’s Bumph: Using textures to enhance your sound enhances your personality as a player and can contribute substantially to defining your signature as an artist.. Whether on record or played live, the magic of an exquisite musical texture played in an inspired moment can be the stuff that launches legends or cements them in history. With the MXR Bass Auto Q, your own moments of magic await you. The Bass Auto Q can instantly "funkify" your sound and especially exceeds when applied to sustained notes and chords. Incorporated into even the simplest rhythms and lead lines the Bass Auto Q can create dramatic, counter rhythmical textural effects. Some of the more basic features of the Bass Auto Q include volume and decay controls while the "Q" and range and controls provide for super precision attenuation to accentuate even the subtlest but critical nuances of an expressive sound. Dial in the variable shimmer effect that is unique to the Bass Auto Q by tweaking the rate and blend controls to determine the shimmer effect's dominance against the auto Q effect. Encased in a classic MXR, indestructible black metal housing, the control stencils and pointer knobs are intelligently screened in "glow in the dark" stencil for performances on dark stages. Loads of Demos online You Tube etc Any Questions, please ask.

11. Ibanez SR500, got one, love it, easy to play, very versatile (bartolini pups etc) around that price on e-bay.
12. Hope all goes well, music's a great healer for all sorts of stuff.
13. Guys, You were all spot on, put on a set of flats, adjusted the action a bit, tweaked the eq and there she was, nearly sounded like a proper bass player. Will have to work on technique a bit before I gig with it though. Got a great female vocalist for my soul band so this will come in really useful for the slow soulful ballad stuff. Cant wait Hi bassatnight, no sunburst, got it from GAK in brighton £370 - 2 years old and never used - totaly immaculate - I changed the bridge because I don't like fender stock bridges (flimsy and imprecise) - got the 201 on e-bay for £37 (couldn't afford a Badass, but got to say I really like the 201, straight swap with no mods). Cheers again Guys.
14. Cheers guys, I liked the technique video. Getting lots of Mwah when not plugged in so I will tinker with my amp, see if I can tease it out there. I'm still looking for a Carl Martin Parametric Eq, at the mo I'm using a EWS trilogic pre-amp to add punch, I'll mess with that as well. As allways, you've all been a great help. Let you know how it goes.
15. Hi guys, Have just got hold of a beautiful MIM Fretless Jazz Bass which feels and sounds great. Has a Gotoh 201 bridge fitted. when I plug it in I don't seem to be able to get as much of the freless 'Mwaah' that I hoped for. Sounds great when not plugged in! Playing through a Phil Jones Briefcase. I'm thinking of different pickups as these are standard MIM ones. Any thoughts. I wanted to keep the tone of the bass (which is awesome), so was thinking that active PUP's were out. will be playing mainly Jazz/Soul. Any suggestions? will the pickups make the difference? I'm a PUP numpty I'm afraid. Budget is tight so can't spend fortunes. Advice much appreciated.
16.
In his own words (from a Guitar Player interview by Bill Milkowski, Aug 1984), when asked why he likes the old Fenders so much: "the old Fenders really have a punch, and not just a treble punch either. More like clear low mids; plus, they're real quick. You can play that fretless real fast. And I feel real comfortable with these. I've had lots of people make basses for me, and I own different sorts of them. I've probably owned over a hundred in my life, but none of them sound like these old ones." He then goes on to say " One of the main reasons I use these same old basses is because I've worked so hard and so long on the road - forever - that to get another new instrument at this point, I really feel like I would have to learn how to play it from scratch. I mean, I know everything about these basses of mine, every bit of chicken grease and drop of sweat that's ever been on them".
Spot on, didn't know about this interview. Must be true about eating fried chicken before a gig and not washing his hands then. Although, he was renowned for his wind ups. I've got the Jaco book and it's a good, if somewhat tragic, read. I have allways played by ear and done a reasonable job most of the time, however, I have just started to get my head around theory and am brushing up on my reading skills. As a result I decided to learn some of his stuff and I have to say, whilst I allways thought he was genius, I hadn't really appreciated how cleverly put together his stuff really is. shall we start one of these on Jonas Hellborg then? (I like his playing).
17. There you have it, on sober reflection I agree with the general concensus. When you think Stan played an SG before Alembic came along (I thing they're awful for Jazz & Fusion - Great for Rock) Probably a bit of both ie; choice and being happy with what he had. As I say, full of admiration for Berlins ability, just think he comes across bad in the interviews I've read. Not forgetting that Jaco was an arrogant sh*t at times, like telling Ron Carter he was the best, just had a little something special going on. I remember hearing on the radio that he'd been beaten to death in Florida and thinking, well, that was inevitable having followed Weather Report then his solo escapades. What I thought was really sad was that the people who I was with didn't know who he was. If he'd have got his act together, he could have become royalty like Stan, Marcus, McLaughlin, Nathan Watts, Prestia etc. Not belittleing mental illness, bi-polar, depression etc, think it would have been a different story if he'd have been ill today, given how treatments have progressed. Do think that there's merit in the statement that there's a fine line between true genius and being a nutter (look at Van gogh). Unfotunately, can't get a handle on the genius bit. Enjoyed the views guys, glad I'm not too far off the mark.
18. Sounds good to me. I've had Peavey's in the past and they were great. I sold a Ricky 4001 in the early 80's for peanuts when I got married. I wish I still had it cause I'd sell it now for loads and buy better basses for a fraction the cost. You're right though, if it feels good, and works for you, doesn't matter what's stamped on the end.

20. I often wonder why Jaco used a Jazz Bass when he could probably have had anything he wanted. At the top of his game, I would imagine that any manufacturer would have given anything for him to be seen with their gear. I understand that boutique basses were probably rarer than they are now, but the likes of Alembic have been around for a while. Don't get me wrong, I love Jazz Basses, my main gigging bass is a 60's re-issue which I love but if I could afford an Alembic or a Wal, guess what I'd do? I've just watched Modern Electric Bass for the umpteenth time and what struck me was, whether it was playing a fretted Jazz or Jerry Jemmotts fretless, it still sounds like Jaco. What do you guys think. Also, whilst I am in awe of Jeff Berlin's technical ability, and I would love to have a fraction of his skill, in every interview i've ever read with him, he comes accross as an arrogant, self opinionated ponce. I've never read an interview where he didn't re-iterate the story of how Jaco told him he was a better soloist. Who's he tryin to convince? As I said, I probably would be happy to have a fraction of Berlin's ability but when I listen to his stuff, it leaves me cold, yet when I listen to Jaco on something like Weather Reports A Remark You Made, I can feel a lump in my throat (no I'm not choking on a biscuit and my Mrs' hands are nowhere near my neck). I'm obviously a big Jaco admirer, but I love many other bass players, in fact too many to mention, and Stan's my man when it comes to influences. Anyway, rant over, no gig tonight and one glass of Merlot to many!!! - see what happens (or maybe the Prozac stopped working!!!). Set me straight guys and gals, am I turning into a cantakerous jelly brain.
21. Hi Guys, Promised I'd feed back, didn't get the bass, went for over £400 so a bit beyond reach, still, at least the seller got a decent price. So I'm still trawling the net. Thanks again for all the advice.
22. Guys, Really appreciate all your feedback, I'll give it a go, if I win I report back. Thanks again.
