1. Looks very interesting with a range of Fuzz, distortion and OD pedals modelled. http://www.sourceaudio.net/blog/post/the-soundblox-2-ofd-micromodelers-are-in-stores Any thoughts?
2. Always loved music with prominent bass eg Joy Division, Motown, Motörhead. Then started playing bass then understood why I don't like Metallica..
3.
It's sunday evening and I've embided a fair amount of 'medicine', but I've been wondering... Does anyone else feel that you may have been born (or raised, or whatever the correct 'nurture vs. nature' term might be) to play bass, or a bass-type instrument? I was wondering if people become attuned to particular types of musical instrument for some reason whilst they are forming e.g. to be attuned to rhythm and bass, or melody, or choral, or whatever? Do you feel that when you found your 'inner bass player' you'd come home in some way, or even that you don't yet think you've found what you're looking for? Were you born to be a bassist?
4. Here's a selection of my favourites: Van Conner (Screaming Trees) Rich Mullins (Karma to Burn) Scott Reeder (Kyuss) Al Cisneros (Sleep/Om) Paul Hinojos (At the Drive In) Al Cisnero is the one I'm listening to most at present. Check out his band Om, just drum and bass...
5.
Have you checked out their demo videos with the various suggested settings?
Yes I have now checked out the SA website, but not much there to help me. However, I am diligently working through the settings to see what it can do, which is great fun and I've got some wierd and wonderful sounds out of it. Any advice on where to put the BEF in the signal chain, is it better before or after distortion/overdrive?
6. I agree punk saved rock and led to the movement away from self indulgent music to more immediate rock. Maybe punk and what was influenced by punk wasn't the technical music beloved of musicians but it was something raw and must important of all fun
7.
Here in the UK punk was a wake-up call for pop and rock music that had become increasingly complacent, self-indulgent and dull. For me it wasn't so much the initial music which was fast furious and fun, but the DIY spirit that came immediately in it's wake and has ultimately led to the diverse range of music available to hear today. 8. I have just bought a Source Audio Bass Envelope Filter (not the Pro version). I am enjoying experimenting and have found some settings I like. However I am new to envelope filters and don't really understand what I am doing yet. So I was wondering if anyone has any recommended settings or favourite settings I could try out. I should say I am not trying to imitate any famous artist, I just want some suggestions I can have a go with.
9. I have now bought an envelope filter. I changed my mind and I bought a Source Audio Envelope filter. First impressions are very positive and it even has settings that approximate to some other filters including the MXR. I also bought an SA orbital modulator, again very positive first impressions and a nice orange colour to boot.
10. I have a Super Synth and you do need to play with the editing software to get the 'right sound', but tweaking the presets is easier than starting from scratch. I find that putting the output signal through a overdrive (Green Rhino) gives it a nice edge and that it works well if you blend the wet (SS / overdrive) and dry signal through a Boss LS2.
11. I've now received my Twin Earth pedal. I like it a lot, but there is some loss of low end. However, I compensate for this with the clean signal mixed in with a Boss LS-2. I've only used it at home, so I've no idea whether this would work in a band situation. It is I believe like a muff (although I could be wrong), but has a harsher fuzz at the more extreme settings. The alpha omega switch is supposed to change from retro to modern fuzz, but both sound pretty similar to me. The chaos setting is fun, mad and chaotic, but I'm not sure you would ever use it, as this setting makes a real racket without actually playing anything. Overall, a great pedal if you like noise and want something a bit different. Best of all its British, relatively cheap and I have done my bit to support what little British Industry we have left.
12. Thanks all for your opinions and advice. I think I'll give the MXR a go.
13. Just ordered the Twin Earth from Nine of Swords. Sounds mean on a guitar, hope it sounds good on bass too.
14. I am looking to get a new envelope pedal, I already have a BassBalls, but it doesn't do it for me. Ideally I want something that can provide a range of sounds, but isn't too complex or expensive. I am thinking about either the basic Soundblox bass envelope filter or an MXR M82. What do other Basschatters think about these pedals or is there another pedal I should consider?
15. I bought a Boss LS-2 from Badass, delivered within 48h and pedal exactly as described in the advert making me a happy customer.
