OzMike Posted March 5, 2011 Share Posted March 5, 2011 I play in a blues / rock / psychadelica / etc trio (mostly covers, some originals) and we're about to start gigging ... but are stuck on what to wear on stage. If it helps, our band is called "The Rude Grooves" and we're using 70's porn movie posters as the basis for our promos (which actually works out a bit classier than you might think). I am no fashion diva, but I know we want to dress a little different / better than the audience... but not so much we're doing the 60s / 70s hippy thing, or end up wearing suits. G/f is not much help as she varies between 'you look good in anything', 'what about this?' (showing horrendous outfit found via google) and 'if you look too good for other women, I'll kill you'. Maybe some examples from other people will help? Oh ... and I'm (ahem) almost 40, our drummer is tattooed and pierced and in his 20s, guitar player / singer is a dead ringer for one of the Proclaimers and in his early 20s. garethox Posted March 5, 2011 Share Posted March 5, 2011 Pretty obvious really I suppose, but just wear what you are comfortable in - nothing worse than standing in front of people feeling self concious and having to entertain them.... I should know as I have had to wear red spandex in a 'previous life'! My current bands just wear anything really. The Who tribute - pop art type stuff or clothes that reflect The Who but that is a pretty broad spectrum and the other band whatever we roll up in. A few years ago I did a country show and was too embarassed to stop at the local cashpoint as I looked like Colt Severs! Ultimately you should only wear stuff you are comfortable in or you will look silly. My band has 2 members who tend to dress fairly normally and 3 posers - of which I am one! I'm with Burrito on this one. I think a lot of audiences expect a band to dress appropriate to the musical style. Also they've usually 'dressed up' in some way to go to the venue, even if it's just a 'TFI Friday' pub gig. I play in a blues/rock/Americana outfit, and most of my stuff comes from charity shops. Typically a loudish pin-stripe suit jacket worn over a plain shirt, skinny leg black jeans worn over short length cowboy boots. Oh, and of course plenty of rings on both hands. Bigger venues tend to get the whistle out and shine the shoes as i think its worth the effort. A compliment was " the bassist loooked cool as f..k- like one of the Fun Loving Cannibals" We played an outdoor thing last year and had to follow a band dressed up in various costumes - drummer's verdict " We were outstaged by Mr Incredible" by & large wear what your comfortable in - I've got a hankering for a tartan suit!! [/quote] In Hollywood film-making, merkins are used in films where they are worn by actors and actresses to prevent inadvertent exposure of the genitalia during nude or semi-nude scenes. If a merkin was not worn, it would be necessary to restrict the shot to exclude the genital area; with the merkin in place brief flashes of the crotch can be used if necessary. Kind of a late Beach Boys look, had the Beach Boys continued wearing matching outfits. When I get a picture, I'll post it and we can all have a good laugh. Hopefully we can avoid looking like overdressing tools; the frontman wants to go this way (i.e. overdressing), and I might suggest he does what he wants, and us other two can do the same. It seems to be quite a popular 'look' here in Estonia for the frontman to be dressed up and the rest of the band members to look like they are wearing yesterday's clothes. Suits me just fine! 4-string-thing Posted March 6, 2011 Share Posted March 6, 2011 I've just left an 80's "glam/hair metal" band, so it was spandex, legwarmers, mesh vests or leather/studs with wigs and mirrored aviators.
