What I play em' through!

The rig is out of commission right now due to housing (close quarters neighbors) but in a few months, we'll have a house and all that will change! Right now, it makes a pretty good sub for my surround sound. I'm also looking for a new bass head. This Bassman 400 is okay for making noise, but I'd really like to go all out and get that 1200W Mesa head I've been looking at!

Cheers mate :) Gigged it last night and it was immense.

At the end of the day output Watts are irrelevant really. Decibels are what really counts.[/quote]

I didn't mean any offence at all mate I just thought Behringer used PMPO.

Nice one Dood!
That's a beast of a rig!
I'm pretty damned jealous, but not at all of having to move it :)

How you like the HyDrive speakers?
Also, how'd you like the simple valve pre, as you've been through a lot of more hi-tech rigs in the past, is it nice to be home?...

Hey Matey! How's things? You well!?

Thank you! - Actually, One of the reasons I like it - is that the HX range are really light! - ok, not Tec-Amp light - but even an 'invalid' like me has no problems lifting these cabs. I recall my epi' 610 was about 36Kg and these 4x10's are 32Kg (and obviously two small boxes as opposed to one big one!)

Tonally speaking - Well, I know that I'll certainly get a lot of joshing for the journey I've been on for the last few years. I'd got it in to my head that I was after this undefineable tonal heaven. I've owned some truly amazing gear but the laughable thing - is the sound I was after had only been I guess what my brain was used to all those years ago - and that was my old Hartke rig. Don't get me wrong - I still stand by what I say about the other rigs I have owned. I still adore the Tech Soundsystem cabs I owned and the ISP is brilliant, along with the Powersoft amplifiers.

I did spend time messing around with the EQ on 'flatter' sounding systems - which would lead me to a simple answer. Dood doesn't do 'flat response' and looking for a flat response rig was a bit of a waste of time - well, other than using it as an expensive learning exercise.

The Hydrives defintely have a voice of their own - there's a Hifi clarity and a bite to the top end which is great - but in comparison to the 4.5XL (A/B'd recently) there's more body - what some people may call 'warmth' in the tone. My EMG DC's actually need that I feel to balance their response a bit, as they are toppy in comparison to say, my old P style EMGs - and it works nicely.

Oh the simple preamp! - yes yes - I have had 30 band EQ's and routings that go around the houses - but this is - well - I did wonder if I was going to get on with it! - I can understand why the tonestack and preamp design has been so successful over the years. It's built in curve when everything is set to 12 o'clock is so simple, but just works.

I really like it and I am hoping that my 'rig' related GAS has been stemmed!

It's very nice to be home.

Chuffed it's all working out for you mate :)
I'm being drawn more and more to a nice simple set up.
As it is, I don't touch the controls on my LittleMark, bar Gain and Volume, thing is though, is it flat response, or is it that "MarkBass" sound...
One thing is for sure though, I'm gonna stuck with Aggie cabs for the long run I reckon.

Cheers,
Eude

Wow! That is an epic equipment journey you've been through Dood. I'm glad you've come back around to Hartke though as they seem to have something so 'honest' about their gear. It's really gear built for the working bass player I feel. Now when can I expect to hear this mighty rig at a Within The Void gig?!? :)

Aww Thanks mate! I'm glad too! - Well Within The Void is a verrrrrrry slow moving project! - I am literally chomping at the bit to get material out and released - but I know we are up against a lol lol 'distance relationship'. JP and Thomas both live over in LA - a mere 5400 odd mile trip to band practice!! However, we ARE definitely working - Then we can get a tour sorted- so hang in there!

Thanks matey! They Aggies are great and definitely have a nice scoopy tone to them - probably have something in common with the Hartkes!

I'm 37 and bought the Aria Pro on my 18th birthday for about £280. The typical 'that looks good for a Thrash band' type thing :). Everytime I ever played anyone else's bass, I never found it as nice or easy to play as the Aria. Then I picked up the Peavey Combo 300 for about £250. Massively loud and always handing for pulling widdling guitarists out of their Megadeth nirvana! If anyone can furnish me with info or thoughts on the Aria, I'd be happy, cos I know nothing about the model specifically but always wondered where it sat in the scheme of things (i.e. how much is it worth ) probably not much, but like I said, I always found it better than other things I tried. Not much on it 'cept 'Aria Pro II SLB series electrics' and '0012035' stamp.

Also curious bout where the Peavey combo originated (Model 115BW, Serial 3A-01417190). I dont see 'em anywhere, except one that went on Ebay recently for just under £300. This has to be early 80's or something and im guessing came from The States? It's damn loud when needed.

i know this isnt high end gear, but having lived with 'em for nearly 20 years, I'm curious!

Only ever been in one band and that was 13 years ago. Finally last year having made the move to get back into playing, I decided since all these youngsters have loadsa gear and I work, so I deserve summat nice. Found my way to Geddy Lee Jazz's. So I got one 2nd hand off EBay (and a gent that posts here). The neck is Smooth as, though the strings slightly wider than the Aria and the weight heavy. I wont sell it, but I need to get used to it. I can hit it though, and I like slow n heavy, so it suits me and it looks lovely (sorry bout the paw marks!). Picked up a Big Muff so I could get a little gruff out of the Peavey cos those dials dont really do much, it's mainly just volume when I need it. SO... time to up the rig gear... you might have seen my fussing (research) on here, but opting for light weight, size and performance I picked up a new Orange TB and Jack London's Barefaced Compact. Sounds lovely so far, but I need to crank 'em away from home

I will likely sell the Peavey now as I dont have the space, but I'll keep the Aria as it's probably a low cost bass and so worth more to me to keep around.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here we have my recent purchase from Mike at Purple Chili !

My gorgeous new rig consists of 2 x PCB112NT cabs

F1 mark bass head, with one cab I get 300watts at 8ohms and the full 500watts at 4 ohms when using both cabs.

The cabs look so cool and retro, with great build quality. The sound is just amazing, I have found my dream rig.

Update;

Before and after Ampeg goodness!

The B500DR has moved on,
Replaced by an SVT 4PRO (USA built)
" class="ipsImage" />

" class="ipsImage" />

" class="ipsImage" />

" class="ipsImage" />

Look what arrived today :)

" class="ipsImage" />

Mono-bridged SVT 4PRO through an SVT 610HLF (US made) in custom road case!
Must pop the SVT into the rack case with the Tuner, but you get the idea!

In terms of amps and basses-I am one happy Basshead indeed!!!

Considering a very similar rig myself. One of my Ashdowns will be moving out to make way for either an F1, F500, LMII(I) or Orange Terror Bass, depending which I prefer the sound of. Might add another Aggie too.

I use an Ampeg SVT 300 and an SVT IIP with a couple of 8x10's for larger rock gigs,
although for everyday stuff I use an 80's SVT III head and an Ampeg BSE 4x10 (saves my back :) )
