What's your fantasy Lotto jackpot bass gear shopping list?
Delberthot replied to Painy's topic in General Discussion
I would have a Spector NS4 built exactly like Guy Pratt's, a Status Stealth headless 5 string fretless just for the hell of it and a Warwick Thumb NT5 with the double slanty jazz pickups -
anyone who knows me knows that I change my gear regularly just for the hell of it. Ordinarily I would have done a few gigs with it only to discover something else, sell this and then start the whole process again. Given the current situation I haven't had the opportunity to use it at a gig so it's still minty fresh. I did a lot of research before buying this over anything else, including the B3N, one of the Boss multieffects and something else and then I remembered that I don't really use effects regularly

Where is best for strings these days?
Delberthot replied to pintspiller's topic in General Discussion
I've been using D'Addarios of all flavours for years now. I generally get 7-9 4 hour wedding gigs out of the EXLs, 6-7 from the Prosteels and I've yet to see the end of usefulness with Chromes -
I like flashy and did consider having a natural finish quilt top jazz body from Warmoth with all birdseye maple neck
-
I had a 2u GK amp with a big vent in the top so used a 3u rack
-
I had a G30 and active basses and didn't have any issues except that it used to interfere with the radio mikes regardless of what channel I was on
-
I like the look of that active 5 string PJ - £179 with a case

Actives basses into preamp pedals - opinions?
Delberthot replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Effects
My Bassbone V2 makes everything sound incredible - active or passive -
yes please. I used Schaller strap locks for years before I discovered that these stop your bass moving around as much.

I've just had a look and the side dots are where you would find them on a fretless bass. I did have a plan to make lines along the top so as not to interfere with the look of the maple board but never got around to doing it. I'm not worried if it doesn't sell. The more I think about it the more I think it might be a good winter project to get myself a good Sting Police era fretless precision for not a lot of money

After watching a recent Guy Pratt video where he uses the Boss one I decided that I must have one. After I picked myself up off the floor at seeing the prices that they were selling for I looked for an alternative. I spotted the Behringer ones but they are discontinued and selling for silly money. This video is really helpful so I have ordered the TC one. The combination of my RBX 765a and this pedal has the 80s part of the set list sorted

I missed out on the one that was for sale on the forum last week and I think that for the first time ever was genuinely disappointed that I hadn't seen it sooner so set about looking for another. A casual browse on Facebook marketplace brought up one about 20 minutes from my house and another two PMs from members on the forum who had them as well. I decided to go with the one on Facebook as it looked really nice in the red ( I must admit that I also like the green and blue ones ) and picked it up. I gave the fretboard a good clean with lemon oil and the body a wipe down with a clean microfibre cloth. This was followed by a new set of D'addario Prosteel EPS165 strings plus a 135 B that I had bought separately some time ago A quick play revealed that it badly needed setting up and when I got the capo and feeler gauges out I discovered that the neck was poker straight with absolutely no relief at all. The truss rod nut was quite tight so I gently moved it and thankfully it began moving no problem at all ( I wonder if this was why it had been so straight, maybe tightened really tight and the owner couldn't loosen it) I had to remove the little black plastic thing that protects the body from the allen key as I couldn't get the allen key in properly with it in place It is in incredible condition, I can't quite work out how old it is. I tried one of the websites and was told it was 1989, 1999 or 2009 by the serial number. The plastic is still on the control cover. There are a couple of light dents in the paintwork but no scratches and the only damage to the paintwork that I can see is on the headstock. The hardware is a little tarnished in places due to age but everything works I absolutely love it and the only way that I can describe the tone is that it is very 80s and will really suit a lot of the stuff we do with the band when the time comes to gig again. Anyway, enough waffling - now the pictures:

I didn't realise that Jaydee were still making basses. Is it just me or is this seriously good value: https://www.jaydeecustomguitars.co.uk/bass_price_list_gbp.html I have a vague memory of drooling over a Calibas in Guitarist or Bassist magazine

Fragile is still my favourite album of theirs. I like songs from other albums like Siberian Khatru but this album I can listen to start to finish. The Yes Album is another favourite of mine. I remember hearing Roundabout when I was in 6th year at school when Virgin 1215 radio station first launched. That was a good year for music for me. Got my first listen to Faith no more and the Chili Peppers as well in the common room

I took a couple of pictures last night to show that there is a wee bit of the paint chipped away where I have made the neck pocket larger on the bottom of the body. I could be touched up by a paint pen or similar if it bothered you enough. This also means that the neck protrudes by about 1-2mm over the bottom of the neck pocket

I tried a few preamps before getting my Tonebone Bassbone. Absolutely amazing sound from this that's it's nigh on impossible to sound bad regardless of what the controls are set to

I had an LH1000 and it is possible to overdrive the preamp valve. I used a Tesla ECC803 (I think) and coupled with a Precision running EMGs at 18v I could get the valve to overdrive quite easily - even though it isn't meant to be able to do this. Absolutely incredible sound through Laney Nexus 4x10 & 1x15 cabs

Personally, if I have had a bass that is an absolute looker but I haven't gelled with it I will take pictures, list it for sale then put it back in its case or bag an don't look at it again. There's nothing that will make you think twice about selling it than pulling the bass back out again for a play or a look. Then you look at the pictures months or years after you sold it and think, bugger - even though it was the right thing to do at the time. Some examples:

I've sold my EBMM Stingray and Fender Player Precision in favour of 2 HB Jazzes. I just fancied doing a bit of simple modding plus I enjoy trying different things. My £140 JB75 has £400 of EMGs and preamp and £150 of HIpshot Ultralite tuners plus a Fender High Mass Bridge. My £88 JB20 has a set of Tonerider pickups, £50 Sixstringsupplies solderless wiring harness and Hipshot Licenced ultralites. The basses are solid and a good basis for doing stuff to them. I'm in the process of working out what to do next. Those BZ-6000 NT basses look like incredible quality https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_bz_6000_nt.htm
