  1. I was looking in their miscellaneous basses section for something a bit different to the usual P, Jazz and MM type basses not expecting to see anything like this
  2. Having a browse as you do in Thomann and I spotted the B208FM at the relatively ridiculous price of £365 so I decided to buy one Here's the link as they seem to have more of them. I think it's been discontinued in favour of the spalted maple one which is £599 and looks like the same bass. https://www.thomann.de/gb/espltd_b208.htm I remember going to McCormack's in Glasgow and drooling over the one they had in stock and had a good play with one
  3. I had an SB615 a few years back and I remember it being a very good bass. It's just a pity that yours is passive as I liked the active controls and am in the market for a new 5 string. That being said I'm sure it will still sound really good
  4. Second up is my second set list bass - the JB-75MN This one has a Fender high mass bridge, EMG BTS System running at 18v, Hipshot USA Ultralites and Xtender. This one is fitted with D'addario Prosteels I am also known for saying that I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than have a tort scratchplate but I decided to take a walk on the wild side and see what all the fuss was about. I think it was about £8 on Amazon. I had to drill a side jack as the BTS System has 4 controls
  5. First up is my metallic Blue JB-20. I have fitted a set of Tonerider pickups, Sixstring Supplies Solderless wiring loom with CTS pots etc, Licenced Hipshot Ultralites and D'addario Chromes (45,60,80,110) I more recently have started using a different bass for the first half and another for the second half. This is my first half bass more suited to the set list.
  6. I've used regular flatwound strings on an acoustic before. I don't like the screetchy squeaky noise that the bronze ones make when you move your left hand
  7. I was in a Beatles tribute band and used an Epiphone Gothic Thunderbird. I did later get myself a Rickenbacker. I've also used a 12 string bass in a wedding band and a Riverhead Jupiter (Spector/Warwick clone) with stainless steel rounds in a big band & Dixieland Jazz band. I also played a Yamaha TRBII fretless in a classic rock band
  8. I built a '57 using Warmoth parts and a Lollar pickup when it was still feasible to do so. The exchange rate means that you're into brand new US Fender money for the cost of neck and body alone
  9. I had only just packed it away when I realised that I am bound to be asked the weight. I have weighed it using the "holding onto it while standing on a set of scales and then again without" method. Comes in at 9.8lbs or 4.45kgs
  10. I'm going down a more modification route at the moment and didn't want to start messing with this so this is now up for sale. This is a 2004 Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray in Desert Gold with matching headstock. I've been in contact with the original owner and apparently these were made for NAMM 2004 - all 97 of them. It also appears to have what look like black poles on the pickups like the stealth models. it's an incredibly beautiful bass and the colour really pops under lights. It is in extremely good condition with only a few small marks - the first shown at the bottom of the front face of the headstock and the others are on the back of the body in the form of a couple of small dinks and a few scratches. The last of which I didn't notice until I held the bass up to the light. Other than that it has very little signs of use. there are some light marks that you can see under lights but nothing obvious and consistent with a 16 year old bass that has been very well looked after. The rosewood fretboard has also aged really nicely and is really dark compared to some of the more modern basses I have owned played. This is a 3EQ model and everything works perfectly with no pops or crackles. The Jack socket is also sound and I have also recently changed the battery. As far as sound goes, you know what to expect with a Stingray and this doesn't disappoint. It has the classic Stingray growl whether fitted with roundwounds or flatwounds and sits very comfortably on a strap. It also comes with an original Musicman case that has the classic Musicman case smell. If you've ever owned a Musicman or a Rickenbacker then you'll know that they have an amazing smell similar to maple syrup. This is an absolutely incredible bass and I will be sorry to see it go. It always gets a reaction at gigs as it's such an unusual, vibrant colour and the sound is top banana. The only trade that I would be interested in at the moment would be a straight swap for a Spector Euro 4LX in a nice colour like amber, cherry, purple or similar but it must be in great condition and I am open to reasonable offers. Postage will be dependant on who you would rather use. I normally use UPS which comes in at £25, Parcelforce is £16 and TNT is £22. This is going by the Interparcel website. I am also happy to meet up within reason for a socially distanced exchange. And now - the porn 😛
  11. I normally attach the pots to the scratchplate first then the cable going from the volume to the tone control. then connect the pickup and in your case, finally the bridge earth cable
  12. I ordered a brand new Fender American Professional Jazz bass last year from PMT. When I got it I could see it had clearly been the display demo model so after a quick email they ordered a brand new one from Fender for me and took the other one back
  13. I don't know enough about this so hopefully someone will be along to explain it but I can't understand how the preamp can get 18v and the pickups 9v using the same two batteries. That's why I thought it was 18v for both and either 9v with one battery or nothing
  14. I feel the same most of the time but I have to admit that if my numbers came up on the euromillions and Sting decided to sell his '57 single coil Precision. I'd be all over it
  15. I would completely agree with that. I do have a cheap bass on a stand in the sitting room but my gigging basses live in their gig bags in the hall beside my other gear. My reasoning being that they're protected from most temperature changes, the strings last longer and they don't get dusty meaning that I don't have to clean them as often
  16. Would I be right in thinking that the basses that are suffering changes due to the change in temperature are out on stands near a window or door? I'm just thinking that a bass in a hard case or even a gig bag shouldn't shift unless you leave it out in the sun or cold for a long period of time. I've left basses in a car in the middle of summer and when I unzipped one of the bags to check, the bass still felt cool to touch

But if the bass is only getting 9v from the two batteries and you remove one then it will still be getting 9v so it shouldn't affect the output level - I would have thought that would only be the case if running at 18v, although I could be talking complete cobblers Or would it be 4.5v from a single battery which would be too low for the preamp to use? Would it work with only 1 battery or would that be break in the circuit if there was one missing?

  20. I personally think that older MIM Fenders aren't very good but anything from the past 8 or 9 years has been really good. I used to hate the pickups especially. The current production of MIM Fender instruments is top banana, for Fender
  21. I'd be concerned about any bass that has a neck that moves without changing gauge of strings or subjecting it to extreme temperatures or humidity. I've never had a bass where the neck has moved without something obvious causing it like the above.
  22. The Musicman Sterling I used to own had been used in a demo video for GAK before I got it, I used it to recorded a demo at Graeme Duffin's studio. Graeme is the guitarist with Wet Wet Wet, such a nice guy and an incredible ear. It was amazing watching him work. He put us so much at ease that the guide track we recorded ended up being the one we used for the demo. I then sold it on to James Glennie who is the founding member of the band James
  23. I once had a Hartke HA5500 that I wanted to rack mount but I couldn't find rack ears to attach to the amp. I emailed the UK distributor at the time and they sent me a pair of rack ears that had been attached to one of the amps that Jack Bruce used for the Cream reunion concert. I know it's not in the same league as paying £40k for a bass that someone famous had sweated all over but it's still good, free and not been sweated over enough to have to caulk it
