Yes I know what you mean about the sound at Stramash. The first thing I do is turn the bass on the Orange Terror all the way down. I don't know if it's an issue with the amp, or just the general boominess of the room, that's the problem? I suspect it's due to the coupling effect with the stage. They need to find some beer crates to put that 4x10 on.

In about 1980 the guitarist in my teenage band bought a Japanese, Yasuki Strat, brand new. It's unique selling point was that it had a fuzz effect built into the body. It wasn't an expensive guitar but it was usable.

Your guitarist obviously believes in Karma. You'll only know if he did the right thing, if you get a whole load of gigs from this venue in the future. Time will tell.

Our trick is that we are one band with three names. The 1st band is a serious Blues band that only plays festivals and ticketed events. The 2nd band plays blues and rock 'n' roll, and the 3rd band has the guitarist as the main singer and started out playing ska and reggae stuff but has evolved into a punky kind of sound. All the bands have different names. Also, when our local main venue (which has 3/4 bands on per night) calls to say they've been let down by a band and asks if we can help at short notice, we always say yes. So now, if a band pulls out, we're the first guys they call. We get 3 or 4 cancellations per month at that venue, as well as the normal pre-booked gigs they give us.

The phrase, 'I don' t care about money', is a danger signal as far as commitment is concerned. Luckily, my main band do care about money and are very commited (we're playing 4 gigs this weekend). We're in our 50s too, so we're no spring chickens.

When you're in the gym etc, wear a weightlifting wrist brace. I wear one while I'm playing bass (on the right wrist that wasn't bad enough for surgery)and it keeps the symptoms away. Prevention is better than cure.....

I was thinking of buying a One 10. I already have the GKMB500 to go with it. At the moment I am using a BF Compact but I like the idea of being able to get on the bus with my gear. Does it produce enough volume to keep up with a drummer?

I'd say that the the covers and originals are mediocre at best. But we go down well and keep getting booked, due to the power of our onstage charisma and our guitarist's extremely tight trousers.

My band whack originals and covers in the set. We get as good response from the originals as we do the covers. I used to be precious about not doing covers, but after I learned a few challenging ones, I realised that they can stretch you and make you a better musician. Unfortunately I no longer get that warm sense of superiority, I used to have, when I could say to people ' Oh......we don't do covers'.
