  1. I bought a Fender Rumble 100 V3 recently, secondhand. It cost me £165 and it's incredibly light (you can pick it up with your pinkie). I played through it at a blues gig, in a crowded bar, 3 weeks ago and it kept up with a , reasonably, well behaved drummer, a keyboard player and a guitarist, playing through a 50 watt valve amp. I was told it put out a good bottom end out front. I usually take my GK MB500 and my Barefaced Compact to that gig. It's as small as a practice amp but it's definitely loud enough to gig with.
  2. I used to own an Ashdown EB 150 combo. It sounded great. But they do have a contour switch which removes the mids from your sound and with it all definition (it's for slapping apparently). It also has a deep switch and an octaver control which are both pretty pointless. I used to play with all of these gizmos switched off and the EQ controls at 12 o'clock and it sounded excellent.
  3. There must be something majorly wrong with it. Maybe a pre amp or neck issue?
  4. It's just general ignorance. I always reply to private messages as a matter of courtesy.
  5. A professional musician, is a musician that declares his full income, from music, to the taxman.
  6. It depends if I'm being thrown in the deep end or not. 49 gigs out of 50 I won't feel nerves because I'm in my comfort zone but occasionally, usually when I'm depping and am unsure of the songs, I'll feel a bit anxious. I like to feel a bit of nerves, because it shows you're stretching yourself.
  7. There are of course exceptions to that rule
  8. If a band is any good, they will expect to be paid. I therefore must assume that bands that never get paid are just not very good.
  9. Ha, ha....that's my kind of self build
  10. I recently put a set of Fender strings on my P bass. They are a bit clanky but I like it. You just have to be a bit more precise in your playing.
  11. Trust me, those SX basses will be history within 6 months of being a member here. Resistance to G(gear) A (acquisition) S (syndrome) is futile
  12. But you don't own any of it, you just rent it.
  13. No, Whistlebinkies. I played at Stramash last weekend and I noticed the Orange amp was set to Bass off, Mid full and treble off. Just like I'd left it the weekend before.
  14. They replaced a CS pickup which I was get a bit bored with. I like the more defined, rockier feel of these PBXNs. It's sounds like having a P/J bass, without the J. And yes they are very loud. I had to press the active button on my amp so that they didn't distort. I don't even do that with my active bass. Next gig is on Saturday. Can't wait to try them out.
  15. I used one, at a festival I played at a couple of years ago. I wasn't particularly loud onstage but the amp, through an Ampeg 8x10, sounded epic.
  16. This is why I steer clear of knocking shops like Crack Generator. I found my own, and a friend's, stolen instruments in an Edinburgh Pawnbroker. Take note of the article below. THE boss of a Cash Generator branch in Edinburgh has been jailed after selling on stolen goods worth up to £50,000. James Devlin, 53, manager of the chain's South Bridge shop, pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court but claimed he had simply turned a blind eye to the scam. The court heard a false customer account had been set up in the shop to deal with stolen or reset property. Fiscal depute James O'Reilly told the court that it had resulted in "a large number of stolen goods" being passed through the business. Devlin, of Ferniehill Avenue in the Capital, who had been in charge of the shop since 2005, admitted acting with others in the scheme between May 6, 2006, and August 24, 2010. 17. I think you may be surprised. The Mexican P bass Deluxe, I played in Guitar Guitar, was right out of the cardboard box (I was there when the assistant cut it open) and it was set up perfectly, with a really low action.
  18. Very nice indeed. I'm seriously thinking of buying the Precision Elite, as I used to have a P/J and they're very versatile. They get great reviews.
  19. It took me 2 years but I finally fitted my Entwistles in my P bass. Nice sound.
  20. The Mighty Mite necks are pretty decent. I would equate them with the neck on a Squier bass. The ones I've bought were Jazz Bass necks and were pretty slim front to back. I've also owned an Allparts Jazz Bass neck and it was substantially chunkier.
  21. I remember going to a see a musical duo at the Edinburgh Fringe, a few years ago, with a friend. We were the only two people there! My friend went to the toilet and they put the gig on pause until she got back
  22. I recently bought a used, Fender Rumble 100 V3, for £165. I've played a couple of smaller gigs with it and it sounds great. It takes up much less room, onstage, than my Barefaced Compact. Bargain!
  23. I was thinking of buying a USA elite Precision but the only P/J my local Guitar Guitar had in stock was a Mexican P bass Deluxe. I tried it and was blown away with the sound and playability. I had to ask myself why would I want to pay another £1,000, for a US version, when the MiM version is so good?
  24. I always think vintage trouble are trying just a bit too hard.
  25. My teeny, ultra lightweight, Fender rumble 100 V3, managed a loud(ish) blues gig in a crowded bar last night. I was very impressed. It was up against drums, keys and a guitarist going through a 50w Sound City head. I was told, by another bassist in the audience, that it had a nice deep low end as well (and the volume wasn't even maxed out).

    I'm very impressed.

Yes I had everything at 12 o'clock, except for the bass knob. No vintage, contour or bright switched on. I have a  500 watt amps and a barefaced compact that I usually use but I have to stand so close to my cab, at this particular bar, that I can't really hear it (it just flaps my trousers).

The fact that I had it sitting on a wooden floor probably enhanced the bass frequencies.

I was playing at the Barony bar with a guy called Sandy Tweeddale. It was not a band, as such, he'd put us together just to play the gig (I knew the set as I'd played with him many times previously).

My everyday band also plays the Barony (The Dana Dixon Band) but they play pretty loud. I may bring the Rumble along next time we play there on May 6th, to see if it can keep up. I usually bring my GK MB500 and Barefaced Compact.

The only other venues we play are Whistlebinkies and Stramash, where the backline is supplied.
