1.
Didnt realise you could fix a blown speaker! - will see if I can get a rough quote from them. Thanks EBS_freak - yes does look like one of those. I'll put a wanted ad up for one of those - look to be £120 full price everywhere...eek.
I guess it depends on what the problem is but I'm sure they can give you an idea.
2. Just send it to Wembley Loudspeakers and they will give you a quote for repairing it. That way you get the correct speaker for a lot less than a replacement. Give them a quick call, they are very helpful.
3. If they bought the bass off you, didn't like it and then traded it at Bass Direct, they could easily have made a loss on the P/Ex value and Bass Direct have priced it at what they think the market will stand.
4.
Tried one of these already. There seems to be a few of these about, but either the holes don't match up or they don't cover the actual rout in the body. I'm going to try flipping the existing Strat-style plate over. The whole reason for my search is because all my cables terminate in right angled jack plugs and it's a bit of a pig getting the plugs in and out!
Might be possoible to make a plate like that out of scratchplate material. Plastic is obviously a lot easier to work with than metal and there are a few places that do custom scratchplates so maybe they could help, or if you have a Dremmel type hobby tool, you could have a crack yourself. Would you not consider changing the jack plugs on your cables to straight ones or if the cables are right angled at one end and straight at the other, use the right angled end in the amp?
5. You mean something like this? Black or Black Nickel available. http://www.axesrus.co.uk/Jack-Holder-Suitable-for-Fender-174-Strat-p/hj001.htm
6.
Pots and caps? Well sir.....I know nothing, so I had better get studying!
Happy to help. If you are going the KI0gon route then you needn't worry about Pots/Caps/Jacks, that's all taken care of in his looms.
7. Wilkinson Vintage bridges are cracking and great value for money. Have used them on a few basses. They are very well made, substantial and the brass saddles do it for me. Wilkinson tuners are also great. There is an online site in China, www.eyguitarmusic.com, that I tend to use for hardware. Good prices, (well pre the Brexit vote they were), and quick delivery Changing the Pots/Jack to CTS/Switchcraft will make a big difference for not much money. If you aren't handy with a soldering iron, then Ki0gon is your man. Will a standard pickup fit? If not what about speaking to Aaron Armstrong. the UK arm of Kent Armstrong, who could re-build your existing pickup to sound however you want or if standard size, look at what he can do for you. Prices are more than reasonable. This guy can also make whatever you want in a pickup and is apparently the man. http://jlguitars.eu/shop/index.php
8. Have sent you a PM Steve.
9. The yellow wire is actually 2 wires Steve. The central black is the "hot" and there is a shield round it that is soldered to the body of the Vol pot. The wiring is standard P Bass Vol/Tone wiring, just done using different type of wire. Do you want to bring it round and I'll sort it for you?
10. Steve, does the existing wire to the Vol pot have a central wire and a shield round it ? I have played around with an HB and they use shielded wired for the pickups IIRC. The central wire, (usually black) is the "hot" and goes to the Vol control with the shield, (which is strands of wire ) going to earth. Could you take a pic and post up here?
11. I guess it's the "6db" setting that is puzzling as "Off" and "Full" are pretty self explanatory. If you look at a lot of cabs with a tweeter they have a rotary conrol that you can use to dial in how much tweeter you want in your sound. The control will range from Off to Full and anything in between. The switch on the Fender is similar but instead of there being an infinate amount of adjustment they have saved money by replacing the rotary control with a 3 position switch and the "6db" setting reduces the tweeter output by 6db from full on.
12.
The 32" Maruzyczk basses are pretty close to what I'm after. Isn't there anybody who offers a similar hand-built service in this country for similar prices? Can't seem to find anybody.
I doubt there is anyone in the whole of Europe who can compete with Maruzyczk on build quality and price. I certainly don't know of anyone in this country that could come anywhere near.
13. Virtually every S/S Amp I have owned has a statement either on a sticker at the rear of the amp or in the Instructions saying, " Ther are no user servicable parts in this amp". So how do you service something with no servicable parts unless it is broken. It doesn't need it and as pointed out you don't service TV's, Fridges, etc.
14. Might be worth either getting this post moved to the "Eub and Double Bass" section of Gear or post in there as well. Some upright players may only look in there. Oh Welcome.
15. if you had these on a Squire VM5 i assume they are 4 over 1 ?
16. You certainly won't lose what you have got as you point out, the J pickup can be dialed out. If it were me I'd ask Aaron Armstrong, ( of Kent Armstrong fame), to make a J pickup to your requirements. He will obviously know all about the Hot Vintage and can suggest a suitable partner or you tell him what you want and he'll make it.
17. Rothko and Frost will do any decal you want and they are excellent quality.
18. If you are not confident about doing it yourself, whereabouts do you live? A BassChatter may be able to replace everything, (as it looks like it needs it), and you can watch and learn. Or go the KiOgon route.
19. Personally I don't give a monkeys about what it cost, what it looks like or what it says on the headstock. If it feels right, plays right and sounds right - It's RIGHT.
20.
I don't think i've seen a bass collection on sale anywhere apart from years ago at the Bass Centre in London
Absolute bargain. https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=Nanyo%20
21.
I don't think i've seen a bass collection on sale anywhere apart from years ago at the Bass Centre in London
There's one F/S at this moment in the For Sale forum although it's a 5 String. They really are stupidly cheap for what you get. Fantastic build quality, Gotoh hardware and IMHO you won't get more bang for your buck than one of those. They do come up on eBay from time to time and also on Facebook selling forums. Don't confuse the Jap built SGC Nanyo's with the SX ones or the ones The Bass Centre are now selling, although these are pretty good according to The Great British Bass Lounge who also sell them. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/288203-sgc-nanyo-bass-collection-sb315-japan-1991/page__p__3094872__hl__bass%20collection__fromsearch__1#entry3094872
22. If an R-400 happens to find it's way to the North West I would be really interested in trying it. I've tried just about every Class D on the market and they are all somewhat lacking. So I have concluded that Class A/B, like my MarkBass is what I need. I did get hold of a Taurus , which is also Class A/B and made in Poland, but there are 2 very flimsy switches on it that were damaged in transit so it went back.
23.
I use http://www.karaoke-version.co.uk/ Not sure if it is exactly what you are after. They are decent covers, when you buy a track you can download it as much as you want and can keep or leave out any of the instruments each time.
Another vote for karaoke-version. Excellent quality and as pointed out you can download as many versions as you like. We used to use MiDi tracks but there is such a difference in quality of some tracks and some can be absolutely appalling.
24. It would have to be a SGC Nanyo Bass Collection for me. Outstanding value for money and should fit the budget.
25.
Get a contract sorted. We ask for 25% on booking confirmation and the rest paid in full two weeks before the big day. That way the band get paid and fuel covered
Yep, that's the way to do it. We always specify in the contract how we want the funds paying as well, i.e. bank transfer into the band bank account.
