1. Hi Jackers! As you know, I've just bought the GK 210MBE's... Hopefully that pans out for me when I try them for real over the weekend. I've heard good things about the GK 212MBE's too!... Getting the right Amp & cab configuration for your needs is VERY subjective!... One thing I've learnt over the years... It's not necessarily true that the most expensive is the best for the job in hand! What kind of sound are you after?... What kinda music do you play? & What is lacking from your present set up that makes you want to change? ...or is it just a weight issue? Bass Direct has a fair selection these days, maybe a trip there to try some stuff would be cool?..... Mark's a great bloke too!
2.
that's cool I am looking for a lightweight 212, and the gk seems very good value. At the moment my main options are the GK MBE, the GK neos, a barefaced super twelve (which is much more expensive, lol), or looking out for a secondhand ebs or bergantino neo. I will look forward to your full review.
I used to have a couple of Berg AE112's... & despite the quality build & expense!... I didn't really get on with them.. the Aggies did a better job for me, at a much cheaper cost... (it's all very subjective though!) I spent a little while going through the sound clips on Thomann... comparing sounds of cabs I had some experience with, against others I haven't.... It helped me choose the GK's over others..... although the real test will be at a gig....
3.
how light are the cabs? and what kind of sound do they have? I've been looking at the 212 version, but I can't get anywhere to try one.
The GK cabs are 30lbs... compared to those Aggies, which are 42lbs!... really light & a surprisingly fat tone for cabs that are not as deep as the Aggies.... I think I am going to like them, soundwise... Probably not as well built though... You can get some idea of the sound, comparatively by using the sound clips on the Thomann site.... http://www.thomann.d...10mbe_8_ohm.htm I really wanted to try them out .... & Manson's in Exeter had them in stock (on their website!)... in real life not... It's not easy to find places to try stuff out & compare sounds these days it seems!
4. I'd been thinking about a lightweight 10" stack for a while.. at present I use either a GK1001RB or Genz Benz neo-pak, through 2 Aguilar GS112's.. I like the sound I get from both but with a lot of the gigs I do, the most important thing to me is being able to hear what's going on in what tends to be, acoustically sh*te environments! ....After a recent gig where my rig was on the drum riser but I was on the floor, I started thinking that I wanted speakers nearer my ears!... There's the justification for blowing my NYE gig dosh on new cabs! ... They arrived today (9th), after being ordered on 4th Jan... pretty impressed so far! I don't normally like buying blind but with Thomann's 30 day policy, I thought I'd take the risk.... My point is this... They sound great but I need to gig them on the weekend to be sure.... BUT.......

One of the cabs is a little scuffed (not really a problem)
When they are stacked, they rock a little, not a tight fit ( I guess I can live with that)
One of the horns doesn't seem to turn off!! the switch seems a little dodgy.... (!?!) although after more fiddling with it, it now seems to be off.... (I don't tend to use horns at all)
Can't decide if it's all troublesome enough to bother to send back... I know they are relatively cheap cabs at about £250 each & there's no guarantee that replacements wouldn't also have little foibles, after coming through the post at me... Nothing is 'wrong' enough... but it's the principle of £500 worth of goods, not being perfect.... or am I just being finicky?

6. +1 for the EBS Octabass..... very stable, I loves it!
7.
Got a price to repair, just as cheap to buy a second hand pedal ......... so it looks like I'll be getting some practice with a soldering iron!!!!!!! Still waiting to hear from EBS. Cheers Charla
Sheesh, that's bad! Was the repair quote from an 'official' EBS Uk distributor, 'Sound Technology' tech repair place? What email address are you using?... [email protected] ? After my initial 1st quick reply from them, it took 2 other emails with no reply & a 3rd with 'Are you receiving my emails?' in the subject bar before I got another reply....
8. My update is... I'm waiting for the replacement switch... Should be able to send it by the end of this week, or early next, and then a couple days for shipping. /Ralf Meanwhile I'm halfway through my Xmas contract gigs & having to use my old Tech 21 compactor, bah!...
9. I'm surprised that this is still here!.... I'm curious..... been thinking about a lightweight vertical 10 stack for a while.. at present I use either a GK1001RB or Genz Benz neo-pak through 2 Aguilar GS112's... like the sound I get from both but I do miss 10" speakers a bit... And after a gig where my rig was on the drum riser but I was on the floor, I'm thinking that I want speakers nearer my ears! I'm in Bristol! Is there any way I could get to try before I buy?
10. Another + for Roqsolid here!.... great covers, great service....

Is the Opto Stomp the one with the -15dB pad switch on?
12. Mine's the true bypass modern one.... I like everything about it other than that side switch!... When the replacement switch turns up, I'll get some 'smart arsed solder sucker' to fit it in whichever way makes life easier... (point noted about using flying leads,ta!) .......Having to use my old Tech 21 compactor while I wait.... makes me appreciate the multicomp, though!
13. Just when my Xmas contract is about to start!.... The little active/passive switch decides to stop working!.. won't switch to active anymore... Not really a biggy but I normally play active basses, so I open the thing up to see if it's something simple that I can sort myself... In doing so, I make the whole thing worse with the switch almost pulling completely off the circuit board! What I'd read on ovnilab.com didn't fill me with confidence about the multi-comp either.... "EBS MultiComp: OK, I have been avoiding saying this for some time, but it needs to be said. EBS pedals seem to "go bad" over time, more noticeably than other pedal brands. They are great when new, and the positive comments in my review apply in that case. But over just a few years they can develop issues such as distortion, switches failing, increased noise, or erratic behavior." It's quite an unusual looking switch, doesn't look like a bog standard of the shelf jobbie to me... So I emailed EBS to ask advice & got a reply almost immediately ...Saying they would send me a replacement switch for free!... I was pretty impressed with that! That little switch seems a bit of an Achilles heal to me.... Has anyone else experienced any problems with EBS pedals?
14. Indeed! The tiny wee lil Umph looper goes around!.... top build quality, i remember it well!
15. Never quite made it over there, long way for me.. but considered it worth the journey many times... Good luck for the future.
16.
Loved this one (bass etc does'nt kick until around 2.20 if you want to skip ) ..... Fly teapot, was it Keith "missile" bass or something ? ive the album, might dig it out
Keith 'Missile' came later with the Here & Now connection.... Francis Moze was the bass man on Flying Teapot who was also on some early Magma albums.... Mike Howlett stepped in from 'Angel's egg' (the 2nd album of the Radio Gnome Trilogy ) ... I still think 'You' the 3rd album of the Trilogy has the classic Gong vibe... all together now!..... " IAO ZA-I ZA-O MA-I MA-O TA-I TA-O NOW!"
17.
...Hammill was a big influence on John Lydon and an album called 'Nadir's Big Chance' from PH in the mid 70's precluded Punk. VDGG were never targetted by the press as a 'dinosaur' prog band during the punk years as much of their music had a truly vicious streak and they had 'cred'. Their only live album 'Vital' was one of the first truly live albums - warts and all. Check out Nick Potter's colossal fuzz bass onslaught! Also have a listen to organist Hugh Banton's delicate melodic bass playing on 'House With No Door' on their earlier album 'H to He Who Am The Only One'.
Vital & Nadiir's big chance were my introduction to Mr Hammill & co... Then went back to previous albums... World Record, Still life etc... Nick Potter's dirty bass on Vital really got my attention..... Great stuff! Love the 'take no prisoners' fuzzy octaves on 'Still Life' (about 3.30 in)
18. (We will have to stop meeting like this!.... 1st Hawkwind, now Gong!) ....I was a huge Gong fan... in fact the combination of Lemmy on 'Space Ritual' & Mike Howlett on 'You', inspired & nurtured my humble beginnings with all things bass.... .Perhaps with a side order of Here & Now - 'All over the Show', Van Der Graff Generator - 'Vital', Amon Duul II - 'live in London', Henry Cow - 'Concerts' & Faust's 'The Faust Tapes'... etc etc yadda yadda yadda..... (prolly be threads on all these band too soon!) My contibution here will be 'The Isle of Everywhere' A great track.... Howlett & Moerlen make for an awesome rhythm section. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9knIlUc5Cs&feature=related
19. Gee...you guys!.... aww shucks! ....thanks! Been a pleasure doing business with you all...
20. Da Groove Meister!...I could listen to her all day... I particularly like this live version of 'Nocturnal Sunshine' from the Red Hot & Cool album...
21. Shadows & light was my introduction to Jaco..... Still think it was some of his best work.
22. Used to have a (bass-modded) original one back in the day, really regretted getting rid... Bought a new Colorsound bass fuzz a while back for £129 & it reminds me of the sound.. (my original cost me £26 back then!) Originals do seem to go for silly money these days.... £200 - £400 ish ..I wouldn't wanna pay that much, though! unless maybe it was in a smaller better made box with an LED & AC socket!... but then a boutique clone would probably be cheaper!...
23. Boil them.... with a little salt, vinegar or lemon juice.... Presto!.... like new again... for a while anyway. Amazing how much finger gunk comes out, too...
24.
Have you used him? I've had a couple of amps with him/them, and had to take them back because it took so long for nothing to happen.
.....When was that? it all went a bit wrong for a while when his brother died.... but now he's back on it... so I hear.... I have used them over the years & had a great service from them, very cheap too.... Recently, I've had stuff repaired by him but I did it through Treblerock Music, who send all their stuff to him, which means you get a bit more of a solid timescale..Still pretty cheap too...
