1.
Standard charges would be circa 20% so only about £28. However you might need a receipt to prove it's only worth that much. Without a receipt they will try to determine a retail value. Of course you could take a punt at strolling through customs and not declaring it but, if stopped, then you could get hit with a fine. I did a quick look for you and found a basic black Milestone up for sale at £119 new : http://www.petercooksguitars.co.uk/catalog...bass-p-458.html Using this as a base you might be able to claim you paid a fair bit less in Mexico
Cool... thanks Molan... I guess I paid about the same.. mines a funky red colour! The Proel case is worth the rest... I do have the receipt somewhere in my bag... so I reckon it's best to come clean, rather than risk a fine. Not a bad little bass actually, once I set it up a bit... Was hoping to be able to get an SX bass in Mex, but couldn't see one in Cancun.
2. I have had the good fortune to be able to leave my regular life behind for a couple of months & travel in Central America... Didn't want to take one of my basses with me... so I bought a cheap Peavey Milestone in Cancun & have been dragging it around Belize & Guatemala to keep my hand in... I think I could get away with binging the bass back without incurring extra baggage costs. Both American Airways & Virgin Atlantic websites seem to imply that I can take it as extra hand baggage without a problem ... My question is this... Will I be stung for customs duties on the way back? The bass only cost me £140 (including a proel case)... I have the option of selling it to a guy back in Cancun before I fly back.. But I could use it at home as a teaching bass or to give to my daughter.... Any advice?
3. lotta great stuff mentioned.... Would add Oceans 11 ......& any other Tarantino film, not previously mentioned..
4. Another + 1 I used a hipshot on a four sting for many years before moving to 5... I miss it a bit actually! ....something very satisfing about fliping the lever & pulling notes up or down, as the excellent Michael Manring video demonstrates!
5. I turned up at a festival with drummer friend in tow.... to hear our grooves being played by others, from one of the tent stages!!.. that was weird... We had done some recording for a College music dept. & they had put a band together around the stuff we'd written!
6.
Mastic as a gasket? Sounds fantastic! Not sure if it would work, but it makes great poetry ;-)
...hmmm....mastic as a gasket?..... Fantastic? Bombastic? ...nah, sounds a bit drastic....
7.
Maybe a thin line of mastic around the edge of the plate, wait for it to dry then put it back on. Would that act as a gasket? Oh I made my own see through plate with a bit of perspex and a lot of time.
That looks cool.... I strangely like being able to see the gubbins within!.... could work as a solution... but the sweat gets in through the screws too....
8. I've got a Sandberg basic 5, without a scratchplate After playing it like this for a while, I found I was making a hole in the finish with my thumb.. so I thought an acrylic scratchplate would be the best option... protection & the woodgrain still visible.... had one made by Aurora project at a very reasonable price.... Looks cool.... I sweat a lot at gigs..... & I've noticed that my sweat seeps under the scratchplate... & sits there in little squishable puddles between the wood & plate! Probably not that good for the wood... & it looks unsightly... I guess this happens with my other basses but I just don't see it with regular scratchplates... Anyone else get this? Any possible solutions?
9. Been using a 1001RB-II for quite a while now... a great work horse, really like the tone. Seems I've had a strange problem recently... 2 gigs over the last couple of months have had dodgy electricity... marquee jobs, One 13amp socket powering all including lights(!!) ...& my amp struggled... volume dropping, fading in & out... not sure what to make of it. No problem when it gets enough juice, as it does at most gigs with proper power... anyone else experienced this kind of thing? Very frustrating, it was!.... twice!
10.
Bass Ukelele? Hell no. I was in Hobgoblin Music in London earlier today, and downstairs they have a bass mandolin. It looks like this: Yes, those are real full-size guitars in the picture.
hmmm..... maybe size is important after all!
11. Hi, I teach bass at DRUM BANK MUSIC in Bristol... Drum Bank Music & here's a bit about me... Dave Savage If you're interested or want to ask any questions, please use the contact details at the above site...or message me here..
12. Very cool sounding.... My daughter bought me a spongebob squarepants flying V ukulele last Xmas! I've been having a lot of fun with it.... Now I can't stop looking at videos of the Ubass! ...I'm hooked! There's even a guy doing TeenTown on one!!... ...There must be cheaper options than the Kala?
13. Stumbled across this band..... Litmus, they've got that early Hawkwind vibe ...me likey! LITMUS myspace
14. Lemmy on Space Ritual was the main reason I took up the bass.... It was by far the best Hawkwind line up & sound, in my view. Although Hawkwind 1, Warrior on the edge, Hall of the mountain grill, Astounding sounds & Quark strangeness & charm were also albums I liked, Space ritual had the spirit & the right ingredients that captured the essence of what they were about, to me.. Unfortunately these days they seem to be more like a Hawkwind tribute band ..but hats off to the guys for doing what they do, & for managing to do it for so long!
15. It sounds fatter with distortion & a touch of octaver
16.
Sampled from the original bassline and fragmented in to 50 plus samples. I love this album. PS, Terry Jackson plays bass on this album.
Brilliant album.... So is that the Terry Jackson that played on Black & White by Michael Jackson?
17. This Percy Jones groove has always given me 'musical wood'
18.
+2 and top of the pops miming and karaoke-kroakie

i fankayooo
+ the 3!
19.
Mike Howlett - Gong
a definite +1 for Mr Howlett....
20. Early Lemmy (Hawkwind - Space Ritual) Mike Howlett (Gong) Philippe Bussonnet (Magma) Percy Jones Norman Watt Roy Pino Palladino Meshell Ndegeocello many others....but these stick out!
21.
Different forum, some very helpful members, very different atmostphere, but worth checking out. I enjoy both Finnbass and Basschat - the pace of finnbass is a lot slower though so I tend to spend more time browsing on here due to my short attention span
.... +1, me too!
22.
Hi her's my first custom bass. It has no name. I made it because I liked the shape of the Mouradian CS74 and couldn't find one to buy.
Nice Hair & Pants!.....
23. Don't think I've done an update here, since the GK & Aggies....
24. A great head.... Bought one a while ago from here...... it's such a good live work horse... Have a bump
25. Hmm .... This game of getting the right cabs is so subjective... The only way to really do it, in my opinion, is to try out as much stuff as possible... with a familiar bass & head etc.. preferably live with a band, to really get the feel of what character punches through .... although the reality is this is very difficult to do... My experience of the Berg AE112's is that the tweeters were the most 'musical' I have ever used.... crisp & bright but blending well with the speaker... the cabs made a very articulate 'hi-fi' sound .... but it lacked something for me... a little too clinical & a bit souless. The Aggie GS112's suit me better... warmer, fatter.... work well in a live situation, with a very loud drummer!.... I've stuck with them. Compared to the Bergs, I reckon I've sacrificed a little in the mid-range department.... Much prefer the overall sound though. Only once tried some Epi cabs (4x10 + 1x15) at a gig ... used my head... didn't like them.. but I can't put my finger on why... guitarist in the band said, 'you sound all weak arsed through those, I can't feel the bass properly....' make of that what you will! I reckon I will buy two 2x10's cabs at some point (maybe SWR golights?) for tonal variety....but I'm keeping the Aggies, there's something special about them. It's all just my personal opinion though!
