Awesome post, Pino IS the man! John Mayer's an awesome axemeister as well though, very Stevie Ray Vaughan. Pino also did some superb playing on Joan Armatradings "The Shouting Stage" Album. Check out the intro to "The Devil I know", could be the best Pino lick ever IMO.
Yep, very tasty lick indeed that!.... +1 to 'he's the man'..... lovely player, always seems to play just the right thing for the song.... never gets in the way (even when he's busy) & manages to stamp his unique character on everything he does...
Cool looking bass. Hows the neck feel? I was thinking of getting a MM to replace my Lakland but have also been looking at Sandbergs. I tried one (a Cali PM5) a few years ago and it was a very nice bass and i almost got it. The only thing i dont like about some of them is the lack of dots on the fretboard. Not that i need them but i do like them being there. Might have one soon. Can i ask how much you paid?
Well... I thought the lack of dots possibly might pose a problem... (it does have them down the side though...) but actually no, used it for both gigs last weekend & no problem at all!... in fact the inlays down the side are larger than on my Stingray & what with the Maple board, it was easier to see my way around.. under the flashing lights & all (...my eye's aren't as good as they used to be either!) The neck suits me fine.... a little broader as you go up it compared to the Stingray, but me likey! & the feel of it is great! I paid £1149 for it..... there are much cheaper ones out there, but I wanted the local shop after-care & that specific colour combination... (rare to get maple board & unpainted headstock on a basic)

I'd been looking for a second 5 string to compliment my Stingray 5 for a while now.. After a brief affair with a G&L L2500, which looked beautiful but just didn't really deliver what I was after (not when compared to the Ray...) ...I met a guy in a music store who was trying out a Fender Jazz... He had a Sandberg California 5 jazz, natural with a maple board with him. It looked really well made & he let me have a go.... It was a really nice instrument.... Previously, I'd read about Sandbergs a bit & liked the 'Basic' shape from pics at the Bass Merchant.... sweet! There seemed to be a flurry of Sandbergs appearing for sale here after that.... & I almost went for one... Bit skint though really, so I played the sensible adult card & avoided temptation... About this time, I found out from the local dealer (Jam Guitars) that I could order one of my choice & not be committed to buying :brow: Some how or other it's happened & I've managed to scrape the dosh together!... Sandberg Basic 5 in Greenburst with maple board not too complicated, active/passive... in the same ball park as the Stingray but sufficiently different, a softer, slightly more articulate tone (pics don't really do the finish justice....maybe I'll try & take some better ones later...)
Marvellous stuff, but for me, Tina Weymouth was the first female funk/pop bass player I knew about in the late 70s. Not many peoples Idea of true funk of course, but Talking Heads were sooooo funky, and Tina & Chris (Frantz) drove them along with some very simple but effective grooves. In fact it was listening to Tina that made me realize that simple basslines, with lots of space, can be much more powerful than a lot of twidly fiddly stuff.
yeah, Tina's very cool... wasn't it her who said, "why play two notes when one will do" ....less is more. must fish out 'stop making sense' vid not seen that in a while cheers for reminding me
Wow I had forgotten about that old Joan Armatrading album, I picked a copy up on CD from Amazon and it's still a great listen - Pino's sound and playing is excellent. Thanks Bottomfeed
no problemo.... glad to be of service! Love that 'devil I know' track.... great solo at the beginning... Classic Pino! In a similar way, I got hold of 'Hearts & flowers' that Joan Armatrading album with Mick Karn on it a while back..... but it didn't do it for me.... too many 80's sounds on it & I don't think the songs are so good.... can't win 'em all

Well I reckon Josh is defo the winner!.... every time I see that pic, I LOL But here's my offerings anyway.... Mr Pouty! & the humble beginning of same band.... guitarist (one at front...not drummer posing with a guitar!) should get a prize!

Always been a fan of Mr Jones.... although I get what you mean about dated fusion!... normally I'm not a great fan of 'widdly fusion w@nking' but I've always liked his 'choice of notes'... a real dark edge that appeals to me..... He has an appalling website.... but there is some good information in the interview.... Percy Jones

Check out my similar thread, you may want to go DIY....true bypass looper

Bought an MXR Blowtorch of Badgerific.... Very easy guy to deal with... Everything went as planned, cheers mate... That's a big thumbs up...

Yeah Pino's the man!.... Some great lines on that Newman album 'We take mystery to bed' is one of my favourites... What he did on Joan Armatrading's album 'the shouting stage' also pricked my ears up....
3PDT footswitches are around £4 from ebay, for all other parts there's farnell online, bobsbitbox on ebay or maplins if you're near one to save postage. If you wanted to add a blender, there was a circuit posted by Al Healey not so long ago IIRC.. Al?
Thanks for that mate..... was a bit tempted to have a go.... but I've decided to go the easy route & pay Umph to make one for me
This guy does them for about £30, but you'd have to ask if he can fit a single bypass loop in his smallest enclosure - by default he sticks them in larger ones.
Fair play.... works out about £34 with postage... maybe that is still a bit cheaper than getting one from the states... loopmaster.com does that lil' beaut in the pic for $45... (is that £29 + shipping?.... or do they round it up to £45 as stuff seems to be from the states these days) ...Just checked it out they want $35 for shipping!!!....................................................................... Fook that!
are you any good with a soldering iron? the parts would cost around £10 - £15 and there's nothing to em, as you say. With a little bit more cash (around £2), you could add a blender........
I'm about as good with a soldering iron as a monkey is with a machine gun... bit 'hit or miss!'... or is it, 'point & spray!?' nice idea though, where would I get the case from? (....& the other bits too!) Thanks for the suggestions so far......

After determining that I do in fact want something that means I can A - bypass my FX completely when I'm not using them (most of the time!) & B - Only hit one switch to bring in multiple FX combinations... Some investigation on BC & just missing a 2nd hand one for £17 later... I seem to have wasted a chunk of my life googling for these devices & coming up with what appears to be over priced little boxes that predominantly are made in the U S of A.... Please could someone tell me if I could purchase something like this: nice & small & neat preferably ...with a pretty blue light ....mmmm cute! in the UK for around £20? ...or am I being a bit nieve here? .....after all, there's not much to 'em....is there?

I can understand why people would consider Wooten the better 'technician'.... & that youtube vid shows Flea to be a bit of a 'one trick pony' ....but pretty much all the basslines on 'Blood, sugar, sex, magic' are right up there, in my humble opinion.. Personally (& lets face it, this kinda stuff is always very subjective) I like aspects of both of their playing & I also think both are capable of boring w@nk that leaves me cold.... They've both contributed greatly to the bass playing world... I guess if it were a competition (which of cause it isn't!) the scales would tip a little in the favour of Flea for me, for his energy & soul... (but not for his endless machine gun slap.... ) Claypool is a great 'character' player too.... unique Meshell Ndegeocello & Pino Palladino are definitely two of my favourite bass players of all time! .....

Just sold a G&L L2500 tribute to TheDaivisch.... Thoroughly decent chap to deal with... lots of PM's & a few phone calls later, he sends me a case to send the bass back to him in, via DHL.... which he set up & paid for... To avoid the rediculous PayPal charges, he arranged a bank transfer & was thoughtful enough to send me a screen cap of the transaction, as he would recieve the bass before the money would clear in my account..... It all went well. Eveybody happy!
