1.
...Hammill was a big influence on John Lydon and an album called 'Nadir's Big Chance' from PH in the mid 70's precluded Punk. VDGG were never targetted by the press as a 'dinosaur' prog band during the punk years as much of their music had a truly vicious streak and they had 'cred'. Their only live album 'Vital' was one of the first truly live albums - warts and all. Check out Nick Potter's colossal fuzz bass onslaught! Also have a listen to organist Hugh Banton's delicate melodic bass playing on 'House With No Door' on their earlier album 'H to He Who Am The Only One'.
Vital & Nadiir's big chance were my introduction to Mr Hammill & co... Then went back to previous albums... World Record, Still life etc... Nick Potter's dirty bass on Vital really got my attention..... Great stuff! Love the 'take no prisoners' fuzzy octaves on 'Still Life' (about 3.30 in)
2. (We will have to stop meeting like this!.... 1st Hawkwind, now Gong!) ....I was a huge Gong fan... in fact the combination of Lemmy on 'Space Ritual' & Mike Howlett on 'You', inspired & nurtured my humble beginnings with all things bass.... .Perhaps with a side order of Here & Now - 'All over the Show', Van Der Graff Generator - 'Vital', Amon Duul II - 'live in London', Henry Cow - 'Concerts' & Faust's 'The Faust Tapes'... etc etc yadda yadda yadda..... (prolly be threads on all these band too soon!) My contibution here will be 'The Isle of Everywhere' A great track.... Howlett & Moerlen make for an awesome rhythm section. 3. Gee...you guys!.... aww shucks! ....thanks! Been a pleasure doing business with you all...
4. Da Groove Meister!...I could listen to her all day... I particularly like this live version of 'Nocturnal Sunshine' from the Red Hot & Cool album...
5. Shadows & light was my introduction to Jaco..... Still think it was some of his best work.
6. Used to have a (bass-modded) original one back in the day, really regretted getting rid... Bought a new Colorsound bass fuzz a while back for £129 & it reminds me of the sound.. (my original cost me £26 back then!) Originals do seem to go for silly money these days.... £200 - £400 ish ..I wouldn't wanna pay that much, though! unless maybe it was in a smaller better made box with an LED & AC socket!... but then a boutique clone would probably be cheaper!...
7. Boil them.... with a little salt, vinegar or lemon juice.... Presto!.... like new again... for a while anyway. Amazing how much finger gunk comes out, too...
8.
Have you used him? I've had a couple of amps with him/them, and had to take them back because it took so long for nothing to happen.
.....When was that? it all went a bit wrong for a while when his brother died.... but now he's back on it... so I hear.... I have used them over the years & had a great service from them, very cheap too.... Recently, I've had stuff repaired by him but I did it through Treblerock Music, who send all their stuff to him, which means you get a bit more of a solid timescale..Still pretty cheap too...
9. Ah yeah, Absolute Guitars is pretty good... I live close by too! Fender, ESP, G&L, some MM & a Tokai TBird at the moment, I see! http://absolute-guitars.co.uk/ The remaining Bailey Brother in Hengrove is another great repair/tech guy....
10.
I had a bit of an eye-opener in Bristol, where I was advised in a store (due to lack of LH stock) to basically quit playing left handed and go righty. Tit.
...Was that PMT?.... lotta twats there!
11. ...Red cabbage for me!.... I think the head looks a bit like a Peavey T Max.... He seems to use various Peavey amps & a Hughes & kettner too, on other vids I've seen on YouTube .. the layout of that head looks a bit like .. ... but with some of the graphic knobs missing!...(!?) Defo looks like a jazz pup at the bridge....
12. Excellent!... thanks for posting..
13. If you venture into Clifton, there's Treblerock Music http://treblerock.com/ & Digital Village http://www.dv247.com/bristol ...as far as I know Jam guitars is online only these days, shop looked closed down last time I passed by...
14. Sold a Roland JV1010 sound module to Keith... Very easy guy to deal with & prompt payment... Thanks!
15. Well.... snapped up it is!.... SOLD pending the usual
16. Just bought a bottomfeeder EF off Nick... Top guy to deal with, everything very smooth. Thanks Nick, it sounds great!
17. Great stuff!....
18. ...Do I detect a sniff of interest?....... maybe not! ....Now £60 posted.... .......
19. My 1st 'proper' bass, an Aria P that was just built so well, lovely neck... I'd put D'Marzio pups on it & it growled in a very pleasing way... & also, an Ibanez Roadster II from about 1985.... it just felt cool... sold it complete with quality flight case for £100, to pay a lecy bill!... Both basses were pretty cheap, but they felt & sounded right at the time I had them....
20. Had mine for many years now, still going strong....not actually showing much sign of wear at all.... & I've been throwing them around continually! Very impressed
21. Etta James version of 'You can leave your hat on' for a gig with full brass section this weekend... Much groovier than the Tom Jones one!...
