SOLD. Cheapo, unusual colour. Nice project bass.
karlfer replied to karlfer's topic in Basses For Sale
The first question that came up was "is it standard Fender dimension neck?" I hadn't got that far with the project, assumed it was, and had actually decided I wasn't going to change the neck anyway. The short answer is it isn't quite standard Fender fit. The long answer is pasted below. "Bear in mind all measurements are with a 6" steel ruler and poor eyesight. Nut, 41.5mm Neckplate. Both near as dammit the same as far as my eyes can see. Distance between centre of screw holes; Length Cheapo 52mm Am Special Precision 52mm Width C 38 mm Am S 38mm Neck width at back of neck where it joins the body. Again same C 60 mm Am S 60 mm Depth of body neck well where body meets neck Again the same, although this point is a little further into the body on the Am Spec, but that makes no difference. C 16 mm Am S 16 mm. THE DIFFERENT BIT. Distance from top of fretboard, to bottom of neck well, where the body fully meets the neck (between frets 15 and 16 on both). Cheapo 25MM Am Special Precision 22 mm SO, by my reckoning, a standard Fender neck would sit 3 mm lower at this point, which may cause saddle height issues????? Length from where neck fully meets body between frets 15 and 16 C 98 mm Am S 98 mm. THE OTHER DIFFERENT BIT. Width at 20th fret C 61 mm Am S 63 mm " The conversation between myself and the most splendid questioner has not been included, to protect the innocent -
Sale due to overspending , consider this a project. Reasons to buy. Very light weight body (bass weighs 7lb 13oz). Unusual 'burst. Cheaper than getting a proper respray. Slab body style. Finally use some of thoses bits from the Man Cave Spares Drawer I bought this because I'd seen a US Precision in these colours in Howard's (Bass Doc) in the early 80's. And lusted for this 'burst ever since (hey, each to his/her own, don't judge). Plan was gold plate, tuners, bridge etc. I was happy to replace the neck as well, but it's not actually that bad. Pick up was going to be a Steve Harris. The above would have given me a very playable lightweight bass, with power and bling. Whilst it is playable, it is a "beginners bass". Tuners. Not great one of them is very stiff, but they all get there. Frets. At this standard would always benefit from levelling. Pick up. Fair but the tone rotary does bugger all. In summary, I could actually gig this bass as it stands, but the gig float is now low, due to over spending. So I'm not going to fork out £150 + on better quality hardware and pup at this moment. If it doesn't go, the project will recommence next year. Anyway, £75 collected close-ish to Wigan, £90 couriered UK. PLEASE, SOLD AS PROJECT. Don't expect Custom Shop!! Feedback below. Thanks for looking, cheers, Karl. Anybody else used these yet? Anything to report? I suddenly find myself ampless and need to sort it by Friday. These still look tempting. -

Rural or not, it would help if you gave your rough location. There are plenty of folk on Basschat who will let you visit them and try their gear. For instance, if you are within 40 or 50 miles of Wigan, you are welcome to come and try my TC E BH800 through my Schroeder 212. For a few visits to different folk, you may be able to try everything you are considering. One obvious slight word of caution that applies to most folk. My rig sounds VERY different in my tiny 3rd bedroom, to how it sounds removing plaster in the Dog and Duck Good luck and enjoy the search. It really is part of the fun.

Doh, my stupidity knows no bounds. Thanks chaps. Pass me the Tweed paint please.

Not sure if this should be in repairs and technical, but here we go. Me being never satisfied, does anybody know anybody within 100 miles of Wigan who could do an excellent job of making me the front in the second picture? Currently steel mesh front. Preferably using the current 9 screw holes? Thanks in advance, Karl. For whatever reason, there are a few on the Facebook sales pages. One particularly stunning example is a blonde thumb with a German replacement Corvette neck. It's beautiful imo, especially at £550. As we have seen before, some Warwick necks just don't live long, hence he chose his preferred neck when the original went belly up.

Stuart bought my EA iAMP 600. I was a tad reluctant to courier this head, as a courier dropping it would cause a Richter event. Anyway, it got done. Stuart is head honcho of a top productions firm who work all over the world. This fortunately means he is used to dealing with dozy sods like me . He really does have that saintly patience stuff. Enough rambling, absolutely top drawer geezer, fully recommended you can deal with Stuart with both confidence and ease. Cheers, Karl.

Finally got to meet Nick at one of Basschat's authorised venues, Corley service station . Real pro musician who also happens to be a great bloke as well. It was an honour mate. Oh, and a superbly easy deal to obtain the Schroeder of my dreams. Cheers Nick, I'm sure we'll meet again.

eci0x Delete anything you have re this bass. It's a bitsa of fairly dubious origins. At best, there's an outside chance the body is US, but I'd need all the hardware off and a good look at the neck pocket and cavities. Certainly not 2010 USA Standard.

Fender decal damage - replace of leave it alone?
karlfer replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
I scraped the old one off with a Stanley knife blade. Take it out of the holder and holding the blade almost upright and flat on the wood, scrape the blade down the grain and it'll cleanly take off the waterslide and any lacquer. I bought a decal in a set of 4 from a guy in Spain. I then scanned the image and edited it to make the serial number the correct one for my own bass. The originals were all for a bass from 2009-10. This one is from 2003-4. So I wanted to keep it true to the bass. What I have found is the original was definitely silver. The decals you buy, and my own, look silver/grey on the print. When you actually apply the decal it looks grey/gold. This is because the colour of the wood is coming through. What I'm planning to do on mine is using a silver pen to colour in the silver part and make it look more like the original. If anyone wants one like mine, PM me and I'll can make these for anyone. I also have a fair stock of watersilde paper, so I'll do them at a price to cover costs.
Many thanks for that Richard, much appreciated. A job for the weekend whilst the wife is with [s]the Coven[/s] her mother and sister. Then a little PM methinks. I won't hold you accountable for the severed fingers. Kind regards, Frank Spencer -
Fender decal damage - replace of leave it alone?
karlfer replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've got one in a similar state and I'm now inspired, thank you Grangur. How, what did you use to scrape the damaged one off with? Where did you get the replacement decal, particularly with serial number? Cheers in advance, Karl. -

Excellent job indeed. -
NOT AMERICAN STANDARD. Entry level American Precision, 2011, now discontinued as are the Standard. Differences to US STANDARD. Standard pup rather than custom shop. Standard tuners rather than the fancy lightweight ones. Standard bridge rather than high mass through body. No hard case, comes with slightly tatty but fully usable Fender Deluxe gigbag. Light at 8lb 4oz. These have the Greasebucket tone circuit which has made irregular appearances since the late 80's. Very good condition but has some buckle rash on the back, Can only see in certain light. Extra £25 UK mainland courier delivery. UK ONLY I'm afraid. Any trial in Wigan, feedback linked below. The gold mirror plate is just laid on top to give an idea. It is included as well as the black original plate. Specs courtesy of Bass Direct. http://www.bassdirec...CIAL_Black.html Apologies for photos, it's raining. Again. Many thanks for looking, cheers, Karl.
