1.
I don't mean them, the other lof kind of laid back melodious hip hop ish
Yeah, really enjoyed that one myself. Definitely one of the most consistent Laters for a while...
  2.
And that outfit with 2 drummers were great
Wasn't that the singer from Crowded House?

  6.
+1 Get Howard (Bass Doc) to make you one.
+1 here too - his plates are great! B.
  7.
Do you have a brother in Aberdeen? Because you use the same avatar...
Well spotted! We probably both nicked it from the same place
  8.
Wobble firmly cemented in me the credos that Less is indeed Best when playing bass and it`s still my mantra now.
Totally agree - seen him live a few times & he can stick on a simple riff for ages without losing your interest. His book is well worth a read too... Cheers, B.
  9. Bought some strings from Batfastard in a postal deal. Great guy to deal with - everything went smoothly & a well-wrapped package arrived right on time. Cheers! B.
  10. Went over to the Gallery on a recent trip to London. Unfortunately I had the same experience as the OP & I purposely didn't go near anything more expensive than a Squier. I nearly pulled the trigger on some mail order stuff in the past & I'm not sure I would now after my experience. If there are loads of timewasters through then it might be worth considering becoming a 100% appointment only store - it nearly is anyway with the shutters down & buzzer access... Cheers, B.

  12. Had a trip to London a few weeks ago & had a very similar experience in Denmark Street. Loads of staff looking down their noses at potential customers & vast numbers of tatty overpriced instruments. It's a real shame as it used to be a real treat to go & check out gear that you just couldn't get your hands on up North. Mind you, I also went to the Gallery - the guy in the shop was extremely frosty to say the least & I didn't ask to try anything more expensive than a Squier! Is it a London thing? The shops up in Newcastle may be small, but have friendly staff that are really helpful... Cheers, B.
  13. Thanks for the positive words. Funny the top horn gets a mention - I thought it was a bit pointy at first, but now I think it looks a lot more in proportion than a Jag, which can be a bit 'stubby'. Helps with the balance too... Cheers, B.
  14.
Cheers Ben. Good piccies. I particularly like the body shot where you appear in the reflection of all three knobs. Trust it's settling in OK and presumably you're as happy as a man with three knobs.
It's settling in just fine - think I'm as happy as a man with four! Cheers, B.
  15. Hi - thought I'd post a few pics of this beauty, which was put together by The Bass Doc over the last few months. He somehow managed to make sense of my ropey attempts at graphic design & turn them into this: - Neck - Made by the late, great Jim Cairnes years ago & is a slightly smaller 32" scale, with a really comfy fit for me. The decal was put together by Rothko & Frost, who did a great job. Over the years Jim & the Doc quietly put together some amazing custom builds up here in the North East. I wanted to acknowledge this rather than just whacking a Fender decal on, so ended up with pre-CBS Jazzmaster 'J&H' logo that sits nicely on the painted headstock. I settled on Electric IV for the name - blatantly inspired by the Fender Electric XII guitar... Body - Tulipwood. Not a wood that seems to be used a lot by luthiers, but a great sound board. The shape is a sort of Jaguar / Jazz Bass hybrid - the Doc did a great job here & kept the Jaguar look, but streched it slightly for better balance. It's finished in Dakota Red & the Doc suggested the pearloid plate, which is a classic combo. The shape is an adaption of the '70s Tele Thinline idea - like the way it fits in with the whole offset shape. Machines - Think they're Schallers. Bridge - ABM. Well-crafted piece of kit. The string spacing is a touch smaller than Fender standard, so the adjustable saddles were really useful. Electrics - Kent Armstrong vintage hot P & J (the WD ones), with passive vol/vol/tone. Had to put a neck J at the bridge for the string spacing to fit with the (hidden) pole pieces. It's currently strung with Status flats, which are pretty dead sounding - in a good way Really pleased with how it turned out - cheers Howard! B.
  16. Always had a soft spot for the Young Disciples - their 'Road To Freedom' album is a classic... B.
  17. This used to be mine (it's a Retrospect 5) & the build quality is much better than you'd expect at this price. It has one of the comfiest 5 necks I've played - I only sold it on as I didn't really need more than 4 strings & if I had more space then I'd have kept it! Cheers, B.
  18. Really surprised this hasn't been snapped up yet. I have one of these & I'd describe mine as a refined take on a Stingray. They have a really usable active EQ & one of the comfiest necks I've played. It's a bargain way to grab some UK-built Status quality - I put mine up for sale a while ago & withdrew it! Good luck with the sale & hope things work out... Cheers, B.
  19. Bought an amp from Jabba & he's a really great guy to deal with. He kept me updated through all steps of the transaction & due to his excellent packing everything arrived safely. Would definitely deal with him again - cheers! B.
  20. D'Addario customer service is great - can't recommend them highly enough. Just a shame I don't like their flats... B.
  21.
BRilliant - Wilson or Fender! Wait - what's Morrissey's bass player playing? Maple Wal? Shergold? What is it? BBC3 (or 4) just now!
Think it was a Hayman 4040 - built by the same people who did Shergold, but a few years before. There's a thread here. Cheers, B. P.S. Adam Clayton's brought out a few dodgy ones tonight - especially that Warwick
  22. Sad loss of a gifted man who worked on so many classics (didn't know he'd worked on T.Rex's Electric Warrior until today). RIP Martin... B.
  23.
saw darwin deez yesterday at middlesbroughs intro festival,
Liked the album when I first heard it, but went to see him at the Evolution Festival in Newcastle the other week & wasn't into all the choreographed stuff in between the songs. Did like the fact he played a guitar with only four strings on & his bassist's Reverend was pretty nice... Cheers, B.
  24.
I had previously listened on my studio monitors and sub, but having just listened to the extended edition on the TV's speakers, I can fully agree that the bass sounded like a frogs fart in a pond full of wild geese
Totally agree - just watching it now & after boosting my TV EQ to top bass there is still nothing resembling a bassline to be heard on the first Seasick Steve track. Made the Strokes sound great though! B.
  25.
On the subject of shorter scale has anyone ever tried a 30-32" scale 5/6 string? I'm curious coz I find 34" a bit of a stretch towards the nut (I reckon its contributed to my sprained wrist) and was thinking of having a shorter scale one built. Any advice?
Unless it is a very good luthier then the B might be a bit floppy due to the lower tension of the shorter scale. From what I understand, this can be oversome with choice of materials to a degree (e.g. harder wood on the neck), but I'm no expert. Birdsong have a patented design that wraps the low B through the body & out again under the strings to increase tension on a 31" scale & there's a demo on You Tube - looks interesting, but they're not cheap & as they're handmade in the US it's difficult to try one. I think there's someone on here with a 5 string 32" Status King Bass & they were pretty pleased with it - might be worth a search. Over on talkbass.com there's a medium scale bass club with a few discussions on 32" 5 strings that's worth a read too. Lower than 32" might be a bad idea - I remember reading about a high-end 30" build with a low B & don't think it turned out great (might have been Alembic, but not sure...). Cheers, B.
