2.
Morning all, sorry have not been well so have just got to this. I'm happy for the moderators to make a ruling here, but as jxl contacted with questions waiting to be answered, but bentdice is happy as is and posted to say so, then I'm not really sure who to sell to! Technically, jxl was first? Can anyone advise? Don't want to upset anyone! Cheers, James
Don't think anyone needs to get upset. It's a bit of a tricky one, but to keep things sweet I'm happy to stand aside & for you to sell it to jxl. If anyone knows of another one going (or for that matter a 4 string Status Groove Bass - been looking for one of those for ages!) then drop me a PM... Cheers, B.
  3. I'll take it with the case & the insured postage! Will send a PM to sort out payment details if I'm the winner... Cheers, B.
  4.
PM sent
...and replied to B.
  5. One thing I missed off my original post was that I have all the original packaging for this so will do it for £140 posted Cheers, B.
  6. Hi - bought a Danelectro 63 Long Scale bass a couple of weeks ago for a project that's not worked out & I need some space in the house, so I thought I'd move it on. Styling's definitely a love/hate thing - it's a black semi hollow ply/masonite body that has the advantage of being VERY light (great if you have a bad back) & a 24-fret neck with a very slight taper (like a Rick). It's passive, with a couple of lipstick pickups & Vol/Tone/3 way switch. I've been pretty surprised by this thing to be honest - it's basic, but with a bit of amp tweaking can go from '60s boom to Lemmy-style chordal madness. Some Dano stuff can be a bit rough straight out of the box, but I had this one set up & strung with D'Addario Chrome flats (40-100) so it's pretty comfy to play. I've only used it in the house since it arrived, so condition is pretty much as new & I'll throw in a Ritter gig bag too. The whole thing cost me just under £250 with strings/set up etc., so I was thinking somewhere around £140 would be a decent deal. Camera's out of action at the mo, so here's a stock pic: - There's also a video review at http://www.danguitars.com/BassGuitars.html (scroll down near the bottom of the page). 7. Dropped price to £175 with the case. The action's very playable as it is and it's only a couple of notes up the top end that buzz, so at this price it's a bit of a bargain if jazzers are your thing. To be honest, I'd get it set up & keep it if I still played guitar, but I'd prefer to find it a home where it'll see a bit more use than it's getting here... Cheers, B.
  8. Well, if you're talking about the Final Countdown, check this out...
  9.
Maybe they're limiting the market to keep the new prices artificially high? The thing that doesn't surprise me any more is the amount of high profile indie bands that have Rickenbacker endorsements; there's loads of the f***ers using them.

+1 I'm building up a healthy dislike of Ricks after looking for one for under a grand for over a year. There is just no way I would consider spending more than that on a bass especially when you consider what else you can get for that money. Just a pity that I'm playing Lemmy basslines though !!!

Stylish though
This is the problem with Rickenbacker - the likes of Lemmy & late '70s post punk players (where a lot of current indie styling is coming from) would have bought their Ricks when they were seen as a decent workhorse bass in competition with Fender. The Fender US standard series are now around £900 new, but a new 4003 is nearly twice that & I can't see how they can justify the price tag. They are beautiful instruments, but the company are riding the wave of trendiness while strangling supply, to the point that players are losing interest. Not a good long term strategy... The thing I don't understand is why the company haven't gone down the licenced quality copy road - they'd clean up!
  10.
So are you saying that they are underpriced rather than overrated?
I'm saying that they are overpriced and, in terms of value for money, totally overrated.
  11. I've just discovered this thread & was really surprised that Rickenbackers haven't had as much of a slagging as they have. It's not that their basses are bad (although it's definitely a Marmite love/hate thing), it's difficult to understand whether they are good enough to justify the price. A standard build 4003 currently retails for around £1,699 & there's a waiting list of up to 12 months to get one if you can't find a shop that hasn't coincidentally ordered the one you want on spec a year in advance. I just don't get it... On the other hand, if you try to sell something vaguely resembling a Rick on eBay they'll be on to you faster than a burning whippet - they need to spend less time on the internet protecting their patents & more time on the factory floor doing some graft if you ask me! B.

    Hello!
Hi Bentdice and welcome Clearly you know how to make a proper introduction. Classy yet edgy influences, charming modesty, the promise of interesting gear to shift and a shower of (entirely undeserved) compliments.
Cheers - it did take me a few months to get round to it though! B.

    Hello!

Hi - been a member of Basschat for a while, but haven't actually introduced myself yet, so figured it was about time! I'm thirtysomething & live up north in Newcastle. Been playing bass for ages, but primarily due to spare time I'm not in a band or anything at present - just do stuff in the house with the laptop at the mo. Picked up bass due to players like Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division), Mani (Stone Roses), Jah Wobble (PiL) - I've always appreciated players who aren't necessarily technically perfect (like me!), but have a strong identity. Love how a simple bassline can make a tune. Currently play a couple of Yamaha BEX-4 semi-acoustic basses. Having a bit of a clear out at the mo & might be moving an orange one of these on in a couple of weeks. Also have a Washburn jazz guitar up for sale/trade here in the market place. This site's great - a very friendly & informed bunch of people. Glad I stumbled across it... Cheers, B.
  14. This is feedback for noirpunk & his mate Bill really! Sold my Squier 51 to Bill after noirpunk found it on here. Transaction went really smoothly - noirpunk did the initial communication between me & Bill before we sorted out payment/postage directly - no problems at all at any point. Would definitely deal with him again - cheers! B.
  15.
Well, I was only posting Epiphone's claim and I don't want to be defending them but... If you read the blurb in the link it's not a piezo and the magnetic pickup is unusual too.
Wasn't having a go (apologies if it read that way), but there are obvious similarities with the (now out of production) BEX & some of Rob Allen's models. Really like the look of this - I'd love a Rob Allen Deep 4 bass, but it's way over my budget - looks like the Epiphone could be a decent substitute. If only the fretless came in black... B.
  16. There's always the Yamaha BEX-4 bass - mixes magnetic & piezo pickups with active EQ in a semi body with a flamed top. I love them & have two (in Gretsch-style orange & dark blueburst) - having a clearout at the mo so might have one of these up for grabs soon actually... B.
  17. Hi - clearing out the last of my guitars as I only ever really play basses these days. Up for grabs is a Washburn J-6 archtop jazz guitar in Tobacco Sunburst. It's a pretty well constructed Gibsonesque hollowbody with a couple of humbuckers going to a 3-way switch & volume/tone for each pickup, split-block inlays, bound set neck, gold hardware & a rosewood bridge. This is one of the older Korean ones (I think it's from the mid '90s). I'm the second owner - the guy I bought it off had it from new and it was his main guitar for a while. It sounds great & there's everything you'd expect from noodling jazz on the neck pickup to trebly bite on the bridge. Looks the business too - it's the only guitar my other half has never asked me to move when it's found it's way into the living room! Here are some pics: - There are a couple of things I should say about it: - - The gold plating on the bridge is a bit worn. Doesn't effect playability though - The strap holder on the top of the body works fine, but there's a bit of play on it. If I was going to gig with it I'd maybe put another one on behind the neck join or take it to be fixed. I usually sit down with it so it's not been a problem to me. - It needs a set up. It's buzzy at the top of the neck on a couple of frets on the lower strings (around the 17th fret on the bottom E/A). It's fine apart from that - I never really play up there so I'd never noticed until I decided to sell. I reckon it needs a bit of truss rod adjustment & possibly a minor fret stone to sort it out, but I'm no expert so didn't want to try & bodge it. It comes with a lined hard case. I reckon a fair price for it to a Basschatter would be £[s]200[/s]175. Would prefer a face-to-face deal if possible - I'm based in Newcastle. Cheers, B.
  18. Yes, these instruments are not basses at all, but I've been messing around with some D'Addario piccolo bass strings on a full scale bass recently & it's been a lot of fun to be honest! Even unplugged you can hear the difference in tone compared to a six string guitar - it's really full. The D'Addarios feels a bit strange at first as the G isn't wound & they're quite high tension, but you soon get used to it. Guitars have never really felt comfy to me once I started playing playing bass & I've been after an instrument to go over my basslines when I'm recording in the house for a while. I reckon a shorter scale bass strung with piccolo strings would hit the spot as it would make the streches easier, but as it's an octave up I'm hoping there's less of the dodgy intonation that you can find with a short scale bass when you're past the 12th fret... That Manobass looks great, but strangely the Manne guitars site is listed as harmful on Google (must be adware or something). Is it a production model or a one-off? Cheers, B.
  19. Hi - up for grabs is my Squier '51 guitar in black with a maple neck. It's one of the few Squier models that wasn't a straight Fender copy & is a hybrid of a Strat, a 51 P Bass & a Tele, with a single coil at the neck & a humbucker at the bridge. Here are some pics: - Although the '51 is a modders delight (see http://www.instituteofnoise.com/squier51/forum/default.asp for some spectacular ones!), this is all original & in very good condition. Controls are master volume/push-pull humbucker coil tap & what you'd expect to be a tone control at the back is actually a three-way switch for the pickups (neck/both/bridge). Action's pretty low & soundwise it has a pretty versatile selection of Fendery tones. I don't really play much guitar these days & I'm only selling it to fund more basses! I'm based in Newcastle & would prefer to do a face-to-face deal for £100 as there's no case, but could do a deal via post if required. Alternatively, I'm on the look out for a decent short scale bass, so would be interested in trades/part exchange too - I'd prefer a semi/hollow body shorty (e.g. Danelectro, Ibanez Artcore etc.), but will consider anything at the mo. If you're interested in a trade, give me a shout & we'll take it from there... Cheers, B.
  20.
Hi, mine is up for grabs if you want it - I just haven't got round to advertising. It's a variant of seafoam green - it's not in bad condition at all but has a few scratches and a bit of player wear (nothing nasty or down to the wood). The only other slight problem is a missing tuner ferrule - I didn't notice until I re-strung recently so it doesn't affect performance. I'll pm with further details.
PM'd back
  21.
Hi, good luck with the emo kids - Manchester is full of them on a Saturday too but they seem like a reasonably friendly bunch. If you're interested in a Dano, let me know as mine may be up for sale - I'm clearing a lot of basses and other gear at the moment (see my recent ads) and my short-scale needs are probably about satisfied. I don't tune the bass an octave above normal, but using lighter strings from a baritone (6) set would probably facilitate this. Alternatively, have you thought about a baritone guitar?
Decided to leave the emo kids to it this afternoon - will go on my Dano mission next week. Had a go on a baritone guitar a while ago & loved the sound, but it's the 4 string neck I'm after. Been tempted by a Longhorn Bass I've found online, so give me a shout if you decide to sell yours - what colour is it? Cheers - B.
