1. Interesting thread. Big fan of Hooky & after reading his book on Joy Division I reckon he'll be having a chuckle at being asked to do a bass masterclass - he openly admits he's tone deaf & is known for hitting bum notes! Cheers, B.
 2.
Several weeks ago I offered to pass on Howard's number to concerned Basschatters. In that time only two people have asked. It would seem that some people would rather diss him on here, even though he won't read it himself. Not impressed. The guy offers excellent work at mates-rates prices. He has hundreds of satisfied customers but as soon as he experiences a few logistical problems people start sticking the knife in. Unbelievable.
Totally agree Conan - only had two PMs after I posted the same. Sometimes it's best to do things the old-fashioned way & pick up the phone... B.

 4. Popped up to Howard's for a flying visit today & he's fine. Some of this has been mentioned already, but a few factors have led to delays: - - His workshop has been out of action for a while, as some unexpected remedial building work needed to be done. - His scratchplate material supplier went bust. He's sourcing alternative supplies. - He's also still having problems with his internet access so isn't able to reply to PMs. I can totally understand the frustrations of not hearing anything, but I don't think there's anything to worry about & a quick call would help move things along. PM me or one of the other members who've posted for his number. Cheers, B.
 5.
I appreciate it's a work in progress but like Mr Horse once said, "No sir.... I don't like it". The marketplace has always been the spark of life for this forum and now that the new listings have lost their linear, conversational vibe for me the forum seems slower and... duller. Rare, coveted or keenly priced items generate more replies in sale threads and stay near the top of the board, whilst less exciting overpriced items sink quickly only to return to view briefly with the echo of a "bump.... bump........ pricedrop.... anybody?". That's a dynamism that the new classifieds lack. I can't see the interaction between members that would normally take place in the old marketplace spilling out into the other forums and I can't imagine why it would. Questions asked in the new classifieds seem non existant and as the number of basses for sale grows I guess will mainly come to consist of.. "is this item still for sale?"
+1 - the site is called Basschat after all! Why not add a discussion section under each ad?
 6. Might be worth having a look on Facebook in the North East Bass Bin too... https://www.facebook.com/groups/nebassbin/

 8. Hi & welcome to the forum. I never knew there was ever a bass version of the Colt - used to go to Guitarzan in Middlesbrough as a kid & they had a Colt guitar that was a bit of a talking point at the time! Sadly Jim Cairnes passed away last year. All the instruments I've seen that he's been involved with have been great & there are quite a few others on here who think the same. I don't have a gigging band myself, but I'm sure there'll be someone on here who'd love to take the Colt out for a number or two... Jim was based in Teesside - are you based in the North East too? Cheers, B.
 9.
Pickup selector for 1 pup.
Remarkable tonal versatility comes from a single powerful Duncan Designed™ PB-102 SCPB single-coil pickup and three-way switching among special tone circuits, which feature a modern bass sound (middle switch position, volume and tone controls), softer "double bass" sound (neck switch position, volume control only) and authentic tic-tac "baritone" sound (bridge switch position, volume control only). Some sort of preset filtering by the look of it... 10.
the bridge pup destroys the aesthetic.
I agree - the single pickup version looks a lot better...
 11.
ian masters from the pale saints. not that i'd imagine anyone has heard of him, or the brilliant pale saints, which is a shame.
I do! Always thought the Pale Saints were much more interesting than most of the indie shoegazing scene they were lumped in with. He had a really subtle chordal style & left loads of space - unlike a lot of his contemporaries... B.
 12.
Not sure about that. I believe Norman Houlder from the Hayman/Shergold factory was experimenting with headless designs in the 70's as well. One of his employees, a young Rob Green.
Interesting. Don't know much about the early days of Status - would love to see some pics of any early prototypes.
 13. I quite like them - here's one in action: - I was quite surprised to find out the headless bass was another Fender first (not Leo though): - http://www.vintagegu...-headless-bass/ Understand why it never made it to production! B.
 14.
The mixing is often poor on the live show and better on the Friday.
Totally agree. Someone told me the Friday show is recorded before the Tuesday show goes out live, so I think the performances can be a bit fresher. Also sounds like there's a bit of tweaking going on in production too - I couldn't hear much of her bass on Tuesday, but Friday's performance was much clearer. B.
 15. Thanks for all the interest - now [s]on hold[/s] sold. Cheers, B.
 16.
Excuse the cack handed retouching but looks OK to me
Looks much better than anything I could do - looks OK to me too. Cheers! B.
 17. Thanks all! Had a look round & noticed that the ones with the 'Y' tuners are a bit lighter (and cheaper ) than the ones with the Fender-style clover heads. The 'Y' tuners would be half the weight of the Schallers on at the mo compared to a third less with the clovers. Just not sure if it would look a bit weird to put those tuners on a Fender-style instrument - what do you reckon? The bass I'm thinking of doing this to is here Cheers, B.
 18. Hi - thinking of swapping out some Fender-style Schaller heads for a set of Hipshot Ultralites to take a bit of weight off a bass I have. Just wondered if anyone else here had done it & what they thought - they're not cheap, so I'm wondering if it is worth the cash? Also, does anyone know the cheapest place to get them over here? Might be cheaper to have them shipped from the States looking at some of the prices I've seen... Cheers, B.
 19. Glad to hear Ishibashi provide a decent service - was quite tempted by a a medium scale Aerodyne Jazz when I was looking for a medium scale. Never understand why there's so much Fender stuff limited to Japan-only distribution... Cheers, B.
 20.
Brief update. I sat down and redid my setup (nickel roundwounds, 40-100). The fretwork from the factory has been good enough on my red CIJ to allow the neck to have relief of 0.005", a nut slot cut to allow the height at 1st fret (with capo at 3rd fret) to be 0.009", and action of 5/64" at 17th fret on E string going to 4/64" on the G string. I have a pretty light touch. No buzzes anywhere. YMMV.
Hi Funkle - where did you get your Jazzes from? They're available in Japan, but never seen one for sale over here. Cheers, B.
 21.
Heh, that was no prob. I went home a very happy bunny that day Looking at this I'm starting to wonder if another train ride might be on the cards...... Oh and if anyone else is considering buying this, I can vouch that Ben is a good guy to deal with.
Cheers G - still have that Jetstar guitar for sale, so could maybe do you a package deal...
 22.
Bloody glad I didn't see this before I met you and Conan in the Toon ! Would have been walking away with three basses
That would have been very impressive - I thought you did well managing to get the train with a couple of gig bags on your back!
 23.
PMd
...and replied.
