I was thinking about Hoffman's Iron Law and was wondering if anyone was producing a really small, very hi-fi very low efficiency cab for use at home. I'm thinking that, with the relative cheapness of power available in micro heads into a really inefficient but high quality design, something could be made that would have a micro head footprint, sound great, and not be too noisy to upset the Mrs and neighbours...
In the Dead of Night is a great track I was jamming it the other day with the drummer from my band. But how can any mortal guitar player attempt to play those Alan Holdsworth parts?
I've got Steve Vai's transcription from guitarist magazine if anyone fancies a crack at it!

Car audio amplifier for outdoor bass use?
MoonBassAlpha replied to Mottlefeeder's topic in Repairs and Technical
Are these car amps all class d these days? Only asking, as class d is going to be a lot more efficient, critical for battery operation. -
I do like the sound of the Compact, but did wish it extended a little bit higher. It responds well to the tone controls on a Shuttle except tweaking the treble is barely noticable. Oddly, the Midget, with the same frequency response on paper, does react more to the treble range, possibly as a result of the cab having a higher upper-mids emphasis. I'm using fretless exclusively at the mo and the upper mids work really well with it to the extent I believe a tweeter would be superfluous.
That does show that he played far more musically when being forced into (some) restraints.
I'd just like to say I've never knowingly heard anything by him before and that cover was truly f*cking aweful. (keep yourself alive). It was like a small kid showing off his tricks. The lack of humility or feel for the original material for an apparent musician is extraordinary.

^true, dat -
A friend had one that looks like the Behringer - may have been an earlier model - but it was really very poor, pretty much unfit for purpose imho. Judge for yourself though.
Defo use a more efficient speaker for the reasons stated above, but not a guitar speaker. Guitar speakers usually have paper edge cones (ie one-piece diaphragm plus dust cap) which are not designed to move large volumes of air. Play a bass through one at anything higher than bedroom levels and you risk ripping the edge. Fine if you want to sound like JJ Burnel but I don't suppose this will go down too well in an acoustic set. If you can find a guitar speaker with a cloth edge this might fit the bill (but note the comment in the quote about deep bass).
Don't agree with this at all. I used to use an old Cube 60 with a Sessionette 75 on top of it with my bass, did lots of gigs back in the day and the guitar speaker (Celestion G12-80) is still absolutely fine. ymmv. -

Hohner Jack knurled Tuning knobs!!
Ive a jack that i love and never seems to goes out of tune. I'm interested in what causes the slipping issue?
The threaded portion of the tuner knob is steel and the slider/string retainer is aluminium, so a lot softer. The thread in the slider can just strip, especially if you don't keep them well lubricated. I've fixed this on a couple of Jack Basses by drilling and tapping out the slider to take an M4 Helicoil, a steel threaded insert. There is just enough meat on the slider to do this, and it only takes about 5 minutes if you have the Helicoil kit. -

Don't forget, the car audio amp will expect to be fed with line level input, so you'll need a preamp to get the power out, and you don't need 300W of bass power to beat off 10 acoustic guitars, a Cube 30 or similar would be more than adequate. -

how about the E H 44 Magnum, runs off 24V 2A? 2 old Bike Batteries would do the trick, I would imagine. I always thought it would be a good idea to try a small class D amp off a couple of cordless drill battery packs -
Yes, this. I recently got a Squier Tele (Affinity, the cheapest) which turned out to have loads of lifted frets. I've tapped them down gently with a hammer and some softish wood to protect the fret (strings off) and using a hammer and acetate handled screwdriver for some spot fixes just sliding the strings aside.

Hohner Jack knurled Tuning knobs!!

What's the exact problem here? Are they missing or just slipping and not holding tune? I can help with the latter. Cheers Jules -
Bill Nelson swapped his 335 for a Woolies Audition semi to set fire to on the "sunburst finish" tour. Even the "axe" on the album cover isn't a Gibbo, but the naked girl was a good distraction tactic...
I too will never let anyone use my gear as i had the same thing as the OP when we supported Wilco Johnson at Fibbers in York a few years ago. I explained to a certain mr Norman Watt Roy that the head put out more power than the cab could take so be careful ! When we packed our gear down after the gig i noticed that both gain & master volume were both up full ! Speaker shagged i had to pay for the repair cheers Norman
Ha, that's interesting, we supported Wilko years ago in some pub in Kenton and I cheekily asked Mr Watt-Roy if I might use his big Trace Rig, and he politely said no. I didn't expect him to, but it was worth a try!

I wonder if putting a couple of small washers behind the ball on the strings to move the worn part of the string off the fret would make a difference? might be worth an experiment?

Just looked on the G-S website, prices from £1425!
Only gripe is that it seems to be wearing through where the speakon connector is - this could be down to me sliding it on its back into the car.
Yeah, that would do it with pretty much any soft cover...

Rough saddle height screws, any solutions?
MoonBassAlpha replied to neilb's topic in Repairs and Technical
I would shim the neck. I've just done this on my guitarists Telecaster when I installed GraphTech Saddles which had longer screws. A couple of thin card strips at the bridge end of the neck pocket worked an absolute treat. -
Advice on Steinberger / Hohner drop tuner bridge
MoonBassAlpha replied to lownote's topic in Repairs and Technical
Can you pop up a decent picture of the rest of the bridge, some clever bugger on here is bound to be able to work it out. I assume it worked ok before disassembly? -
NIce! Mine is serial 6812. The Purplewood fingerboard is fabulous and no longer offered. They are really well put togther basses. Still quite rare though!
They will be even more rare now US Masters has stopped building
