I did when I was a Pikey student......
Now I play on such a regular basis that i can't risk using boiled strings.... I get about three gigs out of a set (2-3 hour per gig) then a new set on.
I'm pretty sure it was Jamerson..... I believe Bob Babbitt did some work on these type of sessions but this was after the release of Standing in the Shadows of Love..... but then I could be wrong ^_^

I'm not sure you'd get Sennheisers for that sorta budget..... You might want to check out some of the Beyer Opus series.... which I tried a few weeks back... they were good for the cash....
Lot's of choice on this front but I would whole heartedly recommend Sennheiser.... the Audio and Rf stability is second to none.
Whats your budget for these.... have you thought about that yet?
Jay
I can recommend Stag Studios in Witham Essex, literally just off the A12 and 30 mins from M25 J28 - http://www.stagstudios.com/index.php
Are you using the Akai supply that came with it.... I tried to run mine from a different supply once and it caused all sorts of weird problems.... went back to the Akai one and they disappeared
