1.
It's *because* Bilbo's posts on important subjects are so reasonable and reasoned that he's allowed to strike a Grumpy Old Man pose on the subject of a silly 70s pop song. Just don't get him started on James 'Rhyming Slang' Blunt ;-)
or Mustang Sally....
  2. I'd like to try one of these.... I think the £920 price on the Bass Direct site is actually the Manufacturers RRP I'tll be interesting to see what they street at...
  3. I have post Christmas GAS..... it's from all the mince pies.... I'll get me stalking jacket.
  4. I don't believe there are any hard and fast rules on how you play.... it's good to develop your own technique... If it works for you that's good!
  5.
Could it be that Class D amps might not sound as loud as you'd expect from the ratings? I've got a Crate Powerblock rated at 150w that I use for practice and occasionally for guitar. For either use it doesn't seem that loud [and yes it is supposed to give 150w into 8ohm when bridged]. I realise 'loudness' is largely down to perception.
Well.... it's probably more to do with the efficiency of the cabinet your using..
  6. A friend of mine once had a Les Paul refinished white....... they put silver glitter (like you used to get at school) on the wet body.... let it dry, then had it lacquered several times to seal it.... looked fab afterwards

You know we have now had to remove the clause in our contract stating we will not play mustang sally..... we had to play it last year sometime and they paid extra for that particular song.... not sure how we got away with that one....
  8.
Oh yes you can... Two ways 1) Take a 5-string bass, play it, then take a string off and play it again. Compare. 2) Take a P-type 4-string (J-type would be tricky), and play it. Put a Wilkinson 4+1 bridge and top peg on and play it again. Compare. FWIW, I don't think there's any noticeable difference between 4-strings and 5-strings of otherwise equal spec. They'll sound just as good as each other (or, if they're Precisions, just as bad as each other).
That's not a true test though is it..... 1) as you have taken the B string off therefore changing the tension on the neck of the bass.... obviously will have some effect on the rest of the strings... 2) your again adding something to the bass and changing te tension properties again...
This is quite an interesting thread - I earn about 70% of my income doing this sort of gig (and I MD the band) so here's my 2p. 1. Have stacks of material (at least 60 songs), covering all bases. Then if you must plan a set, try to keep genres together rather than randomly picking songs. 2. Your competition is a DJ. They cue records up, and segue them - you need to do this live. 7 seconds delay kills a dance floor (I've timed it!) 3. Don't work off a set. Have your guy in charge 'call' the songs, and make sure he can read a dancefloor. If it's pumping out there, and your next song is Angels or somesuch, you'll kill it and have to work very hard to get them back. 4. Get your contracts etc sorted out in advance, and make sure the clients have a list of what you need that they sign. 5. Interesting what OG said about CDs for first dances. We always play them live as it tends to give the client the feeling that they've got bags of value for money. But insist on a reasonable amount of warning on what it is! 6. Make sure you've got your business cards/brochures/DVDs with you as referrals are almost always preferable to agencies. 7. Common sense really, but turn up in plenty of time so you're never rushing and getting stressed. 8. Get paid BEFORE the gig! 9. Do some shopping, and get matching outfits. It gives a much better impression. 10. Play Mustang Sally, but not in 9/8, because people fall over.
Agree whole heartedly with the above apart from points 9 & 10......

  14. Got mine too... many thanks.... quality is great!!
  15. It's all a bit irrelevant because you couldn't compare the same bass as a four or five string.... though I guess that's not the question....
