  1. I've got a Sub Ray 4 in my arsenal, and I think it is a really great bang for the buck. To get one for cheap is even better. As an inveterate fixer-upper, I am very curious to know: how deep into the neck was the truss rod? I was toying with the idea of slimming down the neck on mine, about 1.5mm, maybe you can clue us all in on the internal construction of the neck!
  2. Nice job! Always great to see rescue from disaster!
  3. Stap me through me vitals! I nearly bought one of these from a wee music shop in Torquay in about 1984. I thought it was the dog's bollocks then, and I still do.
  4. 850 watts!! And only sixty quid max from Currys. Very simple control set, no FX loop. We're all looking in the wrong place!
  5. That Bi-Phase type clone thing works awesome on guitar and piano.
  6. The truss rod would mos' def be too long.
  7. I just procured a Yamaha BBG 4A II fretless for £160. Photoflame top is nice! (I have no taste). Lovely and light, active electronics sound pretty good, plays nice.
  8. Ha! What’s the difference between an onion and a banjo? Nobody cries when you cut up a banjo.
  9. ....and in the absence of Walter, Jon Herrington cut loose a bit more, I thought. You could could feel the grief and loss coming off of DF, and I thought the band were very slightly raggedy and shaken, in a good way. To me, SD songs are about alienation and being marginal. Read Eminent Hipsters if you find this strand of thought interesting. That night at the O2, those qualities we’re back in the frame big time. It was the most affecting SD gig I’ve ever been to. Just a shame I couldn’t hear Freddie Washington. I think I’m talking myself into buying tickets!
  10. The band are, without exception, stormingly good pros, who can groove like an army of mofo’s. Just a little.. polite. But the gold standard for musicianship, to my mind.
  11. Saw them last year at O2. Last few times I’ve seen them the bass has been muddy and indistinct. Also, they lack a little fire these days. Puts me off going again.
  12. Good work. And that, folks, is why you should never screw around with a Scottish bassist.
  13. It doesn’t take long to learn it! Perseverance furthers, grasshopper.
  14. Good luck. I think it can be quite a fun job, but I know how daunting it looks!
  15. I've fixed several breaks similar to that. It can be done, and I think it would be easier with a straight headstock. Angled ones are more difficult. I had the extensive advice of two expert luthier friends of mine, and it was invaluable. Let me know if I can help. BTW, how the hell did you manage that??
  16. After struggling with envelope filters, I made a patch with two in a chain. One up one down. The trick was to lower the volume drastically. It sounds very good! Press on!
  17. Yah, and that would fit a Sub Ray 4 body, please! Ta.
  18. The Stewmac ones seem to be ground away much more at the the nose. The others look like regular cutters to me, would need to be ground much more. I think.
  19. Of course! “These tabs are iffy”.
