  1. Strike me pink! I briefly played guitar in a band with John Manby, and another guitar player called Angie Antinori. This was post Croppa. I think John played in another band called Celebrate also. he was BIG into Louis Johnson, and didn’t really play any style except slap, when I knew him. He’s from Dundee, and had a couple of pals called Peem (Peter) and Pizzo. Pizzo was a big lad, and went on to road manage many big acts. When the Dundee boys got together they were absolutely hilarious. John was into martial arts, and could be very serious. Happy days!
  2. Would the Artec SE2-A preamp work for you? 25 quid from Thomann.
  3. Blimey, I'd forgotten about Landscape. Saw them a coupla times back in the day. They were great live.
  4. But how did fleabag get away with it at the top of the thread?
  5. Not fosters!! fosters! Stupid autocorrect. Or is the basschat filter algorithm thingy at work?? Hmmm..
  6. A bulldog licking fosters off a thistle. Brilliant.
  7. Jaco live on Shadows and Light. Pino Palladino on Wherever I Lay My Hat from No Parlez still kills me.
  8. Chet Atkins said to his dad “When I grow up I want to be a musician!” And his dad replied “Sorry, son, but you can’t do both.”
  9. Yes, it is near Bampton! Lucky I didn’t get him to do more stuff. Although he did come recommended, and did play th3 guitar he had set up for a friend. It was fine. Maybe he’s gotten better over the years..
  10. There’s RP Guitars in Aston. He put a new nut on a Tele for me. I hear he does stuff for Gary Kemp, so his other work must be ok. I have his number if anybody wants. There used to be a guy in Leamington Spa, but I can’t find his contact details.
  11. Larry Carlton talked about how he makes solos from interval jumps to create melodies. This means, say over the Am chord in Kid Charlemagne, playing C on the G string then jumping to to B on the top E. Nice dissonance I think.
  12. I just remembered, there is also the Dukes of September DVD, which is the SD band backing Fagen, Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald. Great playing all round.
  13. This is a subject dear to my heart! Tom Quayle has done a Steely Dan how to DVD, which is very good if you want to learn the version of Kid Charlemagne on The Royal Scam. I’ve been trying to learn that since it came out. I think I cracked it once. He’s very good with Reelin’ In The Years, too. Jon Herrington (SD guitar honcho) doesn’t try to play any of that stuff note for note live, but more “in the style of”, which I think works very well. Even he is a bit “stiff” to my ears. I think all guitar players who attempt this stuff are really psyched out by all the talk about SD’s recording process! There is a truly great live at Sony Studios movie (prolly on YouTube now), where you can see SD live under under studio conditions. You can see what Herrington does, against the background of an awesome rhythm section. Hope this helps!
  14. Yeah, I see that? The actual lavalier mike is the same, but they’ve improved the connectivity a lot in your version. I use mine to record acoustic guitar, and I find it excellent. my mate, who runs Sound Network, has sold hundreds of these to stage shows, musicals, and Formula 1, because they are so robust.
  15. It uses a nine volt stomp type battery, in a little box which, I think , also contains the preamp. I’ve never needed to use any other power supply. mine is an earlier model, doesn’t have that thing in the pix that looks like a car charger. you could call Sound Network, they’ll tell you all you need to know.
  16. Well spank me for not being as concise as your lordship would like. What is this, the Spanish Inquisition, or a place where bassists hang out and pass opinions about stuff? Last time I looked, it was the latter.
  17. Somebody above suggested that if it was black it would look like a boring P bass copy. I was pointing out that it is NOT black, but, to my eye, a rather ugly assemblage of components from differing sources, with different engineering and aesthetics, coupled with a large and oddly ungraceful backplate. So to me it looks plain weird and badly designed. I can see from this thread that there are those to whom this instrument is the dog’s bollocks, but not to me it ain’t. Snide remarks were made about the bitsa Jazz in my sig: it’s only a humble bitsa, and it’s a common old sunburst, but to me it looks a lot better than that thing. So there.
  18. That thing is ugly. Somebody whupped that with the ugly stick. It fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.
  19. There is an absolutely riveting and hugely informative Les Paul build thread on the Telecaster Discussion Forum. the guy is called Gil Yaron (look him up) and he goes by Preeb on that forum. He is a genius, I think, and his eye for detail is incredible. He also did a fantastic Jazz Bass build, which is equally engrossing. you should find all the details you seek there.
  20. What’s happening with this? No replies to my PM.
